Handful of grated cheese, 50p

£7 ÷ 4 = £1.75 pp. There may be a portion leftover for a lunch for one of the kids....

egg fried rice so:
splash of veg oil - call it 10p
rice - probably 40p worth
peas - I guess 25p worth
bacon - 70p
mushrooms - £1.00
prawns - £2.50
eggs - 70p
spring onions - 95p as they only had organic
rivers of soy sauce - 50p
splash of sesame oil - 20p
parsley from the garden so not counting that.

£7.30 total so £1.82 per head.

All the stuff that was part-used (dozen eggs, rest of the peas, bacon etc) is stuff that keeps, and will get eaten, so I've only counted the cost of what's used, rather than the cost if purchasing everything anew.

whenever I do proper meat/fish based meals it seems to come in at at least a fiver a head, so I try to do rice/pasta/veg based at least 4 times a week.

£5.03 each at MacDonalds 😁

But I also did a full online supermarket shop this evening and I have spent £4.61 per head per day for the next 7 days - that will cover breakfast, dinner, lunch, snacks.

Hoppinggreen · 13/10/2021 20:16

westfacing yes it’s a genuine question.
I would have no idea
I get a weekly food delivery and then just cook stuff. I suppose I could get my online receipt and work it out but I wouldn’t just know

Half pack of tomatoes - 75p
1/4 pack lettuce -30p
Avocado - 75p
Fresh coriander - 30p
Greek yogurt -25p
1/2 bag Grated cheese - 75p

For 6 people

Just under £2 each.

DogBirthday · 13/10/2021 20:20

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

2x meat pies... £5 Cabbage... 50p Carrots... 25p Broccoli... 50p Gravy... 10p

£6.35/5 people... £1.27
I'm expecting left over pie.

Can I ask where you manage to find vegetables so cheap?
CelebrateAndDream · 13/10/2021 20:21

Broccoli and Stilton soup.

48p for the broccoli

£1.98 for the Stilton (but I only used half) so £1.00 worth of cheese.

80p for cream (only used a 'swirl' from the pot though so around 10p worth tonight).

Chucked in half an onion, a potato and a carrot (just because they were hanging about in the fridge 🤷‍♀️)

All went in the soup maker with a couple of veg Knorr...delicious!!

Enough for lunch tomorrow and two tubs in the freezer, so it made 4 portions for around 50p a serving I reckon.

Skinnyankles · 13/10/2021 20:22

I'm on hello fresh this week so £2.85 pp.

It seems more expensive but it stops me going to the supermarket and picking up "extras". I also think it's completely worth it so I do not have that "what to cook for dinner?" angst every. Single. Night.

DogBirthday · 13/10/2021 20:22

Does nobody eat vegetables? All these 'brocoli 25p ÷ 5' Shock That would be about a teaspoon.

Oceanrudeness · 13/10/2021 20:24

Goats Cheese and Roasted Pepper Pasta Bake:
Home-made tom and Basil sauce (2 onion, 2 garlic clove, 2 tins tomato, 1 carton pasatta, most of a supermarket Basil plant, total £2. Used half, froze half) - £1
4/5 of bag of pasta - 32p
Leftover Roasted Peppers - 20p
Bit of leftover red onion - 2p
1/2 carrot - 2p
1/2 tin Sweetcorn 15p
Goats cheese £1.59
Total £3.08

Made it Monday, and had the leftovers tonight. It did 4 adult portions, the kids (1 toddler, 1baby) have had it twice for dinner and once fur lunch, bless them.

It's probably 6 adult portions, so 50p/pp. A bargain, and it was delicious!

Imohsotired · 13/10/2021 20:25

Thanks to 24/7 pregnancy nausea (me) and some kind of upper respiratory virus (everyone else) we had 6 slices of toast and a tin of beans between four of us - I guess about 35p per person

Caspianberg · 13/10/2021 20:26

Sausages - £4
New Potatoes - £1
Green beans - £1
Carrots 60p
Butter/ herbs - small blob/ from garden

£6.60/3 - £2.20 each . Also not uk, food a lot more expensive in general

Granllanog · 13/10/2021 20:29

Tonight we had a Pasta bake made with fresh tomatoes, courgette, a few slices of bacon and grated cheese on top.

Courgette and tomatoes from MILs garden............ free
pasta 50p
bacon 50p (cooking bacon from Lidl)
cheese 1.00
seasoning / herbs aprox 40p

Total cost 2.40 ..............60p per serving.

bubbletrumps · 13/10/2021 20:33

£2.50 spicy chicken wings
£1.50 oven chips
£0.75 frozen peas and sweetcorn

Between four adults. So, not much.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 13/10/2021 20:34

Picked up an easy meal from Waitrose, a bit shocked at how much it actually cost now I've sat down and worked it out, particularly the bag of salad.
Levantine Table slow cooked Baharat chicken serves two £4
Levantine Table slow cooked Shawarma Lamb serves two £4.50
Baby leaf salad £2
Avocado 90p
2 Flat breads £1.50
Tzatziki £1.60

In theory the above should serve four but the three of us will probably polish it all off which would work out at £4.83 per portion.

LtGreggs · 13/10/2021 20:34

I wondered this, so just checked. Sainsbury's have broccoli at £1 per kg (frozen) or £1.30 fresh. So an 80g portion of frozen is 8p. Veg really is cheap.
RoseMartha · 13/10/2021 20:39

Homemade Bolognese with rice, carrots and broccoli.
About £1.50 per person

NotMyCat · 13/10/2021 20:40

I usually get the wonky veg so it's mega cheap. Think the carrots are about 30p for a kg

YeOldeTrout · 13/10/2021 20:43

Home made chicken pie, veg, scavenged potatoes, biscuits, milk , chocolate. £2.5-3 each?

JoBrodie · 13/10/2021 20:43

This is for making what I call "UCL Potato" as I used to work at University College London and they had a dedicated potato chef (well, heater of potatoes) on site who'd rustle up a baked potato and any filling you liked. I enjoy the combination of hot baked beans and cold cottage cheese with chives. The green beans on the side are an attempt to make it feel a bit healthy ;)

Cost of meal for one portion
• Baked potato - 42p
• Marg - ~5p
• Cottage cheese & chives - 70p
• Baked beans - 40p
• Green beans - £1.25
= £2.82 (plus cost of running microwave and fridge)

Overall cost
• Pack of 4 potatoes - £1.65
• Marg - £1.30
• Cottage cheese - £1.40
• Green beans - £2.50
= £6.85

I'll get another UCL Potato from this arrangement and while I'm enjoying that I can plot how else I'll use up the other two potatoes. Possibly marmite chips...

LowlandLucky · 13/10/2021 20:44

Venison casserole from the freezer) with mash, only cost was pennies for the dried herbs, stock cube, flour and a splash of red cooking wine.
Husband had baked banana with honey and ice cream for pudding, so 15p for the banana, honey was free and the ice cream maybe 20p. Total cost was maybe 80p.

Oceanrudeness · 13/10/2021 20:45

@DesdamonasHandkerchief Sounds delicious!

PieMistee · 13/10/2021 20:56

Chicken breast (was discounted to £1.33)
Asparagus/cherry Tom's/spinach/peas/ potatoes (mainly Aldis 6 discounted!)!but only half or less packets so about £3.50 in total. So £4.83 divided by 5 = 95p?

MatildaIThink · 13/10/2021 20:57

Not totally sure, fed the kids earlier but my husband and I had homemade pizza and dough balls with garlic butter
Dough - a few pence
Passata - 40p, but used less than a half of it, the rest will go in something else.
Mozzarella - 75p
Cheddar - 50p (a little more cheese never does any harm)
Pepperoni - 35p (half a 71p pack).
Chillies - nothing, off a plant that grows in the kitchen
Peppers - 42p
Onion - 20p (half an onion)
Butter - 60p
Garlic - 5p (a pack of 4 bulbs is 55p, so taking a guess at a few cloves)
Plus a few herbs, a bit of black pepper, olive oil, etc. from the cupboard, no real cost.

So £3.27 in total, £1.64 per person, both full, tonight was a cheap night. Yesterday we had sea bass with fresh veg, probably closer to £6 per person, so it can vary quite a lot.

fragglerockrocks · 13/10/2021 21:02

Homemade 'donner kebabs' here using a whack of reduced to clear bargains

Mince lamb 10p
Spices from the cupboard so maybe 20p in all?
Salad leaf bags x2 44p total
1/4 Red cabbage 20p
1/2 pepper 30p
Cucumber- 25p
Flour for naan 20p
Baking powder 2p
Yogurt for naan and sauce 45p
Mint sauce - 10ps worth
Chilli sauce - 10ps worth
So ingredients wise £2.36 total £1.18 each for the both of us.
Not included cost of gas and electric, and my sanity when I'll invariably mess up an element of making the bread and possibly burn my hands in the process Grin
