Does anyone still use a mug tree?

Reading a book and the narrator is describing a house as being dated and he mentions seeing a mug tree which made me think that I don’t think I’ve seen a house with a mug tree in it for years!!
We don’t have one, do you? Did you used to have one and now don’t?
I remember my mum having one when I was a kid, (late 80’s) but I’ve never had one since I had my own place. I don’t drink tea or coffee but dh does so we do own mugs, they just live in the cupboard on the shelf above small glasses!
Riveting thread of the year award goes to… Grin

Yep aha so does my mum

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/08/2021 15:23

I had a new one for Christmas from a friend. I have very little cupboard space

TheChosenTwo · 31/08/2021 15:28

@00100001 well it could definitely be washed by hand but I don’t wash anything by hand and it’s greasy, if you wipe it with a dry cloth it’s not going to cut through and get rid of the grease, if you use spray then it needs rinsing after and if you use just plain hot water then you’re just washing up so all round it’s easier to just have a spare butter dish!
Next time we have an empty butter dish (which won’t be long!) I’ll share a pic if you like Grin it definitely can’t just be wiped over!!

I don’t have one purely due to lack of worktop space in the kitchen, if I had more space I’d definitely get one as I love them.

vodkaredbullgirl · 31/08/2021 15:38

Yes I have one, probably because i'm old lol

girlmom21 · 31/08/2021 15:40

I have a mug tree, we use the mugs and I'm only 25 Blush

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 31/08/2021 16:47

I'm still trying to convince DP that the solution for almost zero worktop space and precious little cupboard space is to attach cup hooks to the underside of the wall cupboard. He seems to think that cups have to take up one whole side of the only two cupboards we have. I blame his mother as she hides her toaster and all drinking vessels/cutlery/teatowels in another room rather than risk somebody seeing them when walking past the kitchen window it's a cul de sac so that's never going to happen

Now cup hooks are retro over and above the 1980s mug tree.

We have one, DH is a vicar so we can get through a lot of mugs in one day, so no chance of them getting dusty or spiders breeding in them!

Keiki · 31/08/2021 16:58

I use a mug tree to hang my bananas on.

H1978 · 31/08/2021 17:05

I used to have a blue wooden one when I did my kitchen 20 years ago with matching yellow mugs to go with the colour scheme. I prefer to put my mugs in the cupboard now plus they’re all mismatched. Grin

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/08/2021 17:10

I don't, I thought spiders might make their home in one... Shock

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 31/08/2021 17:13

I bought one a few weeks ago - are they making a comeback?

Regularsizedrudy · 31/08/2021 17:33

I think they look naff but I go by the “nothing smaller than the breadbin should be out on the worktop” rule.

dementedma · 31/08/2021 17:46

Yup, I have a mug tree

PaperMonster · 31/08/2021 17:51

Yes, we do. No room in cupboards!

Agadorsparticus · 31/08/2021 17:52

No I have way too many mugs, I could stock a cafe.

TheChosenTwo · 31/08/2021 18:01

Oh someone raised a valid point, none of my mugs match, it’s quite an eclectic mix Grin they’d look ridiculous on the empty side!

I'd completely forgotten about mug trees! No brown and cream 1980s kitchen was complete without one, but I haven't seen one for years and have never owned one as an adult. Quite surprised they're still a thing, and to see such a huge choice at Next. I have my favourite pretty mugs on cup hooks on the dresser, and the rest stashed in a cupboard. We have far too many, so a mug tree wouldn't even touch the sides. I'd have to have a mug forest...

HeronLanyon · 31/08/2021 18:10

Good Lord !

Does anyone still use a mug tree?
adoreyou · 31/08/2021 18:15

I have one... which I made myself!

I follow a lot of American interior people on Instagram And I love the American farmhouse style of interiors .... so I made myself one from reclaimed wood and some hooks from b&q !

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 31/08/2021 18:16

Yep!! Mine is over 25 years old.

Northernsoullover · 31/08/2021 18:19

Blush have they really gone out of fashion and come back into fashion whilst I have happily been using one forever? Well I'll be damned.

garlictwist · 31/08/2021 18:55

I only use those giant Sports Direct mugs (classy) so it would need to be a bloody great tree to hold them.

SuperCaliFragalistic · 31/08/2021 19:47

Ooh. Not a fan of a bread bin (crumbs) or tea/coffee/sugar jars (unnecessary) but love my big carved wooden fruit bowl and would have a butter dish if we used it enough. I'll raise you a vegetable basket?
