ZZ, for us the killer is car insurance. We have two fairly new cars and the old banger DS has. Because of his age and gender, the insurance coverage for him is really expensive. Adding a fourth car with DD as a driver would be a lot of money, on top of what we are spending on tuition and fees for the two of them.

It is a worry.

The weather is appalling, so much so that I have actually bought a coat to work.

Unfortunately I've left it in the car on the far side of the car park Hmm

BasiliskStare · 01/10/2021 00:52

I went out with an umbrella and for once remembered to bring it home. This is an achievement for me .

Silkieschickens · 01/10/2021 01:09

I have been researching cooker measurements, we currently have a built in double oven but one oven has failed and we would both prefer a cooker but needed to check measurements online. I asked DH if he had measured the one in the kitchen and he said no as when he measured the dishwasher the electrician pointed out he was out by 5cms and so now he thinks things should only be measured by professionals.

Silkieschickens · 01/10/2021 01:13

When we were at old house I designed a kitchen then DH decided he would design an alternative kitchen. When we took both designs to the shop the manager said DHs kitchen design was the worst one he had seen in his life and all the measurements were wrong and he said it did not comply with any fire regulations or allow a person to turn around.

Pheebs2021 · 01/10/2021 06:12

@Silkiescatz did you ask the manager to repeat that so you could record this so you can use the memo at different times forever?

So tired today the weather is appalling and I just can't be bothered today!

BasiliskStare · 01/10/2021 06:13

@Silkieschickens Re old house kitchen Was DH downhearted or did he just shrug it off as "just one of those things" ha ha

Silkieschickens · 01/10/2021 06:44

DH was quite indignant about it at first saying the only reason the manager preferred my design was as it was more expensive. But then we tried his design out at home and there was hardly any space between the units for a person to get in. DH is quite tight with money so had tried to do the fewest units possible but it was a large room.

We went with my design but he was quite sulky about it for a few years referring to it as my kitchen. He did though tell his mother about what the manager had said and she thought it was very amusing especially as DH used to make fun of his Mum saying she was stupid for things. He has since left all the planning and design to me though it always throws workmen especially electricians who seem to think its not possible for a female to know about electrics.

One year he announced he was taking over holiday planning. That lasted one hotel. He had been bragging how he had found a hotel just like I had found the previous year for cheaper then we got to his hotel and he hadn't checked the location and he was really mad about it as it was in the middle of nowhere whereas mine was by the ski slope and said he resigned.

Silkieschickens · 01/10/2021 06:53

Everyone is awake, well apart from Silkiecat but she needs her beauty sleep. DH is having his coffee. He got some elderflower cordial from the shop yesterday which I love, have only been drinking lemon this past month and getting bored of it.

I said white rabbit first thing this morning, my granny used to insist you should say it first thing in every month starting with a R for good luck for the month. But then I checked the list of big premium bond winners and I am not on it so I'm not convinced it works.

Lemonsandlemonade · 01/10/2021 07:24

@Silkiescatz laughing here at your DH. Reminded me of a story that my mum only planned the holiday once (usually my dads job) to book holiday. The one time she does we end up turning up to the airport a day late! She had got date wrong.

My DMIL who I get on came for a cuppa yesterday said I was bad for waking DH up at 8am so he could come get DS and take him downstairs. I needed to let DH sleep apparently as he works hard 🙄. I had been up at 4 and 6 with DS and it’s not like I sit on my bum all day.

Lemonsandlemonade · 01/10/2021 07:24

Get on with not get on 😳

Champagneforeveryone · 01/10/2021 07:34

I am in a queue for diesel, twelve minutes in and the pumps are in sight Confused

Mintyt · 01/10/2021 07:42

We have just been told rather than the 2 weeks in the office one week WFH we now have to do 2 set days and can choose what do do on the others days in or out up to us

Silkieschickens · 01/10/2021 07:46

Flowers for the MIL comment Lemons and Grin at the holiday.

Trying to get DD out of the house for school, she is singing away in world of her own and should have left by now. DS always leaves 40 minutes early. Just need them to average out.

Having cough medicine and a banana. At least its the weekend tonight, not that it makes much difference now DH wfh.

Champagneforeveryone · 01/10/2021 08:07

I have a full tank of diesel, though it was very expensive and from my least favourite petrol station - it appears I'm now at the age where I can claim a favourite petrol station Grin

I was turned away from my usual choice as I wasn't official enough and the one with the Greggs was closed as well

HildaTablet · 01/10/2021 08:29

The petrol station nearest to us is closed, with a NO FUEL sign at the front. So that's that. Not sure about the others hereabouts, although I spied a fair-sized queue from afar at another one when I was dropping DH off at the station the other day. In a stroke of huge luck, he'd filled up just a few days before the big panic started, and a full tank gives us something like 400 miles, so we're just making short, essential local journeys for now.

Silkies, v amusing about your DH and measurements. I think when you mentioned the saga of him getting DS's trouser size and measuring the inside leg from the waist, we could see how the problems might arise Grin

Squirrel26 · 01/10/2021 09:42

I am hoping that my favourite petrol station (with a co-op attached) has some petrol this evening as I need some chocolate as well as fuel (I ate all of the pre-payday doughnuts.) Apparently diesel is more of an issue than petrol round here so it might be OK.

HelenaJustina · 01/10/2021 17:21

I’m sitting pitch side at DC4’s football training because I don’t want to waste the fuel driving home and back to pick her up. This is a bit irking for two reasons; it’s not as warm as the sunshine makes it look, and, there is a long list of things I could usefully be doing at home.

Silkieschickens · 01/10/2021 17:26

DH went to bed for a nap. Silkiecat then cried so DH went to take her to go on the bed with him. She came on then went to look out the window. DH went can you see doggies Silkiecat? Silkiecat then jumped off and went downstairs. Silkiecat is scared of dogs and has returned to her mattress in the dining room, she agreed with DH that an afternoon nap was needed.

Silkieschickens · 01/10/2021 19:18

DSs lunchcard said he had 2 quorn dippers for lunch for £3. DH and I are now wondering if someone stole DSs lunchcard as he normally limits himself to 50p a day and never eats anything vegetarian.

We have had an e-mail from DDs school saying parents should not worry about school closing due to coronavirus as less than 10% of the children are currently off with it. This was combined with the advert in the village newsletter for extra 12 staff to build coffins.

MissConductUS · 01/10/2021 20:11

I had to google quorn dippers. Could he have thought they were chicken nuggets?

There was a Krispy Kreme box in the break room this afternoon. Usually this means that they are so stale as to be inedible, but these were fresh, so I had one. They were the original glazed variety. That was a nice treat.

DH has just forwarded me an interesting news article. The firm that has offered DS a job when he graduates has announced that they plan to let most employees work remotely from anywhere in the US. He did his internship with them last spring remotely, from home, and we have a room we could easily makeover into a home office for him.

He'd save a lot of money if he didn't have to rent a flat in Boston next year. Of course, our grocery and utility costs would go way up, but I'm sure he'd be willing to contribute. It would also be lovely to have him home.

Sunny and fairly warm today - but getting colder in the evenings.
DD still feeling rough and curled up with me on the couch. We're watching a series about two German bikers travelling from Cologne to Goa via the Himalayas. It's really good.
DD now wants a motorbike in a few yearsConfused

DD now wants a motorbike in a few years

The three most important things you can do to extend your life expectancy are not smoking, not gaining a lot of weight and not buying a motorcycle. In the majority of accidents, you don't stand a chance on a motorcycle.

Gingerwarthog · 01/10/2021 21:25

Don't worry Miss. I'm sure if I buy her a biker jacket she'll get over it.
It's kind of glamorous though isn't it.
