Breadcake, cob or bap?

I mean it's obviously breadcake but I've heard some people disagree?

Roll. After a decade in this country I’ve learnt that a cob is when a Liverpudlian is unhappy.

Mrsjayy · 03/09/2021 10:33

Surprised at all the roll people. Doesn't that get confusing if you want to buy a sausage roll?

No because that's a Roll n Sausage silly 😜

GreenBeanMcGee · 03/09/2021 10:35

No. Because we, well in my area, ask for a roll and sausage.

GreenBeanMcGee · 03/09/2021 10:36

Which is very different to a sausage roll.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/09/2021 10:36

I'm always amazed that anyone manages to learn English at all.

A cob can be a small round piece of bread, a type of horse, or a sulking Liverpudlian.

We're a relatively small island and can't even agree on what to call a small round piece of bread.

And that's before we get to different pronounciations for words that look the same and similar pronounciations for words that look different. Although I did learn from the 'far more interesting and entertaining than it sounds' podcast about words and language Something Rhymes with Purple with Susie Dent and Giles Brandreth that this is due to words having different origins, eg France, German, Roman etc.

So do you also ask for a roll and ham, or a roll and cheese?
GreenBeanMcGee · 03/09/2021 10:37

Yes. A roll and ham or a roll with ham.

LizBennet · 03/09/2021 10:38

Sounds weird to me asking for the bread part first. You’d ask for a sausage muffin here, not a muffin and sausage (and definitely not a roll).

GreenBeanMcGee · 03/09/2021 10:39

I don't think there's ever been any confusion though. I'm in Glasgow btw.

GreenBeanMcGee · 03/09/2021 10:39

We have morning rolls here. The bread is the highlight.

mollycobbles · 03/09/2021 10:39

A roll or a bun for me (from Lincs) - although when I lived in Yorkshire a bun was a little cake and a bread bun was a tea cake Hmm!

ThePersonFromPorlock · 03/09/2021 10:40

It's a bap. Unless it's fecking ginormous. Then it's a Belfast bap. And you fill it full of Tayto cheese and onion (butter optional). Healthy snack hereabouts.

Mrsjayy · 03/09/2021 10:40

So do you also ask for a roll and ham, or a roll and cheese?

No we ask for ham or cheese rolls !

BarbaraofSeville · 03/09/2021 10:41

Shall we do fish cakes now?

I could go into any of the fish and chip shops round here and ask for a fish cake bread cake and it probably won't look like anything that most of you are expecting it to.

SittingontheSidelines · 03/09/2021 10:42

Ham roll
Cheese roll
Salad roll
Egg roll
Etc etc
Hot dog.

Bathshebahardy · 03/09/2021 10:42

I've never heard of breadcake so don't know what it is. I've heard of barm and think it is a northern? slang word for some kind of food but don't know what. My Lancashire DM used the word bap but it's not a word I hear other people use.
It sounds like you mean bread roll so why don't you just call it by its proper name?

GreenBeanMcGee · 03/09/2021 10:42

If you asked for a muffin and sausage here, you'd get a blueberry or chocolate muffin and a sausage. Though they'd have to ask if you wanted square or link.

I really want a roll and sausage now.

GreenBeanMcGee · 03/09/2021 10:43

Speaking of regional differences, never have I been so disappointed as I was when in Yorkshire and all the fish and chip shops were advertising scallops.

Who says bread roll is the proper name?

A barm is not the slang, it's the name. Most commonly filled with a pie and eaten.

NotMyCat · 03/09/2021 10:45

Barm

I'll let you have that one. I like both types of scallops, but realistically you're not getting the seafood kind from fish and chip shops for 30 pence each.
KatherineJaneway · 03/09/2021 10:47

Roll

GreenBeanMcGee · 03/09/2021 10:47

The price was a giveaway. I never actually ordered them but I kept getting excited when I saw them advertised, then remembered what they actually were. It's a cruel trick to play on tourists and their bad memories. The roast shops made up for it though.
