Ds 19 not eaten for over a week

Ds has an awful sore throat. His tonsils are swallon. He has a couple of spots on his tongue and its slight swallon at the back. He had a phone call with the gp who said it sounds like strep throat. He's had 5 days of antibiotics that have not done anything. He's tried all the pain killers we can think of and they don't do anything at all . I did tell him if he calls 101 they will make him an appointment to see a gp at the hospital. But he won't call . He does have a gp call again in the morning. But the gp that's talking to him over talks him all the time. And he can't probably explain.

He cant even swallow water without pain. He's tried soft foods. Meal replacement shakes etc. But he's in to much pain. He's literally sitting there crying I feel awful for him

I don't really know why on posting. I know he's 19 and not 4 but I just feel so bad for him Sad

Ask the GP for magic mouthwash, I once had severe strep that nearly caused my throat to close and it helped a ton. I think the ingredients are lidocaine, an antacid like pepto, codeine, and diphenhydramine. It's serious stuff but it works great

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 30/09/2021 21:44

People do know dyslexia might be an issue, it's just that they are massively rude dicks 🤷🏻‍♀️

ladyflower23 · 30/09/2021 21:47

I'm also thinking quinsy. It's incredibly painful and he should be seen to check for this. I really feel for him. I've suffered so much with tonsillitis over the years. Really hope he feels better soon.

@Joystir59 what the fuck is wrong with you? OP is clearly very concerned about her awfully poorly son and you can think of nothing else to do but attack her spelling? Take a look at yourself, seriously!! I’m quite astonished.

OP your poor boy. I’d definitely be phoning NHS 24 (or equivalent where you are) if I were you. If he was much younger I think you’d probably have already done it. That’s not a criticism it’s just easier to make those decisions with they’re younger. A sore throat is so miserable and he obviously has a serious sore throat. Hope he gets well soon! Flowers

This was my major symptom of glandular fever. 😔

Wineiscooling · 30/09/2021 21:55

Glandular fever? I couldn't swallow my saliva when I had that, steroids sorted it. I've also had a tonsillar abscess which was very painful but antibiotics sorted that. He needs a face to face.

SunshineCake1 · 30/09/2021 22:01

I couldn't swallow and I had tonsillitis and glandular fever. He needs to see someone today really. That long without food and probably enough fluids. I'm still in bed after three weeks.

Nottheduchess · 30/09/2021 22:01

My Dr did nothing for my tonsillitis , I suffered years and missed so much school. Eventually my mum took me to an Oral Health Awareness special clinic the hospital put on where the doctor there declared them the biggest tonsils he’d ever seen and admitted me for I.V antibiotics and then 2 months later I had them taken out. Best thing ever!!

Monkey2001 · 30/09/2021 22:02

If you can't get him to A&E can you take him to a pharmacist? They know a lot and will tell him to go to A&E if necessary.

Hope he recovers soon.

3luckystars · 30/09/2021 22:06

He needs to be physically examined right now. Poor lad. Hope he gets better soon. Don’t be fobbed off. Good luck.

Thatsplentyjack · 30/09/2021 22:12

@Joystir59

Swallon????
That's your input to the thread? I've seen you be a twat before so can't say I'm surprised.

I would probably take him to A&E. That's a long time to go without food and I'm guessing he's probably dehydrated.

Hugoslavia · 30/09/2021 22:13

It could be glandular fever. He needs to see a Dr in person either way to have cultures taken.

Hi we have been to the chemist. Gp is calling I'm the morning.

I said about hospital but he's really scared he started crying and then that effected his throat that made pain even worse and it got a bit worrying. I'm my own with small children. So I think I will let gp call. See what he says. And because its day time it might be easier to talk to ds about hospital.

I had a quinsy, glandular fever and tonsillitis simultaneously at 15 years old. It sounds the same, I was hospitalised for a week. He really needs to ring 111. Flowers

AuntieDolly · 30/09/2021 22:24

My grown up son has been hospitalised twice with tonsilitis via A&E. Please take him if it is this bad. IV anti biotics, steroids and fluids will help him - it is so painful.

Liverprobs · 30/09/2021 22:25

joy … f**k off

OP .. please ring for help for your ds, he really needs you to take over.

My dd had glandular fever - didn’t hit her that hard but she ended up in liver failure because of it 😔
Your ds needs help, at the moment you are the only one to get that help for him.

Sending hugs to you both 🤗🤗

PrinnyPree · 30/09/2021 22:25

The quinsy needed to be drained immediately in my case. I was given cocodamol at hospital for the pain, it was like magic. Xx

lurkingfromhome · 30/09/2021 22:26

@Joystir59

Swallon????
Feel better now that you’ve tried to make the OP feel small or stupid? 🙄 It was quite clear what she meant.
CyclingIsNotOuting · 30/09/2021 22:26

What’s his temperature like?
The fact he’s crying with the pain would make me consider a trip to the hospital too. Can you put him in a cab?

Sherrystrull · 30/09/2021 22:26

Op. Have you got anyone who would either stay with your little ones or would go with your ds to hospital? I really feel he needs to be checked properly tonight. It sounds very worrying.

Waitinginthewings · 30/09/2021 22:28

I had a quinsy. I was admitted for a week. Sounds like what you are describing.

IamJuliaJohnson · 30/09/2021 22:30

5 days of antibiotics and no improvement? Crying from pain? He needs to be seen urgently. A&E is your best option. Quinsy is nasty.

Balonziaga · 30/09/2021 22:31

I ended up in hospital on a drip for a week with Quinsy - it's awful.

Is he able to open his mouth at all? Can you shine a bright torch/iphone torch down his throat and see if there are any white lumps/patches?

Even if you can't, temp and inability to swallow own spit are indicators. Normal antibiotics won't cut it, you need intravenous ones hardlined into you. Show him this thread.

Good luck OP. It doesn't make it any easier that he is 19. He is still your DS

Allwillbefine · 30/09/2021 22:31

I would put money on glandular fever with secondary tonsillitis. I W couldn’t even swallow spit when I had glandular fever. I was eventually given some steroids which somehow made my throat open a bit (I don’t know how they worked).

Doctor tomorrow and insist on a blood test for glandular fever and an in person examination of the throat. In the meantime, give him ice to suck, possibly ice lollies or cold jelly from the fridge might work a bit too. Or boiled sweets to suck.

1happyhippie · 30/09/2021 22:36

My ds also had quinsy. He was really ill.
Like you, he had already had antibiotics off drs, which did nothing.
Ended up taking him to a&e. They had to drain them and kept him in for a couple of days.
It definitely needs looked at @21782b7
My ds couldn’t eat, drink or swallow his own spit
