I texted my DH to tell him, he’s missed than road.
Did laugh at the picture of them cutting/holding white ribbon because someone in comments mentions it looked like toilet roll and now I can’t unseeBlush

Florelei · 22/10/2021 17:39

Hi, does anyone know when the children are going trick or treating? Is it actually Halloween night or some other day?

lifelongfrugaleer · 23/10/2021 14:39

Ours are going Sunday or on the day

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 23/10/2021 15:01

Only ever have trick or treating on actual Halloween in this village no matter what day it falls on.

Someaddedsugar · 24/10/2021 21:40

We’re trick or treating on Sunday. DS has asked to go and I have a slight suspicion we’ll be heading home pretty quickly as he’ll be frightened bless him!

The bridge reopening has made such a difference to the traffic in Durham which is a relief!

Hi, can I join? I used to be on the Durham chats many years ago, but they disappeared. I've got time to play on my phone again now my kids are getting bigger!

I'm in Darlington too.

PickAChew · 24/10/2021 23:43

Hi, @vikinglady. The more, the merrier!

TheSilveryPussycat · 25/10/2021 10:45

30 years ago it was turnip lanterns rather than pumpkins.

It is quite difficult to scoop out a turnip.

Timescale · 25/10/2021 11:07

Yep! We had turnips! My costume was a black bin bag and a turnip! 😂😂

MrsEWeatherwax · 25/10/2021 15:51

My costume was black bin bag too! And the scooped out turnip was not wasted. Was very hard work!
The smell of burning turnip is a smell never forgotten!
We will be sitting in dark on Halloween 👻 misery that I am. I never took my children out they never wanted to go. I won’t be answering doorBlush it’s normally the teenager’s away wanting money
Durham was really busy today, I know it’s half term but it was weird.

Someaddedsugar · 25/10/2021 21:53

Hi @VikingLady 👋🏻.

My DDad makes DS a turnip every year - always makes me smile.

We didn’t go trick or treating when I was younger. I can’t really remember ever wanting to either. I can only assume DS’ nursery friends that have older siblings have been talking about it with him as I haven’t mentioned it.

We never went t or t either.
The moon was good at the cathedral

Someaddedsugar · 26/10/2021 22:19

Has anyone seen the moon in the evening when it’s lit up?

I’ve had a hideous day at work topped off by an email that is a blatant telling off in a v passive aggressive way. I’d only asked a question but realised as soon as I pressed send that it would come back to bite me 🤦🏻‍♀️. And I know I’ll feel guilty until my boss comes back after half term... Eugh.

OP posts:
lifelongfrugaleer · 27/10/2021 09:28

Yes we saw it last night lit up. Very cool.
Those kind of emails are hard but a PA reply is not needed though

MrsEWeatherwax · 27/10/2021 20:19

I’m going to see moon again about 3.30pm in afternoon, because I think will be dark by then especially in Cathedral. I know won’t be lit up but needs must.
Hope you had a better day at work today Someaddedsugar. Did you manage to get Lumiere tickets?
If I had a small child I would go into Cathedral about 3 ish and stay in zoneBlush.
Went to Durham the other night and I keep forgetting to go and sit on the bright lit benches near the passport office.

Someaddedsugar · 27/10/2021 20:37

I agree @lifelongfrugaleer - it was one of those emails that says 'well I'd expect x, y, z to be happening but seeing as you're emailing me I'm guessing it isn't' when really it could have said thanks for actually thinking about this as clearly no one else has!

A much better day thanks @MrsEWeatherwax. And I'm actually going in to the office tomorrow for a few hours which will feel strange but exciting all at the same time!

I want to take DS to see the moon when it's lit up. We're going for lunch in Durham at the weekend so might try and hang around long enough for it to get darker but before the ticketed entry to the cathedral.

We got tickets to the Friday of Lumiere at the general sale that happened later in the week. I think we're going to use the Sniperly P&R and pick DS up before heading to Claypath.

I can't believe how warm it's been today despite the wind!

I notice Strictly had a moon like the cathedral does Glitterball

Is anyone else a Friend of the Cathedral? If so, do you get any info from them? I thought I'd be getting emails, nothing so far (though tbf I signed up not long before first lockdown).

MrsEWeatherwax · 01/11/2021 19:11

Yes, the moon reminded me of the cathedral.
As clocks have back I’m going for another view of the moon.

Someaddedsugar · 03/11/2021 21:04

We spotted the Strictly moon too! I’m so shocked that Dan didn’t end up in the dance off (sorry to any Dan W fans!). I didn’t think it was as Halloweeny this year either.

I know it’s such a silly thing to say but it gets dark so early doesn’t it! I had to go and pick up some click and collect orders from Dragonville this evening and it really shocked me just how dark it was at 6pm! I’m also not used to driving in the dark with working from home for so long.

I’ve had an email from nursery to tell us they’re closing north road at 2pm for the lumiere so looks like it’ll be park and ride for pick up on the Thursday and then we’re attending on the Friday straight after pick up.

OP posts:
MrsEWeatherwax · 04/11/2021 17:51

Good luck with Park and Ride if using Sniperley @Someaddedsugar.
We are going to use New College Park and Ride because is normally heaving.
I hate the dark nights. Hate driving in dark the glow of car lights hurt my eyesBlush
It also seems to have gone really cold too. Hat is now back on.

PickAChew · 04/11/2021 22:34

It was bitter, today. Didn't go further than our little sainsburys but did regret the lack of 'at.

Someaddedsugar · 06/11/2021 07:46

I think it's been really cold recently @PickAChew. Have you noticed much disruption with the changes to the buses? North Road seems quieter than usual on a night but hectic on a morning all of a sudden. On Thursday there was a lorry blocking access for the buses on the bit beyond Neville Street and then one bus company went into the back of another while trying to get past!

I can always tell when it's cold or very cold as our dog doesn't want to leave the house when it's very cold (don't blame him!).

Do you think Sniperley will be a nightmare @MrsEWeatherwax? I need to pick DS up before 4 on the Thursday and can't decide whether to chance and park near the Kings Lodge or Wharton Park, or just use the P&R and chance it as I'll be getting to it at 3.30ish to make sure I'm in and out before the crowds. On the Friday I'm not too fussed but will probably still need to get to the P&R for 3.30 as our tickets are for the 4.30 slot.

OP posts:
MrsEWeatherwax · 06/11/2021 08:36

@Someaddedsugar just make sure they haven’t suspended the on street parking you want to use. The signs will be up now.
Last time Sniperley was full before start. Good luck. If going before 3 o’clock you might get one of last spaces.
Might not be as busy due to covid.
I have given up on North Road! Feel sorry for the poor shopkeepers though.

MrsEWeatherwax · 06/11/2021 09:09

Forgot to say, if they haven’t suspended the parking I would use parking around Kings Lodge etc.

Someaddedsugar · 07/11/2021 19:45

Thanks for the tip @MrsEWeatherwax - I'll have a look at the Kings Lodge this week to see if there's any signage and hopefully that'll do for pick up on the Thursday.

Just watching the Fenwick's live stream of the window reveal and it's gone off!
