Have most English people had a tunnocks tea cake before?

Or is it quite an unusual thing to have? Looking to send a “Scottish” treat along with money to English relative (teenager) for birthday. Just a little token gift to go with the money.

@IglesiasPiggle

It's like an inferior fudge

ShockShockShock I have read more offensive comments on here than I can count but this takes the whole biscuit tin.

After I posted that I did think 'oh that might be a bit offensive to the tablet devotees' Grin
GreyhoundG1rl · 14/09/2021 13:40

Well, I don't feel I'm missing out...

Wombat96 · 14/09/2021 13:40

I was gutted when I saw they now have palm oil in them.

I'm in the Midlands and we have them alot from the shop. I have a pack, sitting in the garage, so the kids don't eat them all! They do squish easily, so not ideal to post.

Geamhradh · 14/09/2021 13:42

I had lots of teacakes as a child, but I think they were Jacobs or Cadbury's.
In my neck of the woods, Tunnocks are associated with caramel wafers.

GotLittUp · 14/09/2021 13:42

We particularly like the dark chocolate ones... (in the South, sorry, so just as popular down here).

BoredZelda · 14/09/2021 13:44

Tablet is nothing like fudge.

TheRebelle · 14/09/2021 13:45

Yes I love them! I can’t get Mother’s Pride Scottish plain bread in England for love nor money though, but I don’t suppose a teenager would think a loaf of bread was a treat 🤷‍♀️

BikeRunSki · 14/09/2021 13:46

Yes, I’m English, 50s and grew up in the SE. I’ve been aware of Tunnocks teacakes and caramel bars all my life! They were a treat a my GPs house.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 14/09/2021 13:47

Love 'em! South coast here.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 14/09/2021 13:49

I much prefer tablet to the soft smooth types of fudge, crumbly fudge is nice though.

I had some recently. It was brought down as a present. It was disappointing ☹️ Don’t know if my tastebuds have changed but the crust wasn’t as blooming gorgeous as I remembered.
Bekind2yourself · 14/09/2021 13:51

Yes, they are widely available in all the supermarkets.

I also agree with tablet. We gave them as favours at our wedding. Both of us are English but with Scottish heritage. All the English guests were intrigued by it as they’d never had/heard of it before.

Vaccinebeliever · 14/09/2021 13:52

I love Tunnocks but the milk chocolate ones are everywhere but the dark chocolate ones aren't that easy to come by in Wales.

godmum56 · 14/09/2021 13:53

yes we get tunnocks down here....south uk and the caramel wafers.

scully29 · 14/09/2021 14:04

I would say that tablet, fudge and tunnocks tea cakes are all delicious.

diddl · 14/09/2021 14:12

I didn't even know that they are ScottishBlush

Did/do Tunnocks also make Snowballs?

ssd · 14/09/2021 14:15

Bloody love a tunnocks teacake but I'm from Glasgow Grin

saraclara · 14/09/2021 14:17

Tunnocks teacakes and wafers are common enough round here (South East)

But if you mentioned tablet, you'd be met with bewilderment.

KittenKong · 14/09/2021 14:17

Yea they make snowballs and also something log shaped with a coconut coating (I seem to remember?)

crapbuttrue · 14/09/2021 14:20

Yes but don't let that stop you. Add some wager biscuits in for good measure.

TabithaTiger · 14/09/2021 14:21

Now I really want a Tunocks tea cake!

Marcee · 14/09/2021 14:23

Never heard of a tunnock? North west England

diamondpony80 · 14/09/2021 14:26

I'd never heard of tablet until I met my DH. It reminds him of his childhood in Scotland so I always get him some at Christmas. He's a big fan of Tunnocks teacakes and caramel wafers as well. I'd been eating those long before I met him though!

Fink · 14/09/2021 14:26

I was surprised when I checked in to a hotel in Scotland and they'd left Tunnocks tea cakes as a 'Scottish' treat. I never thought of them as Scottish before, they're definitely available all over England. A bit like shortbread. Send him a quaich! They travel better than food anyway.
