She'd piled all her hair up on her head in an amazingly tall Marge Simpson do. I was both completely mesmerised and internally sniggering at the same time.

Then I remembered I used to actually go out wearing plumbers overalls, accessorised with a cheap red, wide plastic belt.
Tied red bandana round hair like Bananarama/Dexys/Hilda Ogden
Wore long dangly chain earrings with red balls on the end the size of a grape
Red canvas shoes
Pink and red eyeshadow
Blue lipstick

Essex 1980s.

Zen shag bands were plastic / rubber bracelets. I had loads and would pick colours to compliment my outfits 😂

Does anyone remember popper jogging bottoms? I had a variety of colours, worn with colour coordinated strappy tops, bright blue & orange trainers, unsubtle purple eyeshadow, blue mascara, permed hair that had twisted pieces clipped back in little plastic butterfly clips and a round fringe Blush

By the time I reached pub age (ish - 17 maybe), it was all tight dark denim river island jeans, huge belts, stupidly high boots and a 'nice top' that was usually see through. Lots of body glitter, silver / glitter eyeshadow and lip gloss and huge earrings 🙄

I also had a favourite clubbing outfit that was sparkly sandals, black trousers that were split to the thigh on the outside of each leg, with a small metal bar at the top which mostly stopped me flashing my knickers, a pink see through halter neck top and luminous yellow hoop earrings.
I would flick my purple hair out and my nails were always painted black.

I love looking back on it, it's just youngsters having a good time.

OnlyTheLangOfTheTitberg · 11/09/2021 21:53

80s: double denim. I had a blouson stonewashed jacket onto which I sewed a variety of fabric patches. With my shoulder length poodle perm and pink & white batwing sweater I looked a delight Grin

Early 90s: black velvet leggings, oversized man’s shirt untucked, brocade waistcoat and spike heel boots. I looked like a cross between Max Wall and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark 🤣🤣

My first teenager DD1 was in the cohort who wore their jeans about four inches too long. So they literally trailed on the floor. They could hardly walk for staggering and tripping over their filthy, frayed hems every step.

Next teenager DD2 (10 years later) was in the Time of the Undone Shoelaces. All trainers and any shoes with laces had to be left not just untied but loose and trailing on the floor to either side. Yes, they were tripping up all the time too.

Mind you when I was a teenager (decades ago) I sewed a nightie at school in violent orange brushed nylon with black lace edging. I chose the material myself. And had a woolly poncho.

Maroon, crushed velvet ankle-length tube skirt and a baggy hand-knitted lime-green jumper. Looked its best with converse hi-tops with the laces removed, and a “Six from Blossom” baggy hat and sunflower. Plus half-hourly reapplications of Rimmel Black Cherry.

Hopefully things have improved since then.
@pecanmix what is a shag band?

That autocorrects to shame band!
These babies - in any colour you like!

Black velvet babydoll dress with a white skinny tee underneath it. Platform kickers. Hair down with just two very thin plaits down the front from a centre parting.

rjacksmiss · 11/09/2021 22:02

Low rise bootcut denim jeans, white pointed kitten heels, white cropped vest top. Belly button piercing. Stripy chunky hair highlights. What a ghoul.

MumofSpud · 11/09/2021 22:04

Another 90s grunge teen here - loved the alternative look - except we weren't alternative we all looked the same:
DMs
Para boots
Stripey or black tights
An old cardigan with loads of holes in tied round my waist
'Hippie' type dresses
Drenched in essential oils instead of perfume
Beads in hair (and a few matts)
Smile

StarryNight04 · 11/09/2021 22:06

Is anyone else getting amazing visuals from these descriptions?!

Maerchentante · 11/09/2021 22:08

Baggy sweatshirts, often with equally baggy T-Shirts underneath, tennis socks in my beloved Chucks.
I was not remotely fashionable as my clothes were never the right brand. My mum absolutely refused to buy me red Levi's as they cost a fortune.
Then came the Adidas tear-away trousers, which I could not afford, in hind sight - thank goodness for that.

Went to a football game a few weeks ago and in walked a few teenagers, I swear they could've come straight from 1996, including the "Nick-Carter-Tribute"-Hair on two of them.

IWillWashTheGreenWillow · 11/09/2021 22:13

@TottieMarchpane

Denim dungarees with one strap undone. Christ knows why, but everyone was doing it!
My 16 year old Dd is wearing this now! And regularly clouting herself with the swinging undone buckle 🤷.

I am not allowed to laugh.

Bluntness100 · 11/09/2021 22:13

Not sure if anyone remembers the 80 S style but I had my Long hair cut short and retained a long very very thin little plait down the back.

CornishPastyDownUnder · 11/09/2021 22:15

my favourite was the yazz look,it was fun..bomber jacket super short stonewashe cutoffs &tights, dms or converse, bra top underneath..

PalacesOfMontezuma · 11/09/2021 22:15

Age 7.... my best friend and I had matching Kylie Minogue t-shirts and enormous pink spotty hair bows.

Age 9... massively oversized purple shell suit with LA Gear trainers with ribbons for laces.

Age 11... long red waistcoat with big gold buttons and a floppy velvet hat.

After that I went grunge/indie and that will never not be cool!

SocialPhobia21 · 11/09/2021 22:17

Mine was dying my hair bright red, blue mascara that I applied over and over again at any chance I got. Denim high heels, those string vests and a denim handbag. Silver trainers and matching blow up see through bubble bag for school. Popper kappa tracksuits and hi-tech trainers. Cutting my own fringe to hide the huge teenage spots on my forehead and having to wet/ gel the fringe every time I was near the toilets.
I burned all the photos thankfully no evidence for DC's to see.

@louderthan

I was a teenager in the midst of 90s grunge. Patchwork, army surplus, DMs with everything, ripped tights, stripy tights, fishnet tights, lots of ripped/faded denim, tie-dye, baby doll dresses a la Courtney Love. Might possibly have gone out in a nightie once...
I’m female but used to dress purposely like Kurt Cobain.... old baggy woollen jumpers, baggy jeans, hair never brushed.
Duckypoohs · 11/09/2021 22:19

I owned an A line, satin lime green skirt, and actually wore it. I think that was my worst sin, thank fuck it was the 90s.

SirChenjins · 11/09/2021 22:20

A wall of hair - permed and back combed
Pink hessian soled boots that got soaking in the rain (in Scotland that was about 85%of the time)
Pink and white striped trousers
Baggy shirts down to my knees
My dad’s old Mac that trailed down to my ankles
Mismatched big earrings
Black eyeliner, huge amount of blusher and pale frosted lipstick
Permanent scowl on my face
Black brimmed hat

The 80s of course.

I went out in a nightie... however it was slightly chilly so I also took the vintage paisley dressing gown too!
meow1989 · 11/09/2021 22:20

I'm a late 80s kid so teen years wereearly/mid 2000's.

I had my name and phone number on a metal pet tag that I wore on a necklace. That was probably the worst!

I used to wear a black belly dancer skirt (you know the short bits of fabric with little coin type things on?) And jingled everywhere I went. I actually still love the idea of this! Was less than perfect the first time (now) dh snuck me into his parents house one night

Used to wear ribbon around my wrist

Teeth jewels!

Chunky ginger highlights.

Never wearing a top that covered my kidneys.

trappistkepler · 11/09/2021 22:24

old man bracers for trousers on jeans

Dancingsmile · 11/09/2021 22:25

Thick white eyeliner . Big oh dear to that .

IWillWashTheGreenWillow · 11/09/2021 22:26

I went to uni in 1992. Patchwork skirt, velvet jacket, floppy crushed velvet hat with a squashed rose on the front that only really fitted if I stuffed all my hair into it and speared it with a hat pin, lace up victorian-style ankle boots. I felt so trendy. And looked just like everyone else!

ssd · 11/09/2021 22:28

Blue hair, blue lipstick, white face

LapinR0se · 11/09/2021 22:29

@Titsywoo

For me the worst fashion years were 11-13. Levi blue denim shirt (not fitted) tucked into blue 501 jeans and bagged over. Paisley cullottes with lilac blouse and lilac hairband (plus very frizzy curly hair). Purple, pink and black shellsuit. Dark green leggings with white socks and black chunky platform shoes.
We you Irish @Titsywoo??
