Does anyone still use a mug tree?

Reading a book and the narrator is describing a house as being dated and he mentions seeing a mug tree which made me think that I don’t think I’ve seen a house with a mug tree in it for years!!
We don’t have one, do you? Did you used to have one and now don’t?
I remember my mum having one when I was a kid, (late 80’s) but I’ve never had one since I had my own place. I don’t drink tea or coffee but dh does so we do own mugs, they just live in the cupboard on the shelf above small glasses!

Yes I have two in the space that I have washer dryer and freezer in. They are all totally impractical mugs that I was given as gifts etc I may also hang things like spare keys (on large hooks) etc on them.

Roselilly36 · 31/08/2021 19:53

Blast from the past, mug trees, I had forgotten about them. Never had one, but they were really popular.

TheChosenTwo · 31/08/2021 19:54

@garlictwist - a giant redwood perhaps?!
I’ve just gone back to my book and it’s still on the mug tree page. Clearly got so sidetracked by this Envy

We have Le Creuset mugs in rainbow colours- they’re far too pretty to put away in a cupboard, and the design of our kitchen means we have more worktop space than cupboards. So the mugs are on trees. Not 80s style pine ones though, sleek plain brushed metal.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 31/08/2021 20:25

I'm just about to get rid of my chrome mug tree in favour of a wall rack thingy with hooks I got from IKEA. Even a poxy mug tree takes up too much room.

DelurkingAJ · 31/08/2021 20:32

We have one. It was a requested present from my housemate for a birthday when I was a student. Well, I actually asked for ‘you know, one of those useful tree mugs…err…you know what I mean’ and she bought me two splendid mugs with trees on them and a mug tree. I always smile and think of her when we use it (many times a day usually). Mugs don’t have a chance to get dusty here!

CorianderBee · 31/08/2021 20:38

Sure I had one growing up 2000/2010s and know plenty of people who have them now.

CorianderBee · 31/08/2021 20:44

They even sell them at Urban Outfitters 😂

CorianderBee · 31/08/2021 20:49

@Shirleyphallus lol, I'd love to put all my kitchen stuff in cupboards but unfortunately some of us live in flats with 4 rooms in total so we don't all have the luxury I'm afraid.

TheChosenTwo · 31/08/2021 21:16

Oh well if urban outfitters are selling them they’re very ‘cool’ things to own indeed!
I shan’t be buying one but I’m quite surprised to hear so many people use them Smile
Thanks everyone for your mug tree input!

I lived in flats for years, my last flat had 3 rooms (bedroom, kitchen / diner and bathroom) and I STILL managed to have my rat away!

Shirleyphallus · 31/08/2021 21:20

That’s meant to say tat. Taken on a bit of an unsavoury meaning now 🤦🏼‍♀️

FoodIsOnMyMind · 31/08/2021 21:22

We did until we moved 2 years ago. But I got a stupid modern one with staright 'arms' and the damn things fell off if even touched by another mug that bugger went as soon as we packed. Also don't have the worktop space now.

theliverpoolone · 31/08/2021 22:29

I've got a mug tree. It never occurred to me it might be outdated Blush

OhGiveUp · 31/08/2021 22:36

I don't have a mug tree, but I do have mugs that stack inside each other inside a metal stand.

OhGiveUp · 31/08/2021 22:42

@SuperCaliFragalistic I don't have a veg basket, but I have a three tier veg rack on wheels, although the top tier is used as my dogs feeding station and the other two tiers for shopping bags.
I use my grandmother's ancient earthenware baking bowl for the veg......which is in a cupboard.

Rainbowsew · 31/08/2021 22:47

I do, always have had I'm only mid 40s

caringcarer · 31/08/2021 22:52

I have mug tree, matching yea, coffee and sugar tins and a butter dish. Clearly I live on the past

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/08/2021 23:16

We’ve got two! One sturdier one for the heavier mugs, a thinner one for the more delicate ones. If I had a bigger kitchen with more cupboard space I wouldn’t need them, but the cupboards are stuffed as it is.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/08/2021 23:17

Should have added, and I don’t care how old fashioned they may be.

squirrelslikenuts · 01/09/2021 00:00

What a fab thread!
Proud owner of a pine mug tree.

Just bought one about 4yrs ago, when I ran out of space in the cupboard, as I was placing them on top of each other. Less cracks as a result.

I have a mug tree, it lives on my kitchen window sill behind the sink and is very well used. Favourite mugs live on it.

It was made by my late FIL and holds 9 mugs instead of the usual 6. I used to covet it in my in-laws kitchen and eventually inherited it! I may have to leave it to one of my DDs, I think it's an heirloom now!

Giggorata · 01/09/2021 07:45

@Bellagonna

If you see someone who has a mug tree that hasn't fallen over it's a sure sign she's a witch.
I have a cast iron mug rack, which never falls over, and I am a witch. 🙂 I also have butter dishes, one on and one in the wash. No toast rack, but I'll raise you a teapot with milk jug and sugar basin.
