Have most English people had a tunnocks tea cake before?

Or is it quite an unusual thing to have? Looking to send a “Scottish” treat along with money to English relative (teenager) for birthday. Just a little token gift to go with the money.

OP posts:

What about Edinburgh rock? or as I like to call it chalk lol I always loved it

OhGiveUp · 14/09/2021 13:17

I have them in the fridge all the time ( Yorkshire ) available everywhere here. My Scottish husband would be upset if there wasn't when he's at home.
I'm not even English and I eat them a lot.

I'd go for tablet, we're in the SE and can get Tunnocks tea cakes and caramel wafers in any supermarket.

Bighousebustup · 14/09/2021 13:22

I’m Scottish living in England and I really miss tablet so that would be my choice, or Edinburgh rock.

Tickledtrout · 14/09/2021 13:24

Yes but the dark chocolate ones, and the dark caramel wafers( more post box resilient??) are a rare treat down here and something my teens make a beeline for when we visit.

Whattheschitt · 14/09/2021 13:24

I've never had one.

CyanideInTheFishPaste · 14/09/2021 13:24

Yech, cannot stand tablet. I've got a sweet tooth but that stuff is turbo charged sweetness.

Sisisimone · 14/09/2021 13:25

@EssentiallyDisorganised

I would have thought so, they sell them in all the supermarkets here. What we don't get is tablet, that's what I bring back from holidays in Scotland.
Oh god yes, would love to get sent some tablet in the post. Have had thousands of tunnocks tea cakes in my time, didn't even realise they were Scottish
wetfloor · 14/09/2021 13:26

I love them!!!!

tunnocksreturns2019 · 14/09/2021 13:27

Ooh yes despite my username send tablet and Edinburgh rock. I love Edinburgh Gin too - the rhubarb one. Thank you. Oh also some Moffat toffee. You are so kind, thank you 🤣

garlictwist · 14/09/2021 13:28

I didn't even know they were a Scottish thing. So yes, I would have thought that everyone's had one before.

Slayduggee · 14/09/2021 13:28

Yes I have and they are the food of the Gods (South West England)

Is it like fudge?
annacondom · 14/09/2021 13:29

Nope. Have seen the name but never tried (South West).

Anoisagusaris · 14/09/2021 13:30

What’s tablet?

Madcats · 14/09/2021 13:31

My teen daughter would hug you if she was sent some Tunnocks -very much a treat in our house (Somerset).

CyanideInTheFishPaste · 14/09/2021 13:31

It's like an inferior fudge. Fudge is soft and sweet and buttery whereas tablet has a harder texture and is super-sweet, and you can't really taste anything aside from the sugar.

LeafOfTruth · 14/09/2021 13:31

Oh, OP. WHY did you have to mention glorious Tunnock's teacakes??? I shan't be able to focus now until I go downstairs and get one with a nice cup of tea.

ISpyCobraKai · 14/09/2021 13:32

Tablet is like crumbly fudge, kinda.
It's delicious but very, very sweet.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 14/09/2021 13:32

They’re a regular fixture in our cupboard.
I didn’t realise they were Scottish

scully29 · 14/09/2021 13:36

yes sorry they are a lunch box regular here in Cornwall, they have them in all the supermarkets, co op etc and very cheap. I didnt know where they came from. they are delicious but like £1 for 6.

Divebar2021 · 14/09/2021 13:36

I love the retro packaging of Tunnocks. Do they make tins of anything ? A retro tin with goodies inside would help if you’re posting. Maybe put in a range of old fashioned Scottish sweets / treats.

Tal45 · 14/09/2021 13:36

Oh yes, but I'd be very happy if someone sent me some!

IglesiasPiggle · 14/09/2021 13:36

ShockShockShock I have read more offensive comments on here than I can count but this takes the whole biscuit tin.
