Ds has an awful sore throat. His tonsils are swallon. He has a couple of spots on his tongue and its slight swallon at the back. He had a phone call with the gp who said it sounds like strep throat. He's had 5 days of antibiotics that have not done anything. He's tried all the pain killers we can think of and they don't do anything at all . I did tell him if he calls 101 they will make him an appointment to see a gp at the hospital. But he won't call . He does have a gp call again in the morning. But the gp that's talking to him over talks him all the time. And he can't probably explain.

He cant even swallow water without pain. He's tried soft foods. Meal replacement shakes etc. But he's in to much pain. He's literally sitting there crying I feel awful for him

I don't really know why on posting. I know he's 19 and not 4 but I just feel so bad for him Sad

Has he tried Difflam spray?

VitalsStable · 30/09/2021 20:33

Get him to gargle with hydrogen peroxide solution. If it's a bacterial infection it will proxy's foamy substance which h is the bacteria being killed.

Momof2boys1girl · 30/09/2021 20:34

I was hospitalised loads when I was in my teens/20’s with tonsillitis, I had trouble swallowing, that was the reason for admission. I ended up on iv antibiotics and fluids. Felt better really quickly after that. I would definitely speak to the out of hours dr about him. Hope he feels better soon

Poor thing - another vote for hydrogen peroxide. Can get from boots not sure other pharmacies. X

likeacandleinthewind · 30/09/2021 20:36

Poor lad. What is his temperature like? He needs to be seen by the doctor not a phone call. I developed sepsis from tonsillitis.

Darkrainbow · 30/09/2021 20:36

Op, can he swallow his own saliva? If not that's a red flag he needs hospital assessment ASAP

Bagelsandbrie · 30/09/2021 20:38

This.

If it’s as bad as it sounds he needs to get to A and E.

If he can swallow small sips of water he needs to ring 111 and seek advice. He may need different antibiotics.

LlamaLasagne · 30/09/2021 20:38

Has he been checked to see if he has a quinsy?

waybill · 30/09/2021 20:38

Have you looked at the symptoms for quinsy? Maybe read those and see if that fits.

MumofSpud · 30/09/2021 20:41

I just came on to say Quinsy - I had it a couple of years ago - it is horrific - couldn't even swallow own saliva.

DappledOliveGroves · 30/09/2021 20:41

If antibiotics aren't doing anything it might be glandular fever. DS had this and ended up being hospitalised on a drip and with steroids as she couldn't swallow. Blood test confirmed glandular fever. Check the roof of his mouth - if there are small red dots on it it's a sign of glandular fever.

Sexnotgender · 30/09/2021 20:42

Bless him, try and get him seen in person by a doctor.

Glovesandscarf · 30/09/2021 20:43

Is he at home with you? Tonsillitis is miserable.
Have you got the spray? I think it’s difflam. Get it as far back in the throat as possible & give it a couple of minutes then try to drink.
I found warm drinks unexpectedly easier than cold, but even holding fluid in his mouth he will absorb a bit.
It’s worth seeing the Gp tomorrow. Maybe phone 111 over the weekend. If he’s much worse, or he can’t swallow saliva, he should definitely phone 111.

amb1979 · 30/09/2021 20:44

Definitely take to out of hours as could be quinsy.

Quartz2208 · 30/09/2021 20:46

I think you need to ring now and take him in

CoffeeRunner · 30/09/2021 20:48

I have also had a quinsy & it does sound possible. Also glandular fever.

When I had glandular fever I had to sleep sitting up as my throat was so swollen I felt like I was suffocating lying down.

NotMyCat · 30/09/2021 20:48

difflam throat spray
Regular painkillers, I mean even set an alarm in the night so you don't wake up in agony and take whatever he is able to, gargle with soluble paracetamol then swallow it
Warm drinks and nothing citrus/acid
When he can eat, it sounds wrong but salted crisps scrape the crap off your throat and the salt helps
OOH if no improvement

winnieanddaisy · 30/09/2021 20:49

Get some disolvable paracetamol and ask him to gargle each mouthful before he swallows it . My doctor told me about it years ago . It acts like a local anaesthetic and really numbs the pain .

MrsStrongman · 30/09/2021 20:49

Came to say the same thing about swallowing his own saliva & Quinsy.
DH had glandular fever years ago and he was so swollen he couldn't swallow, could barely breathe tbh, he ended up on IV steroids & antibiotics so it might be worth an a&e trip if he's not able to swallow.

Level75 · 30/09/2021 20:50

Does his voice sound normal when he speaks? A quinsy can change how you sound. When I had one standard painkillers didn't touch the edge of the pain.
It's one of the only ENT emergencys and usually takes a trip to A&E for them to lance it. It's treated as an emergency as it can burst and you can aspirate the contents which is dangerous.

PinkFootstool · 30/09/2021 20:51

Look at Quinsy - is he swallowing his own spit?

LavendarMoon · 30/09/2021 20:51

I’ve had tonsillitis like this before and have been hospitalised with it. If he has not improved with antibiotics and he hasn’t eaten in a week he needs to be taken to a hospital now.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 30/09/2021 20:52

Is he drinking at all? If he isn’t I think you need to ring 111 for him.

Level75 · 30/09/2021 20:55

www.medic8.com/healthguide/sore-throat/quinsy.html

Personally given his symptoms I'd call 111 as a minimum but most likely I'd go to A&E.

Timetoretiretospain · 30/09/2021 20:57

Phone out of hours - this could be very serious
