Names that are never coming back

Beancounter1 · 23/09/2021 18:13

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

I think the old names are safe and will return it's the 80s names that I can't see returning. I can't imagine a baby now being called Barry, Tracy, Gemma for example.

YourWinter · 25/09/2021 23:30
@YourWinter Which names from your mother's generation are popular again out of interest?
I don't know about their use nationally but I know, or know of, girls under about seven called Ivy, Edith, Florence, Lilian, and Rose, and my mother (who lived in the same road her entire life) had friends in the village from her own school days with those names. Boys' names seem to be more enduring, lots then and now called William, Arthur, Alfred, Joseph, Thomas.

@Ticklemycarpets

Claire, Sarah, Susan, Frances, Karen, Lesley, Beverley, Nancy, Mary
I know of kids called Mary, Nancy, Frances, and Claire.

I don't think Karen will get chosen for many babies from now on! Also similar names such as Tracey, Sharon I think won't be used.

Much older names do seem to be on thr rise though. I know a couple of Violets aged 2 or under and I know a baby called Ida. Lovely old fashioned names

I love Violet though. That was my Nanna's name because her eyes were also violet. It's lovely!

StarlightLady · 26/09/2021 06:13

Fanny.

midsomermurderess · 26/09/2021 07:50

Barbara probably will make a cone back of sorts, why not? And if/when it does, so will Babs. I think very few names are extinct, certainly many mentioned here like Claire, Mary, Gavin, Sarah or Malcolm. With the obvious exception of those attached to the likes of genocidal murderers etc.

ivfbabymomma1 · 26/09/2021 09:08

Nigel?

Plumtree391 · 26/09/2021 09:55

Funny you mention Nigel. I used to know many Nigels over the years, it's an innocuous name. I wonder if it is due a comeback.

Love Barbara, it's beautiful and gentle.

Agree about Gaynor, and Gaye, can't see those names making a comeback.

As soon as I here the name I just think boobs....🤷‍♀️

Frazzledd · 26/09/2021 11:17

*hear - I'm apparently illiterate this morning...

Snoopsnoggysnog · 26/09/2021 11:33

When I hear Barbara I just think of that beach boys song Barbara Ann. Ba ba ba… it’s not a name I think of as having a gentle sound.

Dadvdtret · 26/09/2021 11:39

Names go in cycles, so it's the primary school kids of today that will be calling their babies things like Denise, Alan etc.

I can't see Horace making a comeback!

Craig, Wayne, Gary, Steven, Melvin, Barry, Norman, Dennis, Kenneth, Jeremy, Larry, Ian, Martin
I know of a toddler Martin, parents are Eastern European though so probably don't think of it as an 80s name like I do
Grandma60 · 26/09/2021 12:19

Lancelot

midsomermurderess · 26/09/2021 12:29

Martin is widely used in Central Europe, eg Czech Rep, and in Poland too, with different spelling.

Interesting @winnieanddaidy. Lots of my ancestors were Fanny's from 1700s to 1915. They were Jewish & their unpronounceable names (to Brits then) were Hebrew ie Frumat, Frumet, Fromat, meaning frum or pious/righteous and also other Hebrew names beginning with "F". I discovered on Jewish genealogy Synagogue birth records showing Hebrew name F___ then the anglicized name of Frances or Fanny recorded. Their UK birth, death, marriage certs showed Fanny or Frances.
