Have most English people had a tunnocks tea cake before?

Or is it quite an unusual thing to have? Looking to send a “Scottish” treat along with money to English relative (teenager) for birthday. Just a little token gift to go with the money.

Tablet sounds fabulous!

Is it easy to make?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/09/2021 14:30

We definitely have Tunnocks tea cakes and caramel wafers.

I've never seen their Caramel Logs in England though, and I love them.

Not difficult but hard work!

I sent my English sister a dvd box set of Still Game for a retirement present. She’d never seen it before so it was a bit risky but she bloody loves it and is regularly quoting lines from it over the phone. Grin

However, I think that’s not really suitable for a teen so maybe some tablet, toffee or some empire biscuits or…
A Spoon from Troon. 🤣🤣

Tiredmumno1 · 14/09/2021 14:36

Yup, as a matter of fact we have a box in the cupboard (kids love them)

@diddl I didn't know that Tunnock's possibly did snowballs, I have a pack of Lee's though.

I also didn't know they were Scottish (I do now 😁)

diddl · 14/09/2021 14:40

I remember having Snowballs as a kid, not sure of the make though.

I was thinking possibly Tunnocks as a similar centre.

Tubbyinthehottub · 14/09/2021 14:48

@Mariell they are suitable for vegetarians. Tunnocks ones.

readytosell · 14/09/2021 14:49

Oh gosh I love tunnocks tea cakes (and their wafers and snowballs too). I remember having being offered one when I came over here for uni and being amazed at how they managed to get such a thin layer of chocolate over such a soft filling. We certainly don't have anything similar in my home country.

But I've seen them in most supermarkets wherever I've lived in England. I would have said to my non-native brain that they were a British thing, not necessarily a Scottish thing.

Hen2018 · 14/09/2021 14:49

I hadn’t really thought about them being Scottish. We have them about once a month and they were always served at children’s birthday parties growing up. Welsh Marches.

Missingthesea · 14/09/2021 14:52

I'd suggest tablet and macaroon bars Grin

Lucked · 14/09/2021 14:55

I can’t believe people didn’t know they were Scottish. There is a lion rampant on the box!

I think it is a nice thing to send even if they have had them before.

Hen2018 · 14/09/2021 14:55

I’ve never been able to find Empire biscuits outside Scotland.

This!
Crankley · 14/09/2021 14:59

I used to love a Tunnocks Tea Cake, until they added palm oil to the ingredients. Not bought any since.

mrsfeatherbottom · 14/09/2021 15:11

I had completely forgotten about Edinburgh rock until this thread! I used to love it.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/09/2021 15:16

You used to have a teacake, caramel wafer (milk or dark!) or caramel log after you gave blood in Scotland. I don't know if you still do, or if they've gone healthy!

Sorrycantreadtest · 14/09/2021 15:16

Tunnocks tea cakes and xaramel.wafers are the first thing we add to our weekly shopping deli very! Amazon also do them in boxes of 36. We are training our dgc to love them as well! Never had a caramel log - they sound great. Not keen on Edinburgh rock, generally find it too sickly. Walkers shortbread is amazing. A really lovely single malt is enjoyable as well. You can also send haggis. Love a bit of haggis in our house.

SirenSays · 14/09/2021 15:27

I hadn't! I discovered them a month ago and can't stop eating them!

diddl · 14/09/2021 15:45

I hadn't heard of Empire biscuits.

We have something similar here called a Hanseat-2 shortbread biscuits with a jam filling & half red (usually more pink)/half white icing on the top.

Ifailed · 14/09/2021 15:55

I can’t believe people didn’t know they were Scottish. There is a lion rampant on the box!

Why would that indicate they are Scottish?

EssentiallyDisorganised · 14/09/2021 16:19

DH always buys Edinburgh rock when we go to Scotland, it's getting harder to find though. I don't like it.

I do like an Empire biscuit as well. So much sugar!

BlueThursday · 14/09/2021 17:00

How about a pack of tattie scones? My brother misses them the most being outside Scotland

KittenKong · 14/09/2021 17:28

M&S and waitrose sell reasonable ones!

Patapouf · 14/09/2021 18:13

I didn't realise they were Scottish!

dilmor · 14/09/2021 18:22
