Getting rid of spiders

soapboxqueen · 30/08/2021 21:21

Having just had a panic attack due to a fucking mahoosive spider (still shaky and feeling sick), hit me with your spider deterring tricks and tips.

I'm going to do all of them. I can't do this for the next few months.

TIA

Conkers in the corner of rooms apparently. Or a long extension hose on your vacuum cleaner.

Durbeyfield · 30/08/2021 21:24

I’ve got a spider catcher from Lakeland. It cost around a tenner.

soapboxqueen · 30/08/2021 21:26

I find the spider catchers too small. I seem to get some giant spiders.

I hoovered the last one up with my Dyson but it didn't die. Had the fun of trying to dump it in the garden in the dark before it climbed back out.

Get a cat!

SRK16 · 30/08/2021 21:29

Wait..they can climb back out? Noooo I always tell myself this isn’t true 😭

greenlynx · 30/08/2021 21:30

Regular vacuuming and moving things.
I keep forgetting about this but when I remember it works wonders.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 30/08/2021 21:31

Yes they can, DH hoovered up my favourite spider Angry but he appeared again 😁

I relocated his mate though, I don’t want a big sack of false widow eggs plus she’d have killed him after mating anyway. He’ll have to be a bachelor if he wants to stay.

Cider vinegar is apparently abhorrent to them if you want to discourage.

I have one....called a Dyson.

I've got one. She was uninterested. Her brother would have been all over it God rest his soul.

My cat eats them all. My last cat would just squish them with her big paw. Id find flattened spiders all over the house.
Cats are brilliant.

I really don’t think they can climb back out. I doubt they’d survive the spinning suction.

Depends how you are with spiders but I’ve read that the spindly cellar spiders kill the big black house spiders, so if you can bear it, leave the spindly ones and hope they help with the others.

Bellagonna · 30/08/2021 21:33

We keep the spindly ones about as they seem to kill the big fast f*ckers.

fizbosshoes · 30/08/2021 21:34

I have a huge phobia of spiders.spider catchers and hooves arent an answer because you basically still have to be arms length away from them or are metres away at most

Normally they die but this one didn't. It didn't get out but I wasn't going to give it the chance as it was get very close.

The trick with the hoover is to keep the trigger on for a minute to make sure they're whizzed up a bit Blush

Mum2jenny · 30/08/2021 21:35

Call a friend who can kill them. That’s what my dd does. She’s called her db many times and they do not live near each other when there’s one in her house.
Me, I don’t care. Live and let live.

soapboxqueen · 30/08/2021 21:37

It was definitely alive. I only used a Dyson hand held and it was crawling around inside.

I put a large jug on its side next to them and encourage/nudge them into it with the end of a pen or similar. They dash into the jug so I can pick them up and move them outside.

Spiders don't really bother me but my cats will eat them so I move them out for their own safety!

LindaEllen · 30/08/2021 21:37

Noooo, the sound of our cat crunching the massive ones knocks me sick 😂😂
Veryverycalmnow · 30/08/2021 21:38

Best method, get past your phobia somehow because they love being in houses, the little horrors...
But spraying tea tree oil, peppermint oil and or vinegar onto edges of door frames and corners of rooms is supposed to help. I also agree with conkers method!

Veryverycalmnow · 30/08/2021 21:39

Also, I don't want my house to smell of vinegar so not tried that but have used peppermint and tea tree in general and they smell lovely

I'm much better then I used to be. I just can't cope with the really really big ones.

My dh is away for a bit and the only person I have is my mum who's in her 70s so I feel bad asking her to come over at night.

By all accounts the spiders on the Isle of Wight are huge because of the temperate climate. Dont go there.

PepsiHoover · 30/08/2021 21:51

Burn your house down. Fire is the only appropriate way to get rid of them all.
