I mean it's obviously breadcake but I've heard some people disagree?

freezingmytoesoff · 03/09/2021 17:09

It's a roll

iklboo · 03/09/2021 17:19

Yep. I was scranning me chip barm an' a scallop in the ginnel when our kid said there was a bonny on the croft. I said that was bobbins & why did he have a chufty on. He went proper mard and skriked.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 03/09/2021 17:20

Barm. Nothing else.

DP calls everything a muffin despite us both being from Manchester. That can fuck off too.

I was eating my chip sandwich and fried potato fritter in the alley when my brother said there was a bonfire on the local common. I said that was rubbish and what was he so happy about. He got very sulky and cried.

Surprised at all the roll people. Doesn't that get confusing if you want to buy a sausage roll?

No because that's a Roll n Sausage silly 😜

Or a roll and square 😁

If you do online supermarket food shopping you will not find breadcake or barm as they are slang words. I don't know what they are, nor would the assistants in the local supermarkets.
Bread roll is widely used with bap also being used.

That's discrimination.

There should be Yorkshire language there as it's the largest county.

No, you ask for a sausage sandwich
dementedpixie · 04/09/2021 11:36

A sausage sandwich would be in bread not a roll

BarbaraofSeville · 04/09/2021 11:57

That's not the rule everywhere. Here (Yorkshire), if you go to a traditional greasy spoon or independent sandwich shop and ask for a sausage sandwich, you'll get sausages in a breadcake. They don't tend to do sliced bread sandwiches or call them sausage breadcakes/rolls/cobs/barms.

I did find this to my cost in Greggs in the West Midlands where I tried to buy a ham sandwich and they wouldn't let me have ham in a breadcake, that I could see behind the counter and was how they did them in Greggs in Yorkshire (years ago before they were everywhere and sandwiches were premade like in M&S or supermarkets) they wanted to sell me ham in sliced bread.

Yes because that's the way it is supposed to be
OhWhyNot · 04/09/2021 12:07

A bap is a soft roll and bigger has a dusting of flour (fact best chip butties are made with baps)

Rolls smaller can be soft or crusty (love a good crusty roll)

Breadcake never heard of this sounds nice

A Cob is a pony

Teaandscone · 04/09/2021 12:07

Dinner buns to my grandad! NB buns, not rolls!

cheesemarmitepanini · 04/09/2021 12:14

A Cob is a pony

Indeed

Cornettoninja · 04/09/2021 12:26

Cob, bap and roll are all acceptable to me (midlands).

There’s nothing confusing about a sausage roll, it is it’s own separate dish; a sausage wrapped in pastry and nothing to do with bread. we’d just specify ‘sausages in a roll/bap/cob’ in this house and a hot dog for a specific finger roll.

Soubriquet · 04/09/2021 12:27

It’s a breadroll

hugoagogo · 04/09/2021 12:34

That chip buttie poster upthread us misleading,
it suggests the baked items are all the same. Ime the different words are describing slightly different kind of bread rolls. A barm cake is large and flat so large they are sometimes sold by the half. A Cob is smaller and crustier (or a hazelnut!) A bap is soft and flattish and always dusted with flour. Oven bottomed muffins are similar, but no flour.
A bread roll to me anyhow describes the lot of them.
