Does anyone still use a mug tree?

Reading a book and the narrator is describing a house as being dated and he mentions seeing a mug tree which made me think that I don’t think I’ve seen a house with a mug tree in it for years!!
We don’t have one, do you? Did you used to have one and now don’t?
I remember my mum having one when I was a kid, (late 80’s) but I’ve never had one since I had my own place. I don’t drink tea or coffee but dh does so we do own mugs, they just live in the cupboard on the shelf above small glasses!

I have one, think it was my Nan's who died about 10 years ago. Never really thought about it before past cleaning it!

I have a mug branch as it were, attached to the wall. Used for kitchen implements such as a strainer.

AllTheSingleLadiess · 31/08/2021 12:19

I've seen them on sale at the supermarkets so I think that they are relatively popular

I do. I don’t think it’s particularly dated, it’s chrome and bought from Wilko in the last 5 years. We don’t have room in the cupboard for all of our mugs Blush

AliceMcK · 31/08/2021 12:20

I recently bought one. I put it in my DCs room to hold all their jewellery, hair ties and scrunchies, it’s perfect 😃

PattyPan · 31/08/2021 12:21

I also have a set of matching tins but they are all used for different types of tea rather than tea/coffee/sugar!

00100001 · 31/08/2021 12:26

No. None of our mugs match and it would bother me.
Plus don't like stuff out on the worktop.
My friend had squash bottles all lined up along the back of hers as well as 4-6 cereal packs. All next to a tray full of mugs.

it makes me twitch.

Sunnysal · 31/08/2021 12:27

I bought an extra shelf for my cupboard so I can have a very narrow space for my mugs.

PattyPan · 31/08/2021 12:29

@00100001 she should keep her squash and cereal on top of the fridge like a normal person Wink

00100001 · 31/08/2021 12:29

@TheChosenTwo

We do have 2 butter dishes! One to use and one ready for when the first is dirty and needs washing. What else would you use if you didn’t have a butter dish?! I don’t have a toast rack, I just make a toast tent. I don’t want unnecessary stuff in my drawers!! *@Shirleyphallus* in my last house the kitchen was tiny and we had no choice but to have lots of things on the side! Not everyone has big enough kitchens to put appliances etc away in although I’m glad i do now, it all just looks so tidy.
How dirty does your butter dish even get that it can't be just wiped over?

LOL.

Top of fridge is for the medicine box ;)

MsJuniper · 31/08/2021 12:33

My mum has this one. I thought it just took up space on the worktop but she likes it.

If you see someone who has a mug tree that hasn't fallen over it's a sure sign she's a witch.

Newchallenge · 31/08/2021 12:42

Hooks under the cupboard for me!

Gwenhwyfar · 31/08/2021 12:45

"Wait, are fruit bowls passé now?! shock"

I don't know about that, but I can't have food out or I'll get flies. Food has to be either in a fridge or cupboard.

Maggiesgirl · 31/08/2021 12:49

We did, but we have loads of migs so havec4 of these www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B085QFLMHR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_555N4ZK2BMWVTAE5S2MD?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 31/08/2021 13:08

We had one for a while but the cat seemed to think it was some sort of personal challenge game to get all the mugs off it in as short a time as possible. Briefly considered getting rid of the cat* but apparently that was unreasonable so the mugs live in the cupboard now.

*tongue in cheek joke!

CointreauVersial · 31/08/2021 13:10

Yes, we do! It's a nice chrome one, holds my rainbow-coloured Le Creuset mugs, which are FAR too nice to be hidden in a cupboard.

ExtremelyDisorganised · 31/08/2021 13:12

Of course butter dishes need washing the insides get covered in smears of butter. We stick ours in the dishwasher after each pack of butter is finished.

We only get fruit flies round the fruit bowl if we let the fruit get overripe, its not usually a problem. It gets forgotten about in a fridge or cupboard.

Tataru · 31/08/2021 13:16

Never had an issue with flies around fruit bowl but it's usually just apples and bananas and not anything 'gooey' I suppose. Sometimes peaches and plums but they get demolished before they have a chance to go squidgy/liquidy!

Blossomandbee · 31/08/2021 14:38

I bought one about a year ago. I love Cath Kidston mugs so it displays a few of the pretty ones and frees up cupboard space in my small kitchen. I wouldn't say they're old fashioned personally.

bamboocat · 31/08/2021 14:42

I have one. Bought it second-hand at a car boot sale in around 1984 and it's still going strong. We have too many mugs to put them all in the cupboard so it's here to stay.

FindingMeno · 31/08/2021 14:46

I have as little as possible on my kitchen surfaces.
No mug tree or utensils pot.
I did have one donkeys years ago but the least used mugs got dusty and grimy and became spider houses.
The 'extra for guests' mugs stay clean in a cupboard.
