She'd piled all her hair up on her head in an amazingly tall Marge Simpson do. I was both completely mesmerised and internally sniggering at the same time.

Then I remembered I used to actually go out wearing plumbers overalls, accessorised with a cheap red, wide plastic belt.
Tied red bandana round hair like Bananarama/Dexys/Hilda Ogden
Wore long dangly chain earrings with red balls on the end the size of a grape
Red canvas shoes
Pink and red eyeshadow
Blue lipstick

Essex 1980s.

I also had a red bandana, I liked to top off my look with big hoop earrings , blue eyeshadow and a brown "edgy" lipstick.
Double denim was another one. Soooo glad my teenage years are behind me Grin

AChickenCalledDaal · 11/09/2021 20:47

1980s. Just so much hair.

Sparklingbrook · 11/09/2021 20:48

Electric blue mascara
Jumpsuits that were impossible to go to the loo in
Jeans with flowers all over them
Pixie boots

Birmingham suburbs 1980s.

I was looking at a window display in Urban outfitters a few months ago that was styled on Kevin and Perry from Harry Enfield. I was imagining my teen buying it and my reaction.

I used to wear lace gloves, alternating neon nail varnish and lots of massive cross necklaces. In fact I can watch the Wedding Singer film and convince myself I rocked the Madonna look 🤣

NotReallyAPrincess · 11/09/2021 20:48

I laugh at high-waisted jeans on teenagers but that’s because when I was 16–17, the “waistless” style was in. Just a zip, no button & frayed waistband, most of your abdomen exposed. Always bootcut or flared. I had a pair with diamanté detail on the legs, and I also unpicked one of the rear pockets to customise. What a state.

Kind of glad I’m flabby now so I’ll never be tempted to buy a new pair when the inevitable revival comes along…

RareritySparkles · 11/09/2021 20:49

I had hoop earrings which would have fallen off my wrists they was mashoosive

TottieMarchpane · 11/09/2021 20:50

Denim dungarees with one strap undone. Christ knows why, but everyone was doing it!

celticecho · 11/09/2021 20:52

I went goth at 13. I'm 44 now and still rock the goth look!
I'm one of those weird people who never outgrew their teenage style!!

Titsywoo · 11/09/2021 20:54

For me the worst fashion years were 11-13. Levi blue denim shirt (not fitted) tucked into blue 501 jeans and bagged over. Paisley cullottes with lilac blouse and lilac hairband (plus very frizzy curly hair). Purple, pink and black shellsuit. Dark green leggings with white socks and black chunky platform shoes.

louderthan · 11/09/2021 20:54

I was a teenager in the midst of 90s grunge.
Patchwork, army surplus, DMs with everything, ripped tights, stripy tights, fishnet tights, lots of ripped/faded denim, tie-dye, baby doll dresses a la Courtney Love. Might possibly have gone out in a nightie once...

ImFree2doasiwant · 11/09/2021 20:55

Jeans that were cut up the outside by an inch or 2. I don't know why.

Very low rise jeans, the zip would be about 2 inches long.

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 11/09/2021 20:57

I had one of those triple-colour eyeshadow palettes where you swipe the brush across it once and you get three shades stacked vertically from lashes to eyebrows. In charmingly unsubtle shades of blue!

NerrSnerr · 11/09/2021 21:03

In the late 90s I modelled myself on Hannah from S club 7 and used to wear outfits like this (which isn't hugely dissimilar to what I have seen some teens wear recently).

I also used to wear really long, baggy jeans that were all torn at the bottom and if it rained they got wet up the the knees.

Dying my hair black, combined with alternative taste in clothes. I fancied I looked like Marilyn Manson. Being naturally fair, and at the time incredibly thin and tall, I looked like the anaemic love child of a daddy long legs and Flay from Gormenghast.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 11/09/2021 21:07

Cerise pink silk shirt with lace gloves Blush Followed by my grunge phase of army boots and military jacket! Also had a permanent despite having naturally curly hair Grin

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 11/09/2021 21:07

I had a white puffball dress that appeared to have been flicked with black paint. It was teamed with a black bolero jacket and white sheer tights with small zig zags on them. It was 1987, I was 12 and thought I looked the business, I remember feeling so grown up in my Tammy Girl outfit!!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 11/09/2021 21:08

A perm that should read!

littlebilliie · 11/09/2021 21:10

Cut my hair to lady Diana style and it was so short it was like my brother 🙄

Littleants · 11/09/2021 21:12

Shredded jeans, army boots two sizes too big, deliberately laddered tights. My poor old Mum!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 11/09/2021 21:13

I snigger at cropped trousers and high waisted trousers/jeans as when I was a teen in the 90's these were what OAP's wore.

I was a goth/raver and had some really wild outfits, lots of patchwork and safety pins, baggy neon pink parachute trousers covered in tassels etc.

StillSmallVoice · 11/09/2021 21:15

I was very uncool and made all my own clothes as a teenager (70s). It was the only way I was likely to get new clothes, though to be fair to my parents, they were pretty free with the fabric purchases.

I spent my teenage years feeling uncool and homemade, but if I look at photos from then I don't see anything embarrassing at all.

DD on the other hand (early noughties) hot pink, very baggy trousers festooned with matching pink streamers. Never did get a photo. She remembers and is glad there was no photo.

HemanOrSheRa · 11/09/2021 21:15

Ha! My DS has just started college and we were discussing different styles of clothing/hair etc that he sees there. I told him that when I was at college in the late 80's I had a flat top haircut but with a super long fringe which I back combed so it looked like a cockatiel crest Grin. We didn't get onto talking about the clothes I wore because he was so shocked and was suffering The Cringe on behalf of his middle aged mother Grin.

FuckPilledLatteplus · 11/09/2021 21:16

I stuck pink chopsticks in my hair

ZenNudist · 11/09/2021 21:16

I never had a lot of style.

Aged 13 in a purple "shell suit" with triple laced LA Gear trainers. Thought I was the bomb.

Similar aged: I discovered tammy girl. My face outfit was a silver and black waistcoat with built in silk sleeved shirt and built in necklace. Teamed with purple jeans.

Aged 26 I wore a lot of brown. Brown Boho skirt, brown slouched boots big brown bag, brown tight cami (I could wear that then) very low cleavage covered in gold Boho embroidery, some kind if hideous "statement jacket" from guess in brown and tweed with lots of rough edges like it hadn't been properly finished, I remember I had Boho jewellery to finish off the ensemble. I clearly thought this was a good look. It wasn't.

I stand by the 90s/ early 00s fashion. If you hadn't been out in a nightie you weren't there. Mine was a velvet leopard print purple slip dress style with bog all to it. Wore it with silver wedge mules, silver eyeshadow, purple hair "mascara" lipgloss that your hair stuck to, and accessorised with body glitter and face shimmer. We didn't know about microplastics then. See also all the other barely there dresses we wore then. My fave was white see through maxi dress with matching hot pants! It had my nipples though!

pecanmix · 11/09/2021 21:17

I have no idea why but I wore bright yellow combats, bright yellow platform trainers, a bright yellow playboy T-shirt (shoot me now) and to top it off, bright yellow shag bands and yellow sunglasses.

I think the shag bands may show my age. Ffs pecan you absolute dick head
