Are there any songs/pieces of music that give you the creeps?

The War of The Worlds soundtrack scares the hell out of me. The Red Weed from that was used during my music exam in High School and I came close to having a panic attack as it had such an effect upon me.

Likewise I had no idea that Forever Autumn was used in WOTW but the first time I heard it, it really spooked me.

Another song that makes me feel strange is Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by Crash Test Dummies. I don't know why but there's something sinister about it.

Does anyone else experience this effect with certain songs?

Ode to Billy Joe by Bobby Gentry

I love this song one of my favourite songs. But it’s a disturbing a dark story hidden behind perfect family life. I love how you hear the mother’s frustration coming out over food not been eaten than she has spent time preparing

It’s a very clever song

Poison by Alice Cooper. Just urgh!

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 25/09/2021 21:39

Twisted Nerve theme by Bernard Herrmann. (Theme of a 60s or 70s horror film, also famously used as Elle Driver’s theme in Kill Bill.) I mean, it’s meant to be creepy I suppose, and it succeeds.

Jennifer by Eurythmics

The Carol of the Bells - I like it, but there’s something sinister about it.

WeAreTheHeroes · 25/09/2021 21:41

Yes - I agree with you on Carol of the Bells.

MrsRussell · 25/09/2021 21:42

Classical - Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, they always play it at weddings and it creeps the fuck out of me. Also Carol Of The Bells - that's eerie. Ugh.

Albatross by fleetwood mac

The Carol of the Bells reminds me of the emotion behind the famous Edvard Munch painting "The Scream".

It's not festive or jolly.

It's frantic and panicky. It makes me think of people running out into the streets in mass panic, having lost their minds.

I agree with most of these. I also hate Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen and In the Living Years by Mike and the mechanics - Both such depressing songs. And I can't stand anything by the manic street preachers - I turn them off if they come on the radio. There's just something really downbeat and grim about their music.

And I love Pentatonix but this is the stuff of nightmares for me. Creepy, robotic, weird lyrics.

TourneeDuChatNoir · 25/09/2021 21:55

Runaway by Del Shannon - it's the eerie organ solo that gives me the shivers. It used to make my cry when I was little and it still has to be switched off if it's on the radio.

Wipeout - I can't remember who it's by, but it's an instrumental except for a cackling voice at the beginning saying "Ahahahaaaa, wipeout!" Again, 4 year old me couldn't handle it.

House of the Rising Sun by The Animals. I really hate it, its so creepy. Unfortunately it's one of DH's favourites so I tolerate it 50% of the time it comes on his playlist in the car. Interestingly our youngest, now 16, used to scream when he heard it, from being a baby. Even now he will shout "skip this one please" from the back seat as soon as he hears the opening bars.

Young girl get out of my mind by Gary Puckett - paedophile lyrics as far as I can see!

Totally agree on the manics, a design for life made me feel utterly despairing the first time I heard it

Hungry Eyes. What a creep!

Hungry Eyes. What a creep!
My old boss walked down the aisle to this!

It was unexpected.

MeredithGreyishblue · 25/09/2021 22:06

@ouiouibonjour "You're MINE tonight..." Sad

Persipan · 25/09/2021 22:08

Puff the Magic Dragon. I can't stand it; I have to leave the room or stick my fingers in my ears when it comes on. No idea why; I've clearly thoroughly repressed whatever the reason is!

Phoenixrising2020 · 25/09/2021 22:08

Darling Clementine. I hate it so much.

Echobelly · 25/09/2021 22:12

'The girl is mine' by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney - excuse me, I think you'll find the girl should have some say in 'whose she is'?! Grin

somewhereoverthechipshop · 25/09/2021 22:13

Alice cooper-years ago..horrifically creepy 😬

Phoenixrising2020 · 25/09/2021 22:18

Daniel O'Donnell cheerlessly sang the Veil of White Lace too. His girlfriend decides to marry someone else, but he doesn't find out that he's changed her mind until he's shot her at the altar and then seen her walking healthily across the village green. It's macabre and such situations have been used as a defence in provocation.

Bordois · 25/09/2021 22:21

Honey by Bobby Goldsboro

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 25/09/2021 22:23

Berlioz, 'Dies Irae'.

Stanley Kubrick evidently agreed with me! That creepy, synthesised version playing when the VW Beetle is gunning through the Colorado mountains amounts to about the spookiest, most suspenseful opening movie credits ever, and it's only someone driving a car. 😱 Freaky.
@NonsensicalHair I was just scrolling through the thread to see if anyone had suggested the Tales of Unexpected tune. My parents used to watch it on a Sunday night and I could always hear the scary music from my bedroom!
Also "Sweet Dreams Are Made of This" by the Eurythmics gives me the creeps.
Sweet Dreams are made of You has horrible lyrics but such a catchy good tune. If I hear the intro I have to switch it off but the lyrics swim around my head taunting me. Urgh
