Have most English people had a tunnocks tea cake before?

Or is it quite an unusual thing to have? Looking to send a “Scottish” treat along with money to English relative (teenager) for birthday. Just a little token gift to go with the money.

I've never had one. I'd be very happy to receive one as a gift - I like to try new foods.

IglesiasPiggle · 14/09/2021 12:51

Can you get Caramel Logs elsewhere in the U.K? They're much better than the Caramel Wafers imo.

QuestionableMouse · 14/09/2021 12:51

@ShingleBeach

Send tablet or that powdery rock.
Ooh Edinburgh rock. Haven't had that in ages!

Edinburgh Rock is amazing, especially the ginger one.

Tunnocks Caramel logs weren’t on the shelves in London until v recently, abd I have only seem them once or twice.

Mydogisagentleman · 14/09/2021 12:53

Plain chocolate ones from our pound shop

girlmom21 · 14/09/2021 12:54

They'd probably be my last meal request if I was on death row. Just a few boxes - don't need anything else.

Feel free to post them to me...

serielchanger · 14/09/2021 12:54

@SpamIAm

I'm welsh and my tunnocks lifetime count is probably in the thousands rather than the hundreds.
Me too!
woodfort · 14/09/2021 12:56

Yes. Had no idea they were Scottish.

Vanuatu · 14/09/2021 12:57

One of our favourites in our Welsh home.

Mariell · 14/09/2021 12:59

I have never had one and wouldn’t try one as I don’t think they are suitable for vegetarians.

MissyB1 · 14/09/2021 13:00

I didn’t know they were Scottish either 🤔 I just think of them as “northern” . Anyway they are yummy!

KittenKong · 14/09/2021 13:01

All the supermarkets seem to sell them (M&S do their own version). What I can’t find often are snowballs (yum) or the large, flat scotch pancakes (to be buttered and rolled up).

Weren’t there dancing tea cakes at the commonwealth games when they were held in Glasgow?

idontlikealdi · 14/09/2021 13:03

We have them all the time.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/09/2021 13:04

Tunnocks products are certainly available in every supermarket at least as far south as Yorkshire.

Mackies crisps used to be my go to 'must buy when in Scotland' product, but they sell them in Aldi, and sometimes Lidl now.

Tablet would be good if they like sweet things though. That's limited to an occasional Aldi special in England as far I as know.

Hopefully they'll become more widely available soon. They're amazing, if rather messy.

Yummypancake · 14/09/2021 13:06

Thank you. My relatives are southern England, so may be not quite as popular as northern? But even so sounds like they may think an odd thing to send. I will maybe just go with tablet and Edinburgh rock. Suppose a small pack tea cakes would be well received anyway so could do a little mini hamper

Maybe it depends where you are? They have been available around here for ever...
Yummypancake · 14/09/2021 13:06

Yes tunnocks caramel logs are amazing! So much better than wafers

A bottle of Buckie is harder to find in England, where its made, than in Scotland. Apparently 95% is "exported" over Hadrians Wall.

I've never seen them?

Grapesoda7 · 14/09/2021 13:14

I buy them every week with the shopping.
Tablet sounds good.
Not suitable for sending in the post, but the one thing I've never seen in England are those little pies that have a pastry base with baked beans and mashed potato piped on top.

I can confirm that Tunnocks come at least as far south as Birmingham Smile
MiddleParking · 14/09/2021 13:14

Yes, but who wouldn’t appreciate getting some as a gift anyway?!

Chubbyguts · 14/09/2021 13:14

I'm in Australia, and can buy Tunnocks Tea Cakes here ! They're not common and most who had lived or travelled to the UK wouldn't know about them. But they're in some shops, sadly often stale.
