She'd piled all her hair up on her head in an amazingly tall Marge Simpson do. I was both completely mesmerised and internally sniggering at the same time.

Then I remembered I used to actually go out wearing plumbers overalls, accessorised with a cheap red, wide plastic belt.
Tied red bandana round hair like Bananarama/Dexys/Hilda Ogden
Wore long dangly chain earrings with red balls on the end the size of a grape
Red canvas shoes
Pink and red eyeshadow
Blue lipstick

Essex 1980s.

I had dark red ankle boots and woollen leg warmers, multi colour that went above the knee and my best friend was matching.

Another time my Mum bought me some yello pyjamas and insisted I wore them in the day but my friend pointed out they said sleep tight goodnight on them as I walked around town.

whynotwhatknot · 11/09/2021 22:36

forgot about my tight flares bellbottoms 90s though not 70s

Notmybloodymonkeys · 11/09/2021 22:41

@2bazookas

This was in the 1960's. My pals and I all bought white mens string vests in the market, lined them with a bright plain colour to show through the holes and wore them as (very) mini dresses.. We thought we were the bees knees.

]]

I cringe.

This has just reminded me of a luminous pink string vest I had which I used to wear over a white t-shirt teamed with bright yellow leggings, a cerise mini skirt with a low slung wide white belt and lace fingerless gloves. This was my bargain basement Madonna look in sixth form in the mid-80s. My mum and dad must have pissed themselves laughing every time I left the house. Grin.

I encountered a teen today in a Peaky Blinders-esque flat cap ... and was reminded of my own brief flat-cap wearing phase - brief because it was stolen while I was wearing it by some lads - they probably did me a favourGrin

Echobelly · 11/09/2021 22:48

LOL, 13-y.o. oldest was asking me about my teen disasters just today, seeing as they are preparing to make their own mistakes and they know it!

I actually stand by my choices, although I think a pair of patchwork stripy fabric trousers with elasticate waist that I bought at the Reading Festival was not a winning look - in the end I didn't wear them much as I knew they looked a bit rubbish. But it may help that there's no photographic proof of any of it

ohfook · 11/09/2021 23:43

I was obsessed with Danni Minogue's character Emma in home and away and based most of my style decisions on how close they would get me to achieving her look.

Too much glitter eye shadow, poodle perm should pads sometimes two. Blue eyeliner and mascara. 80s

As a teenager, dad shirts, wide bell bottoms, covered in heart and star shaped studs. 70s

Gingernaut · 12/09/2021 00:29

Vertical, black and white striped, shirt dress, with yellow tights and accessories and an insane perm that went up, out and sideways.

1980s London

OrlandointheWilderness · 12/09/2021 00:46

My worst was a silver puffa jacket. I wasn't small. My dad made remarks about tinfoil every time it came out.

Velveteen16 · 12/09/2021 01:18

Pin stripe stretch jeans

Downunderduchess · 12/09/2021 01:32

Perms.

Susannahmoody · 12/09/2021 01:39

My new mobile hairdresser is very trendy and was wearing wide legged frayed faded ankle grazer jeans and doc martens. Also had the bit under he nose pierced.

16 in the Hottest Summer Ever in the 70s, I was 16 and wore a blue gingham smock dress with genuine smocking on chest, I was a 'big' girl so looked like a giant baby , no make up , rosy complexion and page boy haircut.

torquewench · 12/09/2021 04:19

In the early 90s I practically lived in a pair of black leather jeans, usually accessorised with 8 hole DMs and various grotty black jumpers, or a black vest top if it was summer. There was no way of cleaning those (unlined) trousers 🤢. I went everywhere in them. I've given myself an imaginary nostalgic whiff of patchouli, beer and sweat just thinking about them. I absolutely loved them. They literally fell apart in the end 😔

Yellowcrockpot · 12/09/2021 04:30

Got called a "piglet" by my family (still not sure what that means?!)

White skin tight flared trousers, trainers or high heels, very inappropriate tight white top, with my stupidly big boots on a small frame on show, over sized hoodie - something daft like NY Yankees (no idea at the time who they were) and matching visor, with gold over sized earrings, chains and matching rings.

....to hang around the local shopping center looking for boys... taking photos in the passport booths and trying on/stealing the testing eyeshadows/lipsticks.

So much cringe.

Yellowcrockpot · 12/09/2021 04:30

*stupidly big BOOBS

Yellowcrockpot · 12/09/2021 04:31

Also must add, these days I think most teenagers look so much more sophisticated. Most dress and do make up better than I could ever and I'm now in my mid 30s...

Kwackerly · 12/09/2021 04:38

Men's red silk boxer shorts worn over black tights with black travel fox trainers, with black popper crotch vest top.

Lurid purple zipper crop top with black velvet hotpants and opaque tights, and platform trainers. Sometimes just a wonderbra and hotpants and trainers!

I had a white bodystocking I'd painted all over with neon swirly colours and white fingerless gloves and a bloody whistle - thought I looked amazing. Used to use those opticians eyedrops to make my eyes glow in the UV club lights, sure that was a winning look.

For more casual wear, combats from army surplus with fitted t-shirts or vests and strappy dresses with t-shirts - in winter I wore black jodhpurs with a black rollneck and huge cream cable knit jumper down to my knees. I am 5ft.

Knee high suede platform boots with tiny mini dresses, or nighties or baby doll dresses covered in sequins.

Denim jacket and tiny backpack over everything.

Loving all these descriptions, more, more!

Is that the latest trend in jeans? I noticed a woman wearing them the other day when it was hot and I thought she looked very cool in both senses of the word. Being a child of the 70s I have never known what is wrong with flares, wide or bootcut jeans/trousers although i remember when drainpipes (skiiny) jeans came in. But not on my fat legs.
sashh · 12/09/2021 05:19

Denim dungarees with one strap undone. Christ knows why, but everyone was doing it!

Wasn't that a Dexys thing?

Not sure if anyone remembers the 80 S style but I had my Long hair cut short and retained a long very very thin little plait down the back.

A rat's tail, they were banned at my school so we had to keep an eye out for the girls' with them to keep them hidden.

Youarestillintherunning · 12/09/2021 05:32

White eyeshadow, blue eyeliner, one of those gold clown necklaces 🤢 and a knock off bright pink Nike Air tracksuit that I got off the market because I couldn't afford a real one. So thankful that it was at a time where social media was only just being used, so there's barely any photographic evidence 😂

Needsomethingtoread · 12/09/2021 06:49

Hot pants, orange and black furry boots and a tigger backpack.

Anything that flashed or glowed in the dark. Fishing ties in hair and glow sticks.

I then moved onto the more sophisticated style of really low cut jeans with a sarong round the waist and a green bikini top. Classy

Marmelace · 12/09/2021 07:41

Late 80s, blue hair, chain from nose to ear, dms, fishnets, silver and black fairy dress with lots of web like lace. Still wear big boots.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 12/09/2021 07:41

I wore messy half undone ties with every top, ripped fishnets and stud braclets, and an obscene amount of black eye make up because I thought it would make me look like Avril Lavigne. It did not. I was also obsessed with rainbow clothes and spent most winters drowning in rainbow knitware from the fair trade shop in the local market. I cringe at my past self but I'm not sure I can honestly say my sense of fashion has improved. Its a running joke in my family that it's almost impossible to tell my day clothes apart from my pyjamas.
