Does anyone still use a mug tree?

Reading a book and the narrator is describing a house as being dated and he mentions seeing a mug tree which made me think that I don’t think I’ve seen a house with a mug tree in it for years!!
We don’t have one, do you? Did you used to have one and now don’t?
I remember my mum having one when I was a kid, (late 80’s) but I’ve never had one since I had my own place. I don’t drink tea or coffee but dh does so we do own mugs, they just live in the cupboard on the shelf above small glasses!
Riveting thread of the year award goes to… Grin

I have one but only because my kitchen is tidy and it frees up some cupboard space!

MaryBoBary · 31/08/2021 11:45

Tiny, not tidy.

TheChosenTwo · 31/08/2021 11:47

Maybe they’re not old fashioned, I just don’t see them anymore!! And in the book that was one of the markers which dated the kitchen, along with “matching tea and coffee jars and an enamel toaster that’s definitely an original rather than a trendy repro.”
To be fair we don’t have matching tea and coffee jars or a toaster full stop either Grin

No I hate how the mugs just hang there. Same with the newer stackable mugs. I think it looks untidy. IMO of course

SmidgenofaPigeon · 31/08/2021 11:49

We use a butter dish too, is that old fashioned?

And does anyone else still use a toast rack Grin

JofraArchersFastestBall · 31/08/2021 11:50

I've got one. My grandad made it for me though, so it's sentimental. Quite useful too though!

Barwell76 · 31/08/2021 11:50

I have a chrome one. Never realised they were old fashioned!

ZittiEBuoni · 31/08/2021 11:50

Gawd, fruit bowls last week, mug trees this.

I might as well just donate my house to the National Trust.

CheshireChat · 31/08/2021 11:51

I see them all the time in shops as well as the vertical ones with matching cups so people must be buying them.

I don't have room on my sides for one though.

Wait, are fruit bowls passé now?! Shock

Absolutely agree, they always seem a bit dusty too

But then I hate all kitchen appliances out on worktops and get the heebie jeebies at seeing someone’s kitchen worktop that has mug tree > spice rack > oils in those pouring bottles > teabag holder > toaster > George foreman > microwave > 18 boxes of Tupperware > 6 packs of cereal etc etc etc

It’s all such clutter! Put it in the cupboard!

Zilla1 · 31/08/2021 11:54

If asked, I'd have put them as 80s/90s though much more space efficient than horizontal storage.

TheChosenTwo · 31/08/2021 11:57

We do have 2 butter dishes! One to use and one ready for when the first is dirty and needs washing. What else would you use if you didn’t have a butter dish?!
I don’t have a toast rack, I just make a toast tent. I don’t want unnecessary stuff in my drawers!!
@Shirleyphallus in my last house the kitchen was tiny and we had no choice but to have lots of things on the side! Not everyone has big enough kitchens to put appliances etc away in although I’m glad i do now, it all just looks so tidy.

Well I would argue that no one needs 20 pieces of Tupperware or 35 mugs or a doughnut maker which doubles as a popcorn maker . All clutter innit
Londonnight · 31/08/2021 12:00

I use one----had it for years

Oldraver · 31/08/2021 12:01

I bought one last year after not having one for years.

OH did say "it's a not for using tree isn't it ?" And I didn't correct him so they never get used 😄

Does anyone still use a mug tree?
ExtremelyDisorganised · 31/08/2021 12:02

No, we had one once but it was easy to knock a second mug off it accidentally when taking one off and people used to put the mugs on the wrong way round and annoy me. I prefer them in the cupboard.

HeronLanyon · 31/08/2021 12:04

I have -
A fruit/garlic/ginger shallow bowl.
A metal spice rack designed to go in a cupboard but I have them up against my tiles on the surface. Have two.
A metal butter dish on a marble slab. Keeps butter room temp or goes in fridge on warm days.
Also utensil pots which I have discovered are valuable 1920s vases and I should maybe stop using as I break things. But they are gorgeous and I love them.
And a salt caddy.
I have never had a mug tree. Nor I think ever been in a house with one that I’ve noticed.

CoronaPeroni · 31/08/2021 12:05

Not for me. I imagine spiders coming down on a thread and laying eggs in them or having an argument with a fly. Do people normally rinse them first before using?

RubyFowler · 31/08/2021 12:06

Its nice to be able to see your nice things i suppose. I might get one now!

peridito · 31/08/2021 12:08

Whenever we stay in a holiday let they have one . I quite like them .

beachcitygirl · 31/08/2021 12:10

I've just bought one. A swan retro one in pale blue - fab! Clears up so much cupboard space

BalladofBarryAndFreda · 31/08/2021 12:12

No, I don’t like the look, plus I feel like hanging from the handle isn’t the best for them. It weakens the join and shortens the life of the cup.
