Ds 19 not eaten for over a week

Ds has an awful sore throat. His tonsils are swallon. He has a couple of spots on his tongue and its slight swallon at the back. He had a phone call with the gp who said it sounds like strep throat. He's had 5 days of antibiotics that have not done anything. He's tried all the pain killers we can think of and they don't do anything at all . I did tell him if he calls 101 they will make him an appointment to see a gp at the hospital. But he won't call . He does have a gp call again in the morning. But the gp that's talking to him over talks him all the time. And he can't probably explain.

He cant even swallow water without pain. He's tried soft foods. Meal replacement shakes etc. But he's in to much pain. He's literally sitting there crying I feel awful for him

I don't really know why on posting. I know he's 19 and not 4 but I just feel so bad for him Sad

Would they turn him away from A&E without a negative test? Surely not.

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 01/10/2021 10:24

I got prescribed antibiotics last week and wasn't seen.

TableFlowerss · 01/10/2021 10:47

@Abraxan

*So glands fever, quinsy and strep throat have all been diagnosed in here….he’s 19, he’s an adult and people move out before that age.

If you’re that concerned, tell him to ring in the morning. Honest to god, to think in 1930 there were 16 year olds killed in battle I’m the war*

If you'd read already you'd know that the ds does have a gp call tomorrow already.

And I can only assume you have been lucky enough to never feel really really poorly. Even as a much older adult I've been at a point where I've felt so unwell I haven't been able to concentrate and think properly, and absolutely could have used another adult to help advocate for me.

Fwiw an adult should have stood in for those 16y in 1930s - they should never have been there in the first place. That was adults failing children, and not a good thing to promote.

My point is, 19 is an adult. The doctor on the other end of the phone will probably think the mam is being OTT. He’s not 9.

There doctor is more likely to realise how severe it is if he hears him try to speak etc…

After speaking to gp. We called 111 who said to go to waking in at the hospital. And he will get seen by a gp there. He's getting ready now.

To add- if it’s as serious as everyone thinks on here then she should be taking him to A&E anyway….

JacquelineCarlyle · 01/10/2021 10:50

Thank goodness Op - he really needs seen some glad you're taking action!

21782b7 · 01/10/2021 11:02

For the people who are going on about he's an adult bla bla . This is why I put my last paragraph because I knew that would happen . Are you telling me as an adult you have never asked for help. He can't speak he's even had to write down what's wrong to show them when he gets to the hospital.

I do hope he will be ok.
I had strep throat once, at aged 24 and got viral arthritis after. I couldn't walk. Thankfully I recovered but the knees are a bit dodgy since - I find walking up a stairs can be very hard on them. But I'm way older than your son now.
Take care.

christinarossetti19 · 01/10/2021 11:22

Good move OP.

He need to be seen and properly examined.

If he hasn't been eating or drinking, he could be dehydrated with very low blood sugar, which need medical treatment.

Monkey2001 · 01/10/2021 12:02

Your children are always your children and of course you will want to help!

Hope they sort him out. Let us know how you get on. 🤞💐

Sherrystrull · 01/10/2021 12:03

Glad he's getting seen. It sounds very worrying and the gp sounds absolutely useless.

NancyDrawed · 01/10/2021 12:18

Sounds horrendous OP, I'm glad your ds is going to be seen by someone and I hope he gets treatment and pain relief for his throat very soon.

Tonsilitis is grim.

Ignore the idiots. I would advocate (and indeed have advocated) for my 54 year old DH so you’re obviously going to do the same for your teen DS. You’d be mad not to.

Hope they sort him out.

3luckystars · 01/10/2021 12:50

That’s great news. I’m delighted he is getting looked after. Well done

ProudAlly · 01/10/2021 13:12

I've had tonsillitis so bad I couldn't speak. Ended up in hospital but only 1 night and because I was dehydrated, it was ok. They need to try several antibiotics until they find the one that will work.

Also get them to blood test for glandular fever, that starts with tonsillitis symptoms but won't respond to antibiotics.

Good luck OP and hope DS is feeling better soon

21782b7 · 01/10/2021 13:24

They said tonsillitis. He said they are giving stronger antibiotics and steroid tablets?

OP posts:
Neonplant · 01/10/2021 13:30

Throat numbing spray, cocodamol and gargling corsadil are my trio when I've had some awful throat infections in the past.

Also apperently (my Dsis just ad a gp appointment re tonsillitis) it can be viral too so antibiotics may not work and he might just need to rest and get over it. Do keep an eye on his fluids though, he could get dehydrated.
SuperStarRose · 01/10/2021 13:34

He needs to be prescribed different antibiotics till the pain goes

I've had laryngitis 3 times and it's a very bad sore throat which is actually infected and causes a bad fever and only a few rounds of antibiotics helped each time.

It was actually called something like flaringitis

The first time I had it I was hospitalised because I was so dehydrated from not drinking or eating

The second time 10 years later I was fobbed off by the GP to try paracetamol, didn't work so got prescribed antibiotics

The third time I requested antibiotics straight away due to the fever element so I knew what it was. I had to take 3 courses of different antibiotics to get rid of it.

If in doubt and he seems really too unwell to get to GP etc call 999 and get him looked at and taken to hospital

SuperStarRose · 01/10/2021 13:35

He needs more antibiotics

Fupoffyagrasshole · 01/10/2021 13:37

Glad he went in!! Hope this works for him

Sure I’m 33 now and I had horrible pain last year in my side and first person I called was my mum and she took me to a&e and sat with me all bloody night until I was seen!

I don’t think you are ever too old to need your mum to help you when you aren’t well!

SuperStarRose · 01/10/2021 13:39

When I had this OP I was really really ill and felt like I was dying. It was excruciatingly painful and I couldn't move.

It's so much more than just a sore throat

He should get better in a few days so long as he suits the antibiotics

There are many different types of antibiotics so if one doesn't work they will try different ones

I had to have IV antibiotics the first time I had it abs I was comatose for 3 days in hospital. I was also put on a saline drip. The sore throat gets infected and infects your whole body causing fever and a throat so swollen you can not eat or drink

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 01/10/2021 13:45

Pharyngitis. Sore throat, basically. Sounds trivial but some sore throats are anything but. Thank goodness for modern medicine eh.

Tinpotspectator · 01/10/2021 13:48

He may have a quinsy? My DH had once once, and was hospitalised.

Delphigirl · 01/10/2021 13:50

Sounds like glandular fever/quinsy, both require medical attention. Take him to A&e if the gp won’t see him. I really would.
