Ds has an awful sore throat. His tonsils are swallon. He has a couple of spots on his tongue and its slight swallon at the back. He had a phone call with the gp who said it sounds like strep throat. He's had 5 days of antibiotics that have not done anything. He's tried all the pain killers we can think of and they don't do anything at all . I did tell him if he calls 101 they will make him an appointment to see a gp at the hospital. But he won't call . He does have a gp call again in the morning. But the gp that's talking to him over talks him all the time. And he can't probably explain.

He cant even swallow water without pain. He's tried soft foods. Meal replacement shakes etc. But he's in to much pain. He's literally sitting there crying I feel awful for him

I don't really know why on posting. I know he's 19 and not 4 but I just feel so bad for him Sad

I'm not a medic OP. But my understanding of steroids is that they reduce inflammation, which should make him a lot more comfortable and make eating and drinking easier. They also give keep your normal appetite going when you're ill but need to eat (eg while having chemo) .

Hope he's better v soon.

My DS got bad tonsillitis for the first time in his first term of uni. 5 hours from home. He asked for a student gp appointment but would have had to wait for 3 weeks apparently so eventually he went to a walk-in clinic (somewhere else in London) where he got antibiotics and was advised to sit around watching tv and stuff for a couple of days. They didn't have a noticeable effect for a couple of days but did the trick then. So painful, even when lying down doing nothing. Your poor DS.

I had strep throat a few years back and the pain was so dreadful I couldn't swallow my own saliva, and had a raging temperature so was very emotional and out of it. I've never had a sore throat comparable since, it took 2 weeks to feel properly better.

It might be worth him coming to stay at home until he's on the mend, as he might need you to remind him to take the antibiotics and dose him up with Co codamol to keep on top of the pain, especially as he might find it hard to get the tablets down. I'd also go to the pharmacy and buy everything that numbs throat, there is a spray that might help a bit.

To the people saying he's an adult - I was 25 when I had strep throat and was too unwell to look after myself! It was comparable to a really bad case of flu in terms of needing looking after.

Ds said next time he will definitely go to the walk in. There's a couple of things I suggested. Like he was just taking paracetamol but they were not working. Then I said he can take paracetamol and ibuprofen together. But he would not for a few days because he wanted to only do what the doctor had said. He thought it was not safe to do that . Eventually he did though. Then he would not go to the hospital but I think after this morning he realised there was not a choice . Least its sorted now

That's reminded me OP. DS was also prescribed codeine by the GP. If you can still buy cocodamol from a pharmacist they might help your DS get some sleep as well as reducing the pain.

You did well. 48 hours he’ll be feeling a bit better.

MrsFlinch · 01/10/2021 15:21

Hopefully once the antibiotics and steroids kick in he'll start to feel better. I’ve suffered many time with tonsillitis and like others have stated it’s so much more than a sore throat.

My dh collapsed and ended up in hospital for 4 days with tonsillitis, 100 miles away from home, as he under estimated how serious it can get and tried to work as normal!

Glad your son realises now not to delay getting medical treatment and hope he feels better soon.

Ahhhhhbisto · 01/10/2021 15:29

Your poor DS. Hopefully he is on the mend soon.

People underestimate tonsillitis. I ended up in hospital on iv antibiotics and fluids, steroids and oramorph after being blue lighted there from the gp.
I was 27 and my DP helped me get the medical help i urgently needed.

You help the people you care about, regardless of their age.

Oh that’s great.
This happened to my ds last year when he was in Morocco on his gap year… really worrying as his throat started to close up with the inflammation. Anyway he went on strong anti boiotics and steroids but the Dr told him when he got back to the uk to get bloods checked for glandular fever. He did have glandular fever. So I would advise him to get bloods done because if he has it he will need to stay off alcohol and be v careful with paracetamol and gets lots and lots of rest otherwise it can really badly knock him for six. Good luck!

CheesyWeez · 01/10/2021 16:07

Glad he's got sorted OP, I hope this works for him. Go back to walk in if no improvement over the weekend.

I let my teen DS (16 yo) talk to our GP himself on a call in August about his very painful tonsillitis and DS made a mistake and told the GP his temperature was 37.9 and not 39.7 and the throat was "okay" when in fact he hadn't eaten for 3 days.
I was at work but his sister had heard what he had said.
So the GP said she wasn't worried about him, stay home until you feel better...
later that day he tested LFT positive for COVID, I was surprised the GP didn't suggest at least testing for COVID, knowing that it is v common now in this age group.
Teens can be very dramatic with their mums then go and tell the doctor that they are "all right really". Mine learned, I hope, to write down what he was going to say to the doctor and not minimise what's going on.

I hope your DS feels better soon.

@WiseUpJanetWeiss

It was actually called something like flaringitis

Pharyngitis. Sore throat, basically. Sounds trivial but some sore throats are anything but. Thank goodness for modern medicine eh.

Yes that's the one Grin

Enko · 01/10/2021 18:03

Pleased he is feeling better op. Mine are similar ages and no you don't stop worrying.

HaileyBailey · 01/10/2021 22:36

My son was given liquid steroids in a cup in the doctor’s office when he had glandular fever. They worked brilliantly for 24 hours. It was as though he was completely cured. He lost 8lbs in weight over the 10 days he was ill

Delphigirl · 05/10/2021 13:48

How is your ds doing @21782b7? Hope much better Flowers
