I hope they aren't down playing anything.

I know she is 95 but I hope she really is as ok as they are saying she is.

OP posts:
TSSDNCOP · 22/10/2021 16:07

I was very alive in 1997. No way should she should have had to capitulate to leaving Balmoral and putting on that spectacle.
@HarrisonStickle.
She's hardly at Buckingham Palace but if she's concerned someone can see into her garden there she has many other properties that are private. It's not like she's stuck there.

That's not true. It's her official residence and her office and she spends most of her time there. She can't just move the official residence of the head of state.
She's lived at Windsor Castle for some time now.

HarrisonStickle · 22/10/2021 17:38

Philip was reported as being in good spirits too towards the end, so it's a somewhat worrying euphemism for them to use.

Nicholas Witchell has begun to look like a ghoul. I'm always astounded that he's continued in his role since Charles said he couldn't stand him!

HarrisonStickle · 22/10/2021 17:44

It’ll be so strange when she does pop her clogs.

It will won't it. My mum is in her late eighties and was a teenager when the Queen became the Queen. Only people her age and above will ever have known another monarch as an adult. And only people over 70 will have experienced another in their entire lifetimes.

SunshineCake1 · 22/10/2021 17:46

@Aposterhasnoname

Actually she got it right then!

Staying at home with her bereaved family, two children. Such a shocking death is a private affair and the parading of all of them but particularly the children was abominable!!

How dare the baying press and crowds outside the palace demand to see them at such a time they ought to be ashamed of themselves whipping up that frenzy and forcing consequences that have followed those children to adulthood

So much this, I can’t believe that there are still twats out there who put virtue signalling ahead of the welfare of two kids who were rightly being shielded by their family, until the hysterical mob demanded that they come out and put on a show for them. Shame on them, and shame on anyone who still bangs on to this day that the queen should have put the “grief” of the people before that of her grandsons.

Apparently someone said to Prince Philip while they were viewing the flowers "look after the boys." He turned to her and said "that's what we have been doing!"
HoardingSamphireSaurus · 22/10/2021 17:48

@Littleheart5

I think she’s just being sensible about not attending a politically charged service in N Ireland, where the President of Ireland isn’t attending and is (understandably, we’ve all done it) saying she’s isn’t well as a polite excuse
Given that there has only been any mention of it because The Scum published some wankery I wouldn't want to guess.
RoseAndRose · 22/10/2021 17:48

It'll be really weird to sing 'God Save the King' - people will get it wrong the whole time!

Let's hope it's still a goodly time off

My in-laws are only mid seventies and they remember having King George VI.
tempchecked · 22/10/2021 17:52

The woman is still alive FGS! Anyway I firmly believe that she should back away and put her feet up, let Charles be regent or whatever they call it, and get William and Kate to stop swinging the lead by having to do some work.
@3luckystars “she always gets things right”

I’m guessing you weren’t alive in 1997 then?
I was around in 1997.

I think she was right to try and shield William and Harry at Balmoral for as long as possible. Possibly she could have communicated that more clearly in public statements, but they baying mobs outside Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace were disgraceful. Led by the media.

HarrisonStickle · 22/10/2021 18:21

As children.

Sorry, my post was unclear.

Only those who were adults prior to February 1952 will have had a different monarch, as an adult. Anyone under about 88 will only have been a child.

MissMarpleRocks · 22/10/2021 18:29

I was alive in 1997. I’d just got married.

The press imo led the where are you ma’am calls as they wanted to deflect from the role of the paparazzi in Diana’s death. The queen was right to stay in balmoral till forced otherwise. That was Blair. M

Anyone who thinks she was wrong to try to protect the boys needs their head examined.

madisonbridges · 22/10/2021 18:32

@HarrisonStickle. Aw, you know that's unfair. She's only at Windsor because of covid. Otherwise she's at BP during the working week.

BrilloPaddy · 22/10/2021 18:58

I feel really angry that they were forced into publicly sharing this. She's entitled to privacy about her health Angry

Nicholas Witchell is taking it very badly isn't he.
julieca · 22/10/2021 20:31

I think in 1997 if she had made a public statement earlier, things would not have been built up like they did. The problem is they initially stuck to strict protocol which meant Diana was a commoner and they thus had to do little.

julieca · 22/10/2021 20:33

And the decision to have the boys march at the funeral was a RF one that was condemned by a lot of the public at the time. It was widely perceived that it was done to stop anyone shouting negative things at the RF.

TSSDNCOP · 22/10/2021 21:03

DF was in ICU and in good spirits the day before he died. He was laughing and joking with DM in the afternoon, by the evening the doctors had summoned us to say no hope.

TSSDNCOP · 22/10/2021 21:05

I think Juliaca that would have been avoided had the initial Spencer plan for a private funeral gone ahead, with a memorial service at a later date. This would also have afforded William and Harry with much needed privacy.

julieca · 22/10/2021 21:18

@TSSDNCOP I remember at the time there was a public perception that the RF were glad Diana was dead. I think that perception was wrong, but it was fed by the failure of the Queen to make a public statement until forced to.
I had thought Charles Spencer was quite clear in wanting it to be a public funeral and the RF wanted it to be a private family funeral. Charles Spencer was very outspoken and criticised the RF.
I see a lot of attempts to rewrite history around this event.

Billlius · 25/10/2021 00:57

What?
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 25/10/2021 01:37

@hotmeatymilk

Bone idle, bet she’ll perk up at the weekend.
Tsk! these centennials, eh? any excuse to have a Ferris Bueller's Day off!
SmellyOldOwls · 25/10/2021 03:38

@StTherese

It’ll be so strange when she does pop her clogs. I think Charles will get by on sympathy for his loss for a while but then be quite an unpopular King. Be interesting to see whether Camilla is crowned Queen Consort. The video of the queen meeting Bill Gates etc was rather sad, she looked slightly bewildered (just my opinion!)

I don't mind Charles and Camilla really. He cares a lot about the environment and he definitely has inherited the sense of duty that his parents had. Camilla was on Gardeners World a few weeks ago and she seemed perfectly nice.
I'm also quite impressed that Charles actually stopped Harry's stipend when he buggered off to America! He's worlds apart from his brother who would happily siphon as much money as he fancied to jet around the world doing good knows what with god knows who.

Tyredofallthis1 · 25/10/2021 09:24

The Queen missed Church. I don't think that is usual. Hopefully she'll be better for a lie in.
