Names that are never coming back

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

LOL, well, here in the USA, "Donald" has taken a real nose-dive. I once had a rather wonderful rat named "Mortimer." A real little Houdini. I had to keep his cage door shut with a combination lock. I miss that rat.

Names seem to go in roughly 100 year cycles. Some of the names that my mother's generation had (born 1920) are popular again now.

I was born in the 1950s and few of my classmates' names are used for babies now. Perhaps when we are in our 90s rather than our 60s, another generation has been born, and the names from my childhood will be in vogue again.

A few from schooldays:
Julie
Barbara
Marion
Janet
Maureen
Deborah
Deirdre
Wendy
Sylvia
Ann

Raymond
Gordon
Mervyn
Brian
Eric
Gerald
Nigel
Derek
Simon
Victor

@YourWinter Which names from your mother's generation are popular again out of interest?

Bridgespot · 25/09/2021 04:03

There is not a name out there that won't come back at some point or other - I would like to think that Adolf would be an exception, but I fear that even it might crawl back in after another 50 years or so. I may think/hope that the awful/slightly made-up names of my 1960s-70s generation (I have one, so am not going to embarrass my cohorts by actually listing them) should die a deserved death, but will also bet real money that our grandchildren will - unfortunately - revive them. Would happily put a codicil in my will: "do not inflict any future grandchild or great-grandchild with 'Bridgespot'; please, for the love of all that's holy, find something more dignified" but future generations will want what they want. That said, maybe my great-grandmother had qualms about her ultra-trendy but at the time not very dignified 1880s name, and I did seriously mull it over for my daughter.

There's a Janet in my daughters class. I got a shock when I heard her being called at home time Grin

MumsMeaningfulMayhem · 25/09/2021 04:45

Barbara

Gorl · 25/09/2021 05:37

Hard to imagine a baby Tracy or Sharon now, but maybe they’ll have a revival in 20 years when people decide they’re vintage rather than dated.

COPPER3 · 25/09/2021 07:13

I think the 60'/70's names will make a come back unfortunately..
Although I think...

In the school I work in we have some small Nepalese children with names of elderly coronation street characters - I’m
Convinced the parents watch soaps to absorb some British culture and they have drawn names from CS Grin

EatAllDay · 25/09/2021 08:29

PermanentTemporary · 25/09/2021 08:30

Lots of Brian’s in my kids school. There’s a Derek too. He’s from Africa. Often foreign kids have old English names

EatAllDay · 25/09/2021 08:42

@Mariell

Nicola. Joanne. Sharon. Mark. Richard. Jeremy. Helen.

Those are some of my classmates names in the 70s that I don’t think I’ve seen being used in the last couple of decades.

You’ll see some Mark’s in the schools

When I was at uni thirty years ago there were a lot of students from far East Asia whose chosen English names were always those of an older generation than their peers.

A lot of killers seem to be called Ian. I dislike it.

Wendy, Joan, Pauline, Mavis.
Norbert, Alan, Norman, Granville, Boris and Chad.
Shame about Levi, it's a nice Jewish name (more of a shame for his victims though)
