What do the tories have to do to lose an election ?

Desmorelda · 29/09/2021 22:11

There have been suggestions in the press that within the next year Johnson will call a general election what with the infighting going on in the LP and life for many returning to normal.
At the moment the Tories are still garnering a decent percentage of prospective votes in polls. On a recent thread about Angela Rayner's choice language most posters were incensed that the PM had been subjected to such insults and felt that this genuinely made the opposition unelectable, such was
her threat to the moral fabric of the UK. However bad things are, people seem to have short memories at election time. Default vote is for the tories, however fiscally inept they are, despite multiple incidents of cronyism and corruption, dishonesty, documented lying in parliament.
I appreciate other parties are equally as incompetent but in a more bumbling, less cynical way. The Tories on the other hand are tefal plated and are not subjected to the same rigorous moral standards as the lib dems or the LP, both by the press and voters. I find it mystifying as someone not born in this country that people are so complacent and forgiving. So I just wondered how bad do the Tories have to be to lose your vote. Or maybe explain what have they done so well in the last 11 years to deserve your vote ?

Corbyn has gone now.
So corruption, lying, cronyism is tolerated because another party is worse. But that party hasn't been in power for years and a new leader has been elected who actually seems decent.
Unhinged lunatics....In what respect ? It's that kind of exaggeration I don't get.
How can an opposition be shittier ? I really don't recall labour being quite as corrupt ?

@StMarysKettle so how corrupt do the tories have to be ? I'm really curious that the brits are so forgiving.
But it's one sided because other parties are held to such high standards. It's like you've given up with your country.

If they ever lost Murdoch's etc support then I think they would lose the election. Until then they will get away with anything because "it could be so much worse under another party".......

I'd never vote tory, but I can't vote for the others either. I just spoil my ballot.

I don't know why people vote tory, they hate the general population. They despise us. They're laughing at all of the working class people who voted for them in the last election. People have no dignity left.

They could torture kittens on live TV and get away with it. Fuck Labour for screwing up so badly.

AnneLovesGilbert · 29/09/2021 23:00

Someone on the radio today said that Tories think labour voters are idiots, labour voters think tories are evil.

I’m neither but one of labour’s current problems is tte sheer unmasked contempt they display for what used to be their base. They got trounced last time and haven’t learnt a thing. Starmer is terrified of Burnham. He fawned all over Mark Drakeford today but the so called king of the north wasn’t mentioned. Neither was Khan.

I agree that it’s not for Boris Johnson to lose. He’s just sitting pretty watching the other parties tear each other apart. I loathe him but there’s no viable alternative and won’t be for years.

Less graphic than the example above but someone said he could throw a baby out of the window at number 10 and people would defend him. How many times have people seen PMQs or Starmer questioning a major fuck up and they reply “oi, as if you’d do better, poor Boris, he’s doing the best he can, leave him alone”.

The whole thing is enraging. We deserve and need decent opposition. Without it our democracy suffers and as result we all suffer.

As for cervix gate - they can just fuck off.

FlibbertyGiblets · 29/09/2021 23:01

Des the unhinged-ness around denying that there are reasons why women and girls need single sex adjustments is absolutely stunning. Ask a q about women and immediately they reply centering men. Madness.

AnneLovesGilbert · 29/09/2021 23:02

a new leader has been elected who actually seems decent

A lot of us don’t agree. He was the best of a shocking bunch but he’s turned out to be a staggering disappointment.

I think you're answering your own question 🙂 Why are people voting Tory despite everything? Because 'Fuck Labour'.
Changesorter · 29/09/2021 23:08

Voter apathy has a lot to do with it. The people who should be voting don't.

CamillaRose · 29/09/2021 23:08

Do you mean Keir Starmer, the man who denied that women have cervixes?

DoncasterHombre · 29/09/2021 23:08

The whole problem is the fact it's a political duopoly/two party system - choose one or the other, that;s your lot.

It's disgusting; pick the entitled snobs or the champagne socialists - both of whom are majority Oxbridge educated and have absolutely zero experience of "normal" life. If they are anywhere near remotely "working class" than they are in the pocket of a union and, if they're working class but now toff, they have delusions of grandeur.

Basically, if you want to be a politician . . . . you're a seriously wierd. What normal person would want that level of exposure and intrusion? A narc, that's who.

I'd rather 650 independant MP's in the house of commons given a choice . . . . . but, that said, I'd rather the whole place was torn down and chucked into the Thames, followed by the dickeads in wigs from the "Lords" and the royal family closely after in favour of anarchy over this shit show.

Applesonthelawn · 29/09/2021 23:10

@RinkyStinky1

But to answer the original question, the Tories don't have to do anything to lose - or win for that matter. Labour keep handing it to them on a silver platter.
This 100%.
CamillaRose · 29/09/2021 23:11

Someone pointed out to me that the reason we need the House of Lords is because they’re unelected and give no shits about being popular or politically correct or saying what certain voters want to hear. I have to say I didn’t appreciate the value of that until recently. Most of our electable politicians are spewing nonsense.

Shmithecat2 · 29/09/2021 23:12

Kier Starmer thinks men can have a cervix.

Rachel Reeves concurs - if you can actually understand what she's saying through all the bluster and stuttering.

David Lammy also concurs, and even suggested that those of us wanting to protect the sex based rights of women and girls were 'dinosaurs'.

Nick Thomas-Symonds has no clue what the minimum wage is - even though, as shadow Chancellor, he was calling for an increase to it Confused

And that's just a selection from the past 2 days.

OrangeJuiceAndNoodles · 29/09/2021 23:13

Rename themselves Labour?

Whstdoyouthink · 29/09/2021 23:13

If they appointment Matt Hancock as leader I would not vote Tory despite the opposition

RoseAndRose · 29/09/2021 23:14

What do the tories have to do to lose an election?

It'll be when they cease to be more popular, more in tune with what people want, than any other party.

Remember that Labour win more seats on a lower share of the vote than the Tories, because boundary reform is so very overdue. The Tories keep winning even though essentially the deck is stacked against them.

backoffice · 29/09/2021 23:15

I think the British now really just want to be bossed around and shat on by rich posh boys. We think it’s the natural order. It’s like collective Stockholm syndrome. I can’t see it changing. They are literally fucking up our economy through sheer unalloyed greed and we just smile and nod and keep voting them in. They aren’t hiding any of it.

I’ve no idea why people think labour would be worse. It’s madness.

rocklamp · 29/09/2021 23:15

They're a complete joke and they'll still just sit round scratching their bollocks wondering why they keep losing.

julieca · 29/09/2021 23:16

It is like the eighties where in spite of record unemployment, riots in the streets, schools and the NHS going to shit, and high levels of poverty, some kept electing a Tory government.
This is a repeat of Conservative governments fucking up life for ordinary people while making the rich richer.
I remember when Blair finally came to power how shabby and run down most schools and public buildings were.
It is tragic we are back to this and lots more people will suffer.

MakingM · 29/09/2021 23:21

The basic truth is that most of the population are conservative with a small c. They always have been. They won’t vote for a leftist government. So while Labour mess about arguing about different shades of socialism, conservatives know they can do literally anything and get away with it.

When Labour are clever, such as under Blair, they mess around in the centre because the conservatives have to come towards the centre to protect themselves and that improves their behaviour even if Labour still lose.

If they can’t win, Labour’s job is to drag the conservatives to a better place.

The conservatives have so many protective devices to fall back on it is literally unreal - the main one being they are ice-cold and they know Labour are not. All they have to do is make Labour angry (which isn’t hard) and they leave themselves wide open - Angela Raynor being this week’s example.

Labour won’t win until they learn how to control their tempers.

SkiingIsHeaven · 29/09/2021 23:26

It just shows you what a shit show the other parties are.

KimmyKimdoo · 29/09/2021 23:28

The Labour Party is an embarrassment right now.

julieca · 29/09/2021 23:28

@MakingM I agree that Labour only wins when they can grab the centre-ground. Starmer seems to realise it too. Those who support Corbyn are living in a fantasy of a left-wing Britain.

Desmorelda · 29/09/2021 23:32

@Shmithecat2 but what do the tories do well ? Labour may well be a poor opposition but what are the positive things that the Tories have done which make them more electable ? Cuts to UC will hurt poor w/c women, Brexit will lower the standard of living for most people, our children will have fewer opportunities, NHS on its last legs, education failing but Labour are incompetent Confused.... I agree that their stand on self ID is bonkers but the tory party has been so inept in multiple areas.....
