Names that are never coming back

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

I'm in my 50s and was very surprised to find a newish friend's son (in his 20s) is called Kevin. I went to school with a few and thought it died out with my generation. Also I have an Ian in my generation in my family - I don't see that making a comeback!

Icequeen01 · 23/09/2021 22:47

I'm doing well. Both my first and second name have been mentioned as hopefully not returning!

LouNatics · 23/09/2021 22:48

72 Brians in 2019. 146 if you count Bryans too. That puts it just outside the top 300.

Ian will come back. It's a classic

EezyOozy · 23/09/2021 22:49

Derek.

LynetteScavo · 23/09/2021 22:50

DS2 would have been Gwendolyn (Gwen) - I couldn't use it for DD as her hair was too dark.

Bruce was a strong contender.

Names I don't see coming back anytime soon are:
Colin, Nigel, Trevor, Derek, Wayne, Barry, Gary, Sheena, Janice, Maureen, Doreen, Sharon, Tracey, Susan.

chickenandchipsinabasket · 23/09/2021 22:53

Charlotte I think is making a comeback again after the little princess

Gregory. I don't hear of many gregorys around these days

@Fateofthecookies

Archibald, fanny, Gertrude (don’t know why that last one reminds me of a pickle).
Archibald/ Archie is very popular where I am

I can't see Ethel coming back

Generallystruggling · 24/09/2021 10:28

I'd actually love to resurrect Malcolm. He'd be the only Malcolm in his class, nay, in the whole school

There’s a Malcolm in my DC’s school. Violet has been popular for a few years. I can see names like Mildred and Vera coming back.

Names I don’t see coming back any time soon are Bernard, Gary, Linda, Lynnette, Annette, Barry, Donald.

I can't see Ethel coming back

Lily Allen’s DD is called Ethel.

Generallystruggling · 24/09/2021 10:30

Nigel, Derek, Keith too for sure. Basically 50s/60s names but I’m sure they’ll be resurrected eventually.

Brian is still quite popular in the US.

Iimaginethiswillbefun · 24/09/2021 10:42

I know a Vera, an Ada, a Mabel and an Alfred.

I think it will be the Janets and the Sarah’s that will start to fade.

romany4 · 24/09/2021 11:23

I don’t think there’s been a single baby named Gary since 1992 or something

Not true. My nephew is Gary. Born in 2000

Ilovewheelychairs · 24/09/2021 11:32

I know 4 (!!) baby Malcolms. Also taught an 8 year old Ethel this week. Most of those kind of names seem to be making a resurgence around where I am.

So far I don't know any of the following:

Norman
Gerald
Cuthbert (although this was on my friends shortlist)
Egbert

Lots of Agnes/Agatha/Esme/ etc.

Theoldwoman · 24/09/2021 11:48

Nigel
Myrtle
Gladys
Hilda
Errol
Harold

Polkadots2021 · 24/09/2021 11:50

Siegfried and Roy

Frazzledd · 24/09/2021 11:53

Pauline/Paul
Sarah
Tracey
Michelle
Jordan
Tina

BlueberrySugar · 24/09/2021 12:03

@MintJulia

My elderly aunts were called Violet, Mona and Gertrude.

I'm not sure any of their names will, be back in a hurry

Violet is quite popular
escapisum101 · 24/09/2021 12:04

There is a Trevor and a Norman in Dds class...I honestly wouldn't be surprised at any names making a come back at all.

MadamBatty · 24/09/2021 12:20

Kevin, Brian & Deirdre are all ancient Irish names. They’re not going to die out anytime soon in Ireland.

HoldingTheDoor · 24/09/2021 12:29

'Im in my 50s and was very surprised to find a newish friend's son (in his 20s) is called Kevin. I went to school with a few and thought it died out with my generation.

I'm in my 30s and Kevin was the most common boys' name. There were 5 in my class at my first primary school

Bumpsadaisie · 24/09/2021 12:32

Keith

somethingischasingme · 24/09/2021 12:51

I know a Trevor, Ian, Marion , Gary and Doris, all under 13 years old!

CoralBells · 24/09/2021 12:55

I like Marion
