Puffins really are not the most musical of birds. Kingfisher = Eisvogel sounds bettter.
I have an old CD of recordings of birdsongs / calls in different landscapes - think: Alpine forest at dawn etc.

prok a slow cooker is an electric heated ceramic pot which keeps things warm / cooks at low temperature for hours without burning your house to the ground.

It also makes thin and watery stews and most of what you make in it is tinged with disappointment. This may of course be down to my slow cooking talents rather than the concept itself, but personally I much prefer a cast iron pot on the stove (though this is more likely to burn your house down)

We still have no internet, and the latest update is now possibly next Thursday Hmm Things are getting worse rather than better and we are all feeling rather grumpy about the situation.

  1. I have just sneezed, unexpectedly and suddenly, over my laptop.
  2. My young female cat is staring at me disdainfully, probably as a
    result of 1).
  3. My hubby usually brings in the milk, but I did it this morning.
  4. We had vegetable lasagne for dinner.
  5. My son picked his nose today, unaware that I saw him.
  6. My aforementioned cat's brother ate grass and spewed it up in the
    kitchen.
    It's been a thrilling day..........

@Silkiescatz I'm so sorry you're all unwell. It's a horrible experience. Today is day 17 after my positive test and I'm still not back to normal.

Aww thank you Mouse I hope you get better soon and hope your Mum starts to improve.

DH told me as I have covid he is sleeping by himself, this seems pointless as he was ill first and is still ill but get the bed to myself. Should have invited Silkiecat instead, she would not mind.

My oximeter tells me I am an elite athlete with my pulse of 55. I prefer it more than 111 which kept saying call 999, it was being very dramatic in its answers like have you had chest pain in past 24 hours, well yes from cough, then it goes call 999 and get an ambulance. So I changed it to no chest pain then it said got a rash, put yes, call 999 for an ambulance in case you have sepsis. I gave up at that point especially when I looked up hospital and a&e said very busy, avoid coming here. I am starting to improve now. Dh is clearly planning on being ill again, Hmm

Thanks for posting that recipe Nanna.
I'm going to try it in the oven in a roasting tin.
Found an amazing, quirky shop yesterday (while prowling the back streets en route to seafood festival) and ended up buying a portable record player. It's powder blue and in a case and is a thing of beauty. Also bought several LPs (DD loves musicals and we found 'Phantom' with the original cast).
Watching DD curled up on the sofa listening to records was like stepping back to 1986.

A misleading and seriously inaccurate evaluation.
It makes divine soups and as for milk puddings... Really an essential tool .
Anything that needs a slow simmer will do well; and free the cooker for other things.
I have always had one and rejoiced to get a good quality one half price. It is far easier and yes safer then on a hob and frees the hob fpr other things NB works even better if you heat the food THEN putit in the slow cooker.

RIce pudding here I come.

Thank you for the 'slow cooker' info - it is the modern equivalent of 'put it in a pot' and place it to the side of the stove (coalfired in this case), ideal for people who work long hours and eat robust meals. I grew up with them.

I still have to prepare kitchen and bathrooms for the workman tomorrow.

Hello.

My living room stinks of hops as DHs home brew thing managed to slowly empty itself into our wood floor over the course of a week without us noticing (it was supposed to be fermenting). No visible damage to the wood, which is original and over 100 years old and has probably had worse happen to it, but every so often there is a strong hoppy waft in my direction.

Rhubarb The smell of Maische, I do remember it well - that smell will stay for a while. Did you find the leak?

No idea how it happened. He's brewed it successfully many times before, but he's gone wrong somewhere this time!

Last night I dreamt that DH asked me where the scissors were and I replied that they were in the dishwasher.

Hello everyone,

Cleaning done here. One son & girlfriend having a quiet day watching films with bags of crisps and olives; one son supposed to be packing for uni return tomorrow but is watching YouTube - he’s off on the train so minimal stress for me. I’ve just organised a stairlift for my folks and done the usual gulp and intake of breath when I realise how quickly old age seems to be changing what they’re capable of. Comforting myself by looking at a cookery book full of things I’ll never make and planning on watching some rugby in a bit. Hope you all have a pleasant Sunday x

Btw re the slow cooker debate relating to soups a few posts back, I was given an all in one soup maker recently. Anyone got any advice on how to stop it making my entire house smell of fart? It’s putting me off soil entirely.

My mum has two slow cookers. A small one and a big one 'in case people come round.' I asked why she couldn't just put less stuff in the big one. Silly question, apparently...

A friend of DD is taking up residence in Sheffield today to study something I would have loved but, of course, did not exist in my day.

They are doing it largely on their own, so we provided knowledge gained from the relevant MN board. Grin

Went to a local church service today. Then did some shopping for food afterwards. Other than that, it is a quiet day. Currently pondering whether or not to restart formal lessons in French this year or not.

I had a long motorway drive yesterday, which became even longer thanks to stupid and inexplicable delays, so spent something like 5 hours in the car.

I now feel shattered (why is driving so tiring?) and very disinclined to do anything much, but unfortunately a lot of stuff has to be cleared out of the pantry because our new washing machine is being delivered tomorrow and the old one has to be manoeuvred out for it to go in. And my arm/shoulder/neck trouble is still bothering me, after several weeks of pain. Sigh.

Missed DW getting up, felt slightly guilty I'd not made her coffee. Went for a paddle and then spent an amusing and disgusting 30 minutes pulling dead skin of my feet. Late lunch of stir-fry, now off to grind across the galaxy in Elite Dangerous. Went exploring on a whim two weeks ago, looking for rare exobiology. Which is mostly bacteria, so extremely dull and unexciting.
