House buying is proving to be far more difficult than I imagined Hmm

Admittedly my mortgage application does not go in until next month so looking is largely theoretical, but I'm stressed by the lack of choice and extreme price rises in our areas. I am never stressed and it turns out that being stressed does not suit me at all.

We are viewing another house on Friday, I suspect we have been invited to make up the agents viewing numbers. Judicious use of Google maps shows us that the train line runs along the bottom of the garden, a fact cunningly overlooked by both the photos and the write up Hmm

Has anyone seen prok lately?

BasiliskStare · 07/10/2021 00:26

@Champagneforeveryone - I once went to see a house I thought would be perfect - exactly the same - train line along the back garden - I wish they would just say so you could decide, I would say though if everything else about the house is lovely - go and stand outdoors - sometimes if they are down below - the trains aren't very noticeable. The one we went to see the train track was elevated and main line - you would not miss it in a months of sundays. - Such a shame as the house was lovely. Someone has bought it - so good .

Thanks Nydj There seem to be long delays on carpenters especially. I have been explaining this many times to DH and it took a month to get this carpenter in who DH just sent away as he said he couldn't do work until January. But I have got through to DH. I got him to call the carpenter he claims he is using next week and he was Hmm Shock when the guy (who I first contacted around a month and a half ago) won't even come until next week for a quote and won't give a date. He also said he was coming this week after taking 3 weeks to reply to e-mail. The carpenter also mentioned that everyone is calling him and he gets them all mixed up.

So I decided maybe we need to learn carpentry ourselves. Probably me as the only DIY DH has done was putting a handle on a kitchen cupboard door and he put it on the hinge side. I discovered the plumbing to a dishwasher normally goes in the next cabinet when its was a built in kitchen before that was custom made. So that's another reason that DH can't have the fridge under the sink like he wanted. I have no idea why he thinks its a good idea to put an electrical item under the sink anyway. The plumber already told him it was not a good idea and was not physically possible but then he decided he would get another plumber.

Asked DH how we would need to alter cabinets for adding dishwasher whilst I looked it up and he came back with we need to take the whole kitchen out and DH said he can take electrics out himself (this is illegal so he is not going near them) but DH said he can't do taking shelves out. He suggested unscrewing the worktop and seeing if the rest just collapses.

Then he came up later with a more viable plan very excited that he had worked something out of just taking the unit out where we need the dishwasher to go and putting it to the side of the unit with sink in and to the side of unit with electric plug in.

I really hope the plumber can get the carpenter he knows to come for the dishwasher, rest can be sorted in January.

I was wondering where Prok was too. I am still doing Duolingo Russian. I probably should be doing carpentry instead though.

Silkieschickens · 07/10/2021 00:50

We also spent so long having this not useful discussion that we didn't get the fridge or sort the clothes.

mathanxiety · 07/10/2021 01:26

I still have about half of the basement storage spot of doom to clear out and donate. The wheels fell off my plan from 10 years ago of bunging everything into a moving truck and sorting later at the 'sorting later' part, but now that the LL has decreed that everything needs to move because they're turning the basement into a tiny 'garden' apartment, I can't put it off any longer. I'll need household item disposal stickers from the local supermarket to make sure the truck takes them. There is also a behemoth of an old tv which I will have to get junk people to give me an estimate for.

The car I am buying was finally delivered today, and to my completely untrained eye and ear it seems to be fine. Getting to this point has been a long and winding road.

The weather was cool here today, with heavy overcast. I made a hearty chicken soup and added noodles left over from a previous dinner. DD3 is having some with a roll. DD4 went to the 7-11 and bought herself a small frozen pizza, then made a cinnamon streusel coffee cake.

mathanxiety · 07/10/2021 01:29

@Prokupatuscrakedatus - are you ok?

BasiliskStare · 07/10/2021 02:06

I have cleaned the fridge and the under the sink cupboard. Small jobs , but rather satisfying in their own way.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 07/10/2021 06:00

@mathanxiety
Thank you for asking. I am fine, but extremely busy.Back Friday. Nothing exciting though!

Pheebs2021 · 07/10/2021 07:25

Away day with work today ... my anxiety did not get the message and has been well and truly in full force all night. Thank god for coffee!

IWanderedLonely · 07/10/2021 07:46

I have a mango chutney scotch egg to take to work for my dinner(lunch). A lady on our market makes lots of different ones. My favourite so far is caramelised onion.

Silkieschickens · 07/10/2021 07:49

Enjoy your car Math

I hate away day Pheebs so you have my sympathy especially away day fun activities.

Welcome back Prok and reassuring to know nothing exciting has happened.

Dd is running late again. Ds has already left. I was watching kitchen making videos but they seem US dominated and they arent the same as our kitchen, the closest was when they did a 1950s handbuilt kitchen and added a dishwasher but it wasn't integrated.

Silkieschickens · 07/10/2021 08:28

Just had baguette, butter and strawberry jam. Dh is having his morning nap as is Silkiecat.

sueelleker · 07/10/2021 09:18

@BasiliskStare

Ooh *@Squirrel26* I read an article about Pro Leith's previous house - any chance you could tell me which channel her new house is on ( assuming Dog will let you use the computer and has not eaten the keyboard along with the remote controls ) Grin DH has a fancy new TV system put in & I now end up watching what is on very often because I can't work the control.

What I need is a massive ( my eyes are bad ) Control - which just has FOYLE'S WAR , MORSE , LEWIS - press 1 2 or 3 - for other options get your magnifying glass out Grin

Prue's garden is on More4 on Wednesdays at 9pm. Probably me as the only DIY DH has done was putting a handle on a kitchen cupboard door and he put it on the hinge side. Shock
Champagneforeveryone · 07/10/2021 09:22

I cracked and threw away the Aldi knock off potato waffles in favour of a box of proper Birds Eye ones. My rabid penny-pinching was bound to have a limit, and I believe I may have found it Grin

languagelover96 · 07/10/2021 09:24

Just had breakfast. Looking forward to this weekend as well.

Squirrel26 · 07/10/2021 10:29

I hated buying a house. I viewed about 3 and then I found one I quite liked and could afford and I was done. It’s worked out OKish. I don’t love my house but also I can’t imagine having the energy to move.

The builders belonging to the people next door are drilling. They bought it for a ridiculous amount more than I paid for mine and according to my other neighbour are spending another very large amount of money ripping out all the insides and re-doing it. I’ve never met them, they don’t live here yet.

Pheebs2021 · 07/10/2021 10:51

I have a complete hatred for 'organised fun' and 'team building' put the kettle on bring me a packet of chocolate biscuits give me a sincere well done/feedback from projects or whatever and leave me alone to do my job I find that more motivating!

HildaTablet · 07/10/2021 12:25

I am sincerely glad to say that I’ve never been required to go on any sort of team-building exercise in my life.

Although there was once an event that I wasn’t part of, and was retrospectively quite sorry to have missed, because it turned out to have involved collaboratively baking and decorating a cake and, without blowing my own trumpet too much, I am very good at that. It might’ve have been my only chance to shine in a workplace setting.

MissConductUS · 07/10/2021 15:54

@BasiliskStare, I adore Foyles' War! It's the show that got me addicted to British TV.

The team-building thing was a management fad here that has thankful blow over a long time ago. If working together doesn't do it silly games won't either.

I think they do it to make us extra happy to be back in the office.

MissConductUS · 07/10/2021 18:30

I'm about to start my long weekend. DS is somewhere en route between Boston and NY. Google Maps shows fairly clear sailing and the weather is lovely. Hopefully, he'll be home in plenty of time to have a takeaway with us for dinner tonight.

I saw a dog in a high-vis harness this morning. It was bright yellow. It was towing a young woman along on a leash.

And to make my day even better...

my new top I ordered for the weekend -very much not a size 12- has come as a size 12! Even next is telling me to put the Chocolate Biscuits down.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 07/10/2021 21:39

Do dogs have to wear orange during hunting season where you are MissC? Mine has a very fetching orange vest. He absolutely hates it :-D

That sounds amazing!

Scotch eggs are actually quite trendy here in the US now - they're available in venues other than Irish pubs.
