Which food trends are you tired of?

Sriracha on everything. Enough already.

I don't understand this trend for putting biscuits on cakes, in brownies and in chocolate. I could understand it a bit more if it's incorporated into the brownie but often it's just stuck on top.

Burgers that require you to dislocate your jaw in the manner of a python, in order to eat them. I don't have a delicate appetite. I like a good sized burger but some are so ridiculously huge and have so many toppings that you practically need a forklift to get it to your mouth.

What food trends don't you understand?

Cupcakes. Aaargh, all that vile sugar on top of a giant fairy cake. Let them stay in the USA where they don't care about heart attacks.

You don't have to eat them you know, just leave them to those of us who enjoy them.

We all have foods we don't like and there is nothing wrong with mentioning it. I don't like salted caramel - all I want is for there to be other choices, I don't think it should be banned as I know others like it - and I really don't need to come onto MN with a judgy attitude like the one above! (Incidentally, since when did the UK become the poster child for healthy living?)

Jourdain11 · 13/09/2021 23:48

Yeah, this now seems to be going down the "carbs are the devil's handiwork, let's live on a pure diet of kale and almond milk" route.

Incidentally - almond milk - blehhhh! I once got an almond milk caffe latte out of curiosity and it was so bitter and vile!

@msgreen

Anything we imported from the usa ,Mac donalds etc etc starbucks, all full of sugar and processed rubbish we are all being sold down the obesity river . lets just all eat real food
What a gloriously simple life you must lead @msgreen, untroubled with sugary punctuation, processed rubbish from Starbucks and Big Macs floating down the obesity river of the USA etc etc.
AdaColeman · 13/09/2021 23:57

Chorizo in absolutely everything has gone too far.

In with delicately flavoured prawn and scallops, in risotto, on pizza, in soup, in sausage rolls….

ellyeth · 13/09/2021 23:57

I think it's going out of fashion now, but pomegranate. How does it add anything worthwhile to a dish?

Food served on boards. Apart from being awkward, I'm not sure it's very hygienic.

limitedperiodonly · 14/09/2021 00:09

Crisps made from any vegetable that isn't potato.

They look like scabs. The greasy seborrheic ones.

Zipperdidoodaa · 14/09/2021 00:17

Vegetables masquerading as carbs, as in cauliflower rice, courgetti etc. Who are they trying to kid! There's no substance to them, they don't fill you up, are watery and just pointless in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love veg and it's healthy but I would rather have it in its natural form than trying to make it look like it's a carb that's going to fill me up but just leaves me starving and raiding the fridge 30mins later

Haudyourwheesht · 14/09/2021 00:34

@Seeline

Vegan stuff everywhere which has overtaken the actual medical needs of things like gluten free food. Just because my DD is not able to eat gluten, she cannot now eat dairy, meat etc as restaurants seem to think just serving food free from anything is OK.

@Seeline I was just about to post this. You can barely get a gf pizza with choose any more, and gf desserts are almost always completely dairy free.

The funny thing is vegetables are carbs! :)

@Devonchills

'plant based'

Not the food, just the term is totally overused.
Like Flora for instance, always sunflower oil, now marketed at plant based.
Everywhere I look it's plant based this, and plant based that.

Especially since it's always used in heavily processed, incredibly bad for you foods, but the marketing is pretending it's healthy because it's "plant based"
ClumpingBambooIsALie · 14/09/2021 00:43

I used to be able to mentally relax a bit in the Free From section. Not any more. Nestled among the gluten-free pizzas, gluten- and dairy-free pizzas, and gluten- and lactose-free pizzas, behold: the monstrosity that is the Goodfellas Vegan Falafel pizza. Wheat base, may contain milk, has fucking falafel on it for some reason. Some poor bugger's going to be fed that by a well-meaning relative, and only start to suspect that they're about to feel very unwell when they realise it tastes the wrong kind of disappointing.

If you're going to put a vegan thing in the freefrom section, at least bloody make sure it's dairy free FFS.

It wouldn't even be so bad if vegan food hadn't already squeezed the freefrom section down to a single cabinet and a couple of sections of gluten-free stuff, with the odd thing that also happens to be dairy free or lactose free. I know gluten-free, dairy-free and lactose-free as fads are dying down now, though, so those of us who have to avoid those things are lucky to keep any of the concessions, I suppose.

Sorry, "plant-based" 🙄

WatchMyChops · 14/09/2021 01:39

Some of these trends have been around for many years. I remember often having bubble tea at uni and I graduated in 2012🧋I also remember deconstructed this or that in Masterchef for severe years etc.

And I also remember when blog posts were a thing, before the birth of YouTube, paleo recipes.

Aside from not being served in plates, which I remember was a thing that Jamie Oliver started doing a while back, I can’t be too fussed with the so-called trends.

Also avo toast is quite commonplace in Australia. One of my favourite things to have
for brunch, on a calm weekend, is smashed avocado with sourdough bread with poached eggs and smoked salmon with a squeeze of lemon. Accompanied with a leafy salad. I had this about 15 years ago at a quiet café in London and I’ve recreated it at home ever since.

Sleepyquest

I am with you on this ! Leon breakfast its all with Halloumi and everywhere else. Salted Caramel so it’s sugary and its also upping my salt intake and it just never did float my boat again it’s in most treats now so doesn’t feel a treat . My cynical self says it’s because these are cheaper ways for the food manufacturer to make something seen luxury just by adding salt into the sugary mix. Hummus I keep getting on trains and smelling people’s food item usually hummus puts me off and sushi which I never thought would happen. I am over the sugar shaped cubes of white rice. I think it’s because it’s not really that healthy because if all the sugar and isn’t as fresh tasting.

Darlingx · 14/09/2021 04:52

Plantbased
That is so far removed from the plant. I think it’s good that Vegans have more options then cooking from scratch and I know meatfree is better for the planet but heavily processed food that a long way down the process may have been extracted from a plant is not a healthier option and possibly tastes like cardboard because it’s so processed 😬 supermarkets love this trend because it’s cheap food with too much fat and salt long shelf life yet they plug it as being plant based and the healthy option with emblems of a fresh green leaf. I worry for some they might think it is actually the healthy option rather things with actual green leaves on them.

miltonj · 14/09/2021 06:32

I just hope pubs go back to bottles of ketchup/Mayo etc soon. Think they were all replaced with sachets because of restrictions. I need about 6 of them and they're so annoying to open.

SquirryTheSquirrel · 14/09/2021 07:52

I find the term 'plant based' really off-putting. For some reason I think of the food coming from an enormous cactus!

I'm an omnivore so I don't mind whether food happens to be vegan/vegetarian but 'plant based' makes me feel queasy.

sueelleker · 14/09/2021 08:08

You mean like breakfast served on a shovel? 🙄
Did anyone else just visualise someone catching the handle, and the whole lot flying across the room?

frumpety · 14/09/2021 08:41

I am usually very disappointed with 'Artisan' bakeries, bought a sourdough loaf from one on holiday and it was burnt in places and eyewateringly expensive, ended up hacking off the burnt bits and making bread salad with it. I prefer the denser european bread but nobody round here does it.

Love avocado's , tried Kale and wasn't keen.

Not a fan of brioche anything, especially not round a burger.

Those donut's in a muffin shape, can't remember what they are called ? not a fan, donuts should be little, hot and just have a sprinkle of sugar on them, Fair donuts we call them.

StarlightLady · 14/09/2021 08:57

My issues surround things the food is served in.

  • Chips served in a stupid metal baskets.
  • Food served on wooden boards or slates. Are they hygienic?
  • Food served in what looks like dog bowls.

I could not agree more. Frankenstein food.

Not to mention an environmental disaster. Covid has hugely increased waste in the food service industry

God, I love those. Haven't seen them anywhere for a good few years; used to have them at a now-defunct country show.
