Which food trends are you tired of?

Sriracha on everything. Enough already.

I don't understand this trend for putting biscuits on cakes, in brownies and in chocolate. I could understand it a bit more if it's incorporated into the brownie but often it's just stuck on top.

Burgers that require you to dislocate your jaw in the manner of a python, in order to eat them. I don't have a delicate appetite. I like a good sized burger but some are so ridiculously huge and have so many toppings that you practically need a forklift to get it to your mouth.

What food trends don't you understand?

@Dashdotcom

Stuff being served on boards/slates at restaurants, poor waiting staff have to do that awkward push and slide across the table to try and pick it up.

JUST USE A PLATE.

Exactly this, with the addition of chips being put in stupid little mini chip pan baskets or buckets.
JudgeJudyRocks · 14/09/2021 12:21

Cup cakes should have icing in the middle and on top. Otherwise mouthful one is okay with some sponge and some icing. Mouthful two is just dry sponge. Why?

jontyl · 14/09/2021 14:58

Stuff that you need a knife and fork to eat being served in a bowl. Just awkward.

shinynewapple21 · 14/09/2021 16:10

@DreamTheMoors where is that place ShockShockShock ? Who would want to eat food off a shovel? Is it a joke ?

Henio · 14/09/2021 17:09

@Seeline

Vegan stuff everywhere which has overtaken the actual medical needs of things like gluten free food. Just because my DD is not able to eat gluten, she cannot now eat dairy, meat etc as restaurants seem to think just serving food free from anything is OK.
Exactly what I was going to say, vegan options in some places have replaced gluten free completely
ClumpingBambooIsALie · 14/09/2021 17:28

It's because the gluten-free options were never there for the medically-mandated gluten-dodgers, of whom there are such a small number it's just not worth the faff of catering for us. It was for the people who hop onto the latest fad, who have now largely moved on from avoiding gluten to things like "plant-based" eating. Fads are a double-edged sword for those who follow the diet, or a similar one, for other reasons.

I'm sick of reading how everything is " locally sourced " makes me cringe

justasking111 · 14/09/2021 18:15

Manager of a restaurant was grilled by a customer enquiring about a booking for the bottomless brunches. Could they guarantee it was gluten-free and vegan, well no because the alcohol might not be. OH I'm not worried about that said the customer 😂😂😂

MeredithGreyishblue · 14/09/2021 19:16

Kefir yoghurt. It tastes awful and I love yoghurt!

Describing any food as "plant based" in its advertising puts me off. If you can't call it what it is I'm not eating it.

Soya in everything. The jury is actually out on whether soy increases or modulates oestrogen, and excess oestrogen is linked to a myriad of things.

PeacheyPeach · 14/09/2021 20:49

I'm kinda over pretentious names for coffee!. It's almost seen as inferior if you just want a cup of coffee or a cappuccino. It's got to have a fancy title 😃

Zipperdidoodaa · 15/09/2021 00:30

@Shelddd
"The funny thing is vegetables are carbs! :) "
Yes starchy veg contain carbs but there's minimal amounts in courgette and cauliflower which is why they're used in a keto or low carb diet. They're not going to fill you up unless you eat a ton of them and in my mind they're no replacement for either pasta or rice.

I don’t know, @shinynewapple21 — I saw an article once about all the absolutely ridiculous items that “fashion forward” restaurants serve their meals in/on and that shovel stuck with me.
Other highlights included a salad in a mason jar that included romaine leaves just stuck in it and seating in a restaurant that was, I believe, bicycle seats or something equally as uncomfortable.
It was all BONKERS!
I got the photo from Google & if I remember correctly, the list was on BuzzFeed.

Here’s an article - not from BuzzFeed but it’ll give you an idea.

My fave cake shop puts stuff in the middle like jam or Nutella in cupcakes She made an apple crumble one with cinnamon once and oh my god.. I bit into it and the middle was apple and custard
MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 15/09/2021 07:20

Is 'cappuccino' NOT fancy?

janj2301 · 15/09/2021 09:38

black decaff Americano, get some wierd looks nowadays

ladybrunton · 15/09/2021 09:56

Those great big fat chips where they artfully arrange about 4 chips on a plate like a giant Jenga. Thankfully they seem to be disappearing but I was served some the other day. Just serve normal chips!

BecauseIcan1985 · 15/09/2021 13:06

I'm absolutely fed up of seeing mixed grills why not just cut out the middle man and go to abattoir like a normal meat-eatier

Also the fact that gluten free people complain about vegan diet as fad when people are actually allergic to dairy and animal protein aswell as gluten be nice to see a menu with gluten free vegan that not just a piece of lettuce or chilli con carne.

I mean after all beans are designed for vegan as food now has status I guess I would like to see a mixture of choices insted of a mix grill. That fad is ridiculous and to think people are programme's to accept it as food 😆 🤣

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 15/09/2021 13:09

Smashed avo on toast
Brioche buns
Coffee in throwaway branded cups

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 15/09/2021 13:09

@BlancheB

Fake over processed vegan junk food
And this!
Talkwhilstyouwalk · 15/09/2021 13:12

Drinks in jam jars....

the fact that gluten free people complain about vegan diet as fad when people are actually allergic to dairy and animal protein aswell as gluten

The current trend for veganism is a fad, and one which doesn't necessarily help those with medical issues, as I illustrated in my post showing the vegan "may contain milk" pizza in the freefrom freezer. Putting a vegan but potentially milk-containing product in the freefrom freezer runs the risk of people assuming it's there because it's milk-free (cause it isn't wheatfree, so why else would it be there?)

The fashion for gluten-free diets for those with no medical need to avoid gluten was also a fad, and alongside an increased availability of gluten-free foods (welcome) resulted in problems having cross-contamination in particular and gluten-free diets in general taken seriously (unwelcome). When most people asking for gluten-free food won't get ill from cross-contamination, the need to avoid it isn't taken as seriously.

It would be great if more of us could eat fewer/no animal products, and long-term that's probably the only sustainable option for us as a species. But this very sudden uptick in availability of processed "plant-based" products is very much a fad, and its fad-motivated adherents will probably drift off to something else in due course, leaving behind a few extra vegans, the way they drifted away from the gluten-free fad leaving behind a few extra long-term GF eaters to look at their once artificially boosted, now denuded GF food sections.
