I'm sorry you're feeling pooly, Pheebs, and good luck with the test. This is about the time of year that my fall allergies start up and can cause similar symptoms.

We had a good Zoom call with the kids and my MIL last night. DS had not read the new article DH sent to his email about his future employer adopting a remote work policy for most workers because he doesn't check that email regularly and requested in the future that we just text him links. He then read the article and was delighted that he might be able to move home after graduation and not have to rent a flat in Boston and commute to work. This of course would save buckets of money and he'd soon be able to buy a nice car on his own. I really don't think he was looking forward to living on his own in a cheap flat or having a roommate. He is quite cautious with money and likes his homecooked meals and his mum doing his laundry. The cats will also be happy to have him back and not be alone in the house all day.

We also decided that he will drive himself home this weekend rather than us going to get him. He's going to leave on Thursday which will allow him to miss a lot of the traffic.

Good on you DS getting a job even better if it suits him to be at home to work.

Today went out to lunch. DS grabbed the tomato off my plate and proceeded to try and eat it. 🙈.

Champagneforeveryone · 04/10/2021 18:16

DS has his driving test on Friday Shock

There's been some conjecture as to whether it will go ahead as he's not super confident and there was an option to swop with another student who is test ready. However that's no longer an option so he's going to give it a shot.

Secretly (and somewhat selfishly) I hope he doesn't pass as it will delay him being loose on the road independently Blush

Silkieschickens · 04/10/2021 18:23

Fridge is now repaired though have to test it tomorrow morning. Really nice guy who loved Silkiecat and rabbit and asked if they got on. DH pointed out that rabbit likes Silkiecat but feeling is not mutual.

Then plumber came finally and will give quotes and said they don't use blowtorches which is good being in a thatch.

DH has gone to piano and taken DD who wants to go shopping. Hopefully they are getting a Thai.

That's similar symptoms to what we have had here at the start Pheebs2021 though hopefully not the same as I'm on day 21 with shares in immodium now. Silkiecat also hasn't got the memo cats are supposed to stay with sick people, she just walks off.

MissConductUS · 04/10/2021 19:11

Thanks, Lemons. He did an internship remotely with this firm's Boston office last spring and received a really good job offer from them at the end. He wants to work there, so he accepted the offer and we have all been assuming he'd have to stay in the Boston area and then look into a transfer to New York after he'd been there for a while. Unless of course, he wound up loving Boston. It is a relief to know that he has a good, professional job lined up for when he graduates. He still has mates in this area from secondary school and a local crew team that he's rowed with for years, so those are other reasons he'd like to move back in next year.

Champagne, I remember those days when my two took driving lessons and then took their tests and started driving. In addition to having to worry about them on the road, prepare to add several gold bars to your automobile insurance payments for having him covered.

Silkie, you're lucky the fridge was fixable. Covid has completely hobbled the supply chains for white goods. We had to replace a fridge last year and it took over a month to get one. We have a smaller fridge in the garage that we limped by with until the new one came in.

Silkieschickens · 04/10/2021 19:31

We have lots of supply chain issues here as well MissC You can get a fridge or a appliance but if you want a certain one the delays can be very long. I want to change our built in oven to a Rangemaster, we need the joiner out first as kitchen needs altering, but someone on another thread said they are trying to get one now and can't get it until March Shock We are looking for a different model and I saw a place with 1 in stock so we may be OK but I need to wait for joiner to say if it is possible to fit. They are here on Wednesday and we may have another one this week too - there are timber shortages here as well and prices have skyrocketed for that. Our fridge is a just turned 3 year old Bosch so I am not impressed it has gone wrong so quickly, the repair man fitted a new thermostat and DH said he said to wait until morning to see if it has worked. Fortunately we live next to a food shop, we were ideally located for a pandemic and a petrol crisis. Grin Its as I don't drive I got everything walkable.

Champagneforeveryone · 04/10/2021 19:34

That's interesting miss, I've had a panicky Google as we will need a new fridge freezer as well as new sofas when we move, but thankfully the good folk at John Lewis seem to have my back for now Wink

DS will have his own insurance, in the UK it's very much recommended that they have their own policy from the outset. It's also illegal to add a child to a policy as a named driver if they will be the one doing the majority of driving in the car.

HelenaJustina · 04/10/2021 20:41

Survived another mad Monday. Squash stuffed with cheesy leeks is slowly cooking in the oven for when DH gets back from picking up DC1+2 from Scouts. I’m hungry!

Lemonsandlemonade · 04/10/2021 21:06

@HelenaJustina that sounds amazing squash and cheesy leeks. How long does it cook for?

Gingerwarthog · 04/10/2021 21:15

Helena I wouldn't mind the recipe for that please!

HelenaJustina · 04/10/2021 21:43

Hopefully recipe herewith!

Yay!

HelenaJustina · 04/10/2021 21:47

I use a good mature cheddar rather than gruyere

Silkieschickens · 05/10/2021 02:21

Silkiecat refused to come with DH to the bed clinging her paws into her cardboard box.

DH and I were discussing the fridge and the plumbing. Only DH is half deaf but wont admit it so you ask one question like will the fridge work in the morning and get the reply yes the plumber doesnt expect delays to install a boiler.

BasiliskStare · 05/10/2021 02:26

@Silkieschickens Little dog has decided he cannot jump up or down from the bed - he is too old. We need to monitor him & make sure we can carry him to where he wants to be . Although Dh has said maybe we should get him some steps so he can get on to the bed. Oh the decisions Grin

Silkieschickens · 05/10/2021 02:32

Silkiecat also cannot jump on the bed so dh carries her but I have to not look or she gets very flustered at being seen being carried. Though add a tin of tuna of top of things and her jumping ability improves considerably.

I found a nice oval shaped basket under a pile of summer picnic blankets and the like out on the back porch. It is now dusted down and reclaimed as Dcat's kitchen hangout. This is better than having Dcat lying on the floor immediately behind me while I cook. I still have to solve the problem of Dcat periodically digging her front claws into my thighs and rear end while I prep food for cooking. Maybe sturdy jeans I don't care much about is the best solution.

I don't know how I survived Driver's Ed and the 50 hours of accompanied driving the DCs had to do in order to get their licenses. I never took any of them out on the highway. I think it's probably more difficult to weave a fair-sized SUV along streets originally designed for horse and buggies, with parked vehicles on both sides, than on a purpose-built Interstate.

Gingerwarthog · 05/10/2021 04:55

@HelenaJustina

I use a good mature cheddar rather than gruyere
Thank you! This looks great.
Lemonsandlemonade · 05/10/2021 05:15

@HelenaJustina thanks that looks so yummy. Will be trying that out.

DoctorTwo · 05/10/2021 07:12

I bought two books yesterday, a biography of Valentino Rossi and Trans by Helen Joyce. If I wasn't going to look at a car this morning I'd certainly be reading one of them, can't decide which to read first.

Pheebs2021 · 05/10/2021 07:22

My dog uses her bed as a launch pad to get onto our bed. Good job she's so cute!
Silkecat sounds like a diva. I think I love her.

Silkieschickens · 05/10/2021 13:21

Silkiecat is a diva. This morning - she woke up and discovered DH napping. This made Silkiecat Angry, she naps about 20 hours a day but DH is not allowed to nap, and she woke him up.

DH is now napping again but its OK as Silkiecat is also napping. DS's extra school uniform has arrived.

We managed to get DD out of the house by 7.45am which was like a military operation. She keeps being late for school. DS leaves before her and his school is 5 mins walk, I have no idea what he does there so early.

HildaTablet · 05/10/2021 14:59

We’ve had two workmen here installing a new burglar alarm system. BT/Openreach are switching off the analogue phone network our existing alarm (and every similar alarm) uses to ring into the system so we have to switch over to using the WiFi signal instead. It’s a massive pain as it’s costing us £££ and the workmen have now been here for over 5 hours. They’re quite jolly, but still....

Worst of all, we’ve had to clear everything out from the understairs Cupboard of Doom (where the alarm box is) and now we need to put everything back.

Sigh.

BasiliskStare · 05/10/2021 16:15

@HildaTablet I have an Understairs Cupboard of Doom - I feel your pain

MissConductUS · 05/10/2021 16:36

Hilda, we switched to a Ring alarm system last spring. It's so much handier than the old one. I love being able to use the Ring app to manage it. We added a Ring doorbell and two cameras outside at the same time.

I am going to take Thursday afternoon and Friday as annual leave since DS is coming home on Thursday for the long weekend.
