Ds 19 not eaten for over a week

Ds has an awful sore throat. His tonsils are swallon. He has a couple of spots on his tongue and its slight swallon at the back. He had a phone call with the gp who said it sounds like strep throat. He's had 5 days of antibiotics that have not done anything. He's tried all the pain killers we can think of and they don't do anything at all . I did tell him if he calls 101 they will make him an appointment to see a gp at the hospital. But he won't call . He does have a gp call again in the morning. But the gp that's talking to him over talks him all the time. And he can't probably explain.

He cant even swallow water without pain. He's tried soft foods. Meal replacement shakes etc. But he's in to much pain. He's literally sitting there crying I feel awful for him

I don't really know why on posting. I know he's 19 and not 4 but I just feel so bad for him Sad

Agree he could get sepsis. He really needs to be seen ASAP. Sounds like he wasn’t given the correct antibiotics if they haven’t worked.

Take him to A & E my exh developed quinsy from tonsillitis and it can be quite a serious illness.

DidgeDoolittle · 30/09/2021 21:08

My 19 year old son was like this. He had antibiotics that did nothing. When he couldn't swallow his own saliva and started hallucinations, I took him to a & e. He was admitted with glandular fever.

Loopyloulou007 · 30/09/2021 21:10

I had this when I was 16. I had tonsillitis ( spelt wrong for all those spelling correctors out there). Then that disease got infected and it turned into quinzies ( spelt wrong, see above). I ended up loosing 2 stone in 2 weeks. Continually went to my Dr who was an ear nose and throat specialist, apparently. Who constantly dismissed it, sent me to the hospital, as if to say they will say the same. They saw me, stuck a drip in my arm, stuck in a side room as contagious and was kept in for two weeks, on intravenous antibiotics as extremely dehydrated and looked like a skeleton ( being a 5' 11" girl) scooped my tonsils out. I was so weak it was hard to walk. Missed all my exams, couldn't talk as couldn't open my mouth wider than about a cm, so eating was just too painful and tonsils so enlarged, even talked about putting a whole in my throat to breath, as it was literally nearly blocked to assist me in breathing. So my advice is, ring the Dr's and ask for referral to ears, nose and throat. No one chooses not to eat. He is ill and probably more ill than he thinks.

ShaneTheThird · 30/09/2021 21:13

Poor boy! I had my only bout of bacterial tonsillitis at 19 and ended up in hospital twice, the drs said it was the worst case they had seen. I was given dissolvable co codamol and 3 courses of penicillin and it took nearly 4 weeks to feel better. Please make sure he gets seen soon it's awful.

Houseofvelour · 30/09/2021 21:13

DH is a dentist and has said Difflam spray will help to ease the pain.
Could you call 111 on his behalf?

Houseofvelour · 30/09/2021 21:14

Swallon????
Why be so snotty? The OP could be dyslexic. Learn some manners.
MrsSkylerWhite · 30/09/2021 21:16

Sounds horrible. Can he tolerate ice lollies? The pure fruit juice and coconut milk ones from Aldi/Lidl at least contain some calories and will get liquid into him.
Have they swabbed his throat? If the GP doesn’t know which specific infection they’re treating, they may as well be prescribing smarties.

Choconuttolata · 30/09/2021 21:20

Sounds like glandular fever to me, it is nasty, I had it at the same age and only got by by gargling soluble aspirin. Difflam is good stuff and may help, but if he cannot swallow saliva or fluids he may need admitting for IV fluids as he will be dehydrated.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 30/09/2021 21:25

I was coming on to say about the swallowing on saliva

DS was about same age-home from Uni.
Furious that I made him go to A&E.
Sign said 6 hour wait.
He was triaged and in a bed and on a drip before his bum could hit the chair.
Sepsis a big fear
He was in hospital for a few days and still very ill when released-
he had glandular fever and tonsillitis
I would not leave it @21782b7

grey12 · 30/09/2021 21:26

Doctor in person, definitely. I think I would go directly to the hospital.

When I was younger (19?) I went 3 days without eating and was drinking like mad! Doctor friend of my parents told me to go to AandE. They put me on a drip (and gave me some salts for the kidneys because of the excessive drinking)

Aquamarine1029 · 30/09/2021 21:29

I would not be fooling around with gp's and 111, straight to a&e.

BurntO · 30/09/2021 21:30

I know he’s 19 and I am all for teens gaining independence but I think I’d jump in and make things happen if possible. Will you be around when he speaks to the GP? I’d be putting my mum hat on and intervene if you feel your DS isn’t getting the reality of his symptoms across. And yes, look out for quinsy.

Don't use difflam spray if he's got asthma. It's a non steroidal.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 30/09/2021 21:31

If he can't swallow his own saliva he needs to be admitted.

If he can swallow his saliva, the Difflam Spray helps me, as does soluble paracetamol that you gargle with for 30 seconds before swallowing,

You can take the maximum dosage of both paracetamol and ibuprofen together, they do not interact, so split the dosages eg gargle and swallow the paracetamol, then 3 hours later take the ibupfofen, then 3 hours after that gargle with the paracetamol again and so forth, to keep pain relief topped up as much as possible.

FInally, bashed up ice cubes or shaved ice flavoured with diluted cordial (not orange or lemon though, too acidic) or children's lollies such as rocket lollies, bashed up in a bowl, eat with a tea spoon, its getting hydration in and numbing the pain at the same time.

I used to get really bad throats until I got my tonsils taken out. I nearly died from quinsy from a really bad throat. If he can’t even swallow he needs iv antibiotics. Can he open his mouth? Is he talking like he’s got something hot in his mouth? I would take him to a&e it’s gone on long enough bless him I bet he feels rotten

likeacandleinthewind · 30/09/2021 21:35

Flabbergasted that spelling has become a topic here Grin, only on MN OP.

What are you going to do 217, doesn't matter that he is 19, I was 43 when tonsillitis led to sepsis and my H had to intervene, I was not capable.

Yes gp is calling in the morning I will get ds to list every symptom. And I will talk to the gp.

NHS website re quinsy:

Call 999 or go to A&E if you have:
a severe sore throat that quickly gets worse
swelling inside the mouth and throat
difficulty speaking
difficulty swallowing
difficulty breathing
difficulty opening your mouth
These are signs of quinsy.
