@MissConductUS,

Thank you! No, 10 weeks in and picking up pace. It's healthcare, need I say more.:D

There are at least a few HCPs on this thread, including myself, so you should feel right at home here. Smile

I had never heard of caster sugar before getting on MN. According to Mr Google, regular granulated sugar can be substituted, it just won't dissolve as easily.

American white sugar is very close to castor sugar. It's much finer than British and Irish granulated sugar. I recall my mother marveling at it.

When DD4 makes a Victoria sponge she fills it with stabilised sweetened whipped cream, not a buttercream. Once she got the hang of stabliising the whipped cream it was lovely. She uses whatever jam is open, and strains it because she hates getting berry seeds between her teeth.

Silkiescatz · 22/09/2021 05:04

Tried to fill in DDs vaccine form, she is only eligible for one dose, but it rejected the form. Not sure why, maybe as she is covid positive now and its within 4 weeks.

Champagneforeveryone · 22/09/2021 08:46

Thanks for the good wishes regarding my internet. The next best estimaste is tomorrow as the big green box needs power to it.

Oddly I got notification that it was fixed three minutes after I walked into the EE store. A lady who kept referring to me as "pet" did some wizardry over the phone and declared it still broken so an engineer is being sent today. The engineer will not be able to do anything but they insisted

On the plus side, I am having a new iPhone 13. This wondrous item will cost £2 a month more than I am paying now Shock

Silkiescatz · 22/09/2021 09:34

DH made us some porridge, I thought thats very nice of him but its tasteless the way he made it, then I remembered everything is tasteless atm, well apart from cough medicine and mango.

sueelleker · 22/09/2021 10:32

Prok
The easiest way to make a Victoria Sandwich is to weigh the eggs in their shells, then use equal weights of sugar, butter and flour. This is handy if you want to scale the recipe up or down.

QuestionableMouse · 22/09/2021 11:07

At the dentist to get a tooth out this afternoon and really not looking forward to it. Damn thing has been nothing but trouble this entire year so I'll be glad when it's gone but I hate the dentist.

Champagneforeveryone · 22/09/2021 12:50

Trevor the Internet fixer has bad news. He believes that once the big problem is fixed (probably tomorrow) ours will still not work as it has a big problem all of its own.

Another man is being dispatched, but his likely arrival cannot be confirmed. This must be how it felt waiting for the second coming.

MissConductUS · 22/09/2021 14:07

Champagne, we're getting DS an iPhone 13 for Christmas. Did you have any trouble finding one in stock? I think waiting for the second coming would be better, as presumably, you'd have internet access while you wait.

mouse, good luck with your extraction. Hopeully it comes out easily. Are you thinking of an implant as a replacement?

I had the third Pfizer jab last night before dinner. I felt a bit rubbish overnight, but took some ibuprofen this morning and am feeling better. At least I know I had an immune system reaction. DH has booked his booster for Friday, even though he technically doesn't qualify at this point. I think as long as they have plenty on hand they'll just jab him anyway.

Just got a reminder email for a webinar I signed up for which is tomorrow. Also an email about lost property.

Lemonsandlemonade · 22/09/2021 15:26

@MissConductUS glad your third jab went ok. My husband has his third jab next week.

@QuestionableMouse hope dentist trip went ok! Literally hate the dentist.

Oh no @Champagneforeveryone

DS currently asleep on me as he has had his jabs today. He cried after first then smiled then screamed after second one.

MissConductUS · 22/09/2021 15:34

Lemons, who is eligible for the covid booster in the UK now? Does it matter which vaccine you had originally?

OP posts:
Lemonsandlemonade · 22/09/2021 15:41

@MissConductUS people over a certain age, certain underlying health conditions, nhs workers, care hone staff. Not sure what vaccine he will have. How does it work in USA? I was reading that some states particularly those in the ‘bible belt’ have a low uptake.

MissConductUS · 22/09/2021 16:50

Lemons, currently the booster is only officially available for people with impaired immunity due to disease or prior medical treatment or those who are on an immunosuppressant medication. Pfizer has full approval, Moderna is still operating under emergency use authorization, so your third jab is going to be Pfizer.

The FDA advisory body that looks at such things has recommended booster doses for everyone age 65 and older and I expect that will happen within a week or two. President Biden wanted it for all adults 8 months after their last jab, so I think that's where we're going.

I qualified because I'm on an immunosupressnt. When I got the jab last night they simply asked me if I qualified, I said yes, and they jabbed me. I've advised DH to simply say the same. They're quite happy to do the jabs as they have plenty.

Uptake is lower in some places than others. Regions with lots of knuckleheads lower health literacy have been a problem, but uptake rates have been rising as local hospital beds fill up and people realize that they actually could get quite sick.

Just had a problem tooth out! Very glad it's gone, the bloody thing had an abscess sack around the root that kept filling in. Just hoping it heals well!

Gingerwarthog · 22/09/2021 17:43

Silkie - what news on Silkiecat and her peeing problem (rebel!)?
Back from work and have done a load of washing and made the beds. The house smells of Zoflora (Cypress and Sea-sage).
Swimming this evening with DD.

Silkiescatz · 22/09/2021 20:14

DH should be eligible for booster at some point though had his second in May. I won't but my second was in July. Almost everyone eligible was originally on AZ but will get Pfizer booster.

Looks like DD cannot have her vaccine as its 27 Sept and she has covid now and after filling in the NHS 5 page form it all disappeared and said error but rule seems to be not within 4 weeks. She can get walk in once turns 16.

Ordered a 16th cake for DD. She was telling me in the US every child gets a car for their 16th. Hmm I think there's a subtle hint.

Not heard or seen Silkiecat for a while - I have been in my room as everything is spinning last couple of days - but DH says Silkiecat sits on her littertray but pees outside the litter tray. Don't think her eyessight is the best. Suspect my laptop was targeting as it is plastic and pink like her litter tray.

Oximeter is now at 93/94, DH went what is it supposed to be, I said 95, DH said well that's fine then. He has no medical knowledge but is always very certain in his advice. DS is equally certain only females get covid though and DD being positive and DH was negative is only going to convince him more. Hope its going to improve as hospital website says only come here if absolutely no alternative but GP doesn't want covid people either. At least DH loves being nurse.

Church bells are ringing.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 22/09/2021 20:36

Silkie Best wishes to all of you!

DD made my buy an oximeter when plagues started because I am 'elderly' and it made her feel better.

This is only true on television, but I suspect you knew that. Smile

@MissConductUS

Here is a nice story

We had an au pair about 15 / 16 years ago. It was because she was with with some friends of ours and they ended up with 4 children - too much for an au pair. So because I was working at the time and we had a spare bedroom she came to us. V handy for school pickups etc. But we did do the proper thing where au pairs are meant to be given time to study. & we bought her a cheap ( all we could afford - not to be mean ) bicycle for christmas so she could get around and she got a degree at a local university ( not talking Oxford etc , more vocational but she did it )

She has sent a DM to DH and she now has a job working for a large organisation , she is the manager of their community projects.

When she first came to this country her English was not the greatest , but how lovely she has worked so hard and now has a good job. I do not have a daughter , but I am as proud of her as I could be.

I think that is nice and gentle but what a lovely story.

Not sure if dull and unexciting , but quiet and lovely ( does that count ? )

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 22/09/2021 20:45

Basilisk That definitely counts and is lovely calming! (that does not sound English?!)

Nydj · 22/09/2021 21:01

That’s really lovely, @BasiliskStare.

Some climbing plants I had ordered online arrived today. I need to buy some compost to add to the planting hole and that is my excuse for not digging the holes today.

DH, who likes cake has not tried any of the Victoria sponge cake I made yesterday which, by the way, tastes good, so his loss.

MissConductUS · 22/09/2021 21:27

Mouse, I'm glad your extraction went okay. Use an ice pack or cold compress for the swelling and take some (600mg) of ibuprofen before bed.

That was a lovely story, @BasiliskStare, thanks for sharing it. Having a daughter isn't all sunshine and roses, I can assure you. Grin
