Have most English people had a tunnocks tea cake before?

Or is it quite an unusual thing to have? Looking to send a “Scottish” treat along with money to English relative (teenager) for birthday. Just a little token gift to go with the money.

Just wondered if you kind people could do a quick straw pole for me !

I'd have thought so yes.

SpamIAm · 14/09/2021 12:44

I'm welsh and my tunnocks lifetime count is probably in the thousands rather than the hundreds.

Yes we have them all the time (South West).
Sorry.

Calamityhuman · 14/09/2021 12:45

I have but I don’t know if I speak for most people. How about some whisky instead!

OrangeTortoise · 14/09/2021 12:45

Yes I have (I'm English)

TheQueenOfDreams · 14/09/2021 12:45

I’d only ever heard about it on mumsnet so thought I’d try it.

Rollergirl1980 · 14/09/2021 12:45

However we would be thrilled to receive some in the post anyway (hint hint 😆).

EssentiallyDisorganised · 14/09/2021 12:45

I would have thought so, they sell them in all the supermarkets here. What we don't get is tablet, that's what I bring back from holidays in Scotland.

QuestionableMouse · 14/09/2021 12:45

They're not so rare imo.

They also don't tend to ship well (melt, get squished.)

Proper Scottish tablet is the biz! I'd be delighted receiving a bar of that. 😊

Yummypancake · 14/09/2021 12:45

I am aware this may be a blanket “of course we have” ! Sorry if I am way off asking this

Speaking for one English person (me) yes I've had many and they are available in every supermarket that I go in, I think they even sell them in Aldi. I wouldn't think of them as being particularly Scottish if that's what you are looking for

bizboz · 14/09/2021 12:46

Yes, widely available. And possibly wouldn't survive a postal journey very well!

Yummypancake · 14/09/2021 12:46

Ok, I might just go with Scottish tablet then, thanks x

Good call on them not shipping well

We eat them frequently but I agree with others about tablet. I don't think I've even seen that in the shop. Definitely more obscure than teacakes.

NotDavidTennant · 14/09/2021 12:47

If you want to send them a Scottish treat that is uncommon in England send them some tablet.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 14/09/2021 12:47

Package them really well to post. Once the chocolate is cracked it's totally pointless. I'd probably send the caramel wafers instead for that reason.

Also, I had no idea they weren't easily available in England!

I can't buy the boxes of 10, cos I eat them all.

Mumdiva99 · 14/09/2021 12:48

Yes....but normally a cheap copy brand. Tunnocks are in Aldi though as someone above mentioned so I've had those too.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 14/09/2021 12:48

Oh, they are available, sorry, just reading the posts!

Thank goodness. Was nearly sending mercy parcels south of the border.

Aldi scottish tablet is pretty good, next to the chocolate and sweets.

JoyOrbison · 14/09/2021 12:48

What about gifts from the tunnocks shop? Or a tin nick themed item? I have a round tunnick teacake cushion which is fab

Legomania · 14/09/2021 12:48

I didn't realise they were a Scottish thing!

GreyhoundG1rl · 14/09/2021 12:49

They'd arrive like mush, wouldn't they?

Tubbyinthehottub · 14/09/2021 12:49

I didn't realise they are Scottish, we have them loads. I'm from Northumberland. Empire biscuits are nice as well.

ShingleBeach · 14/09/2021 12:50

Send tablet or that powdery rock.
