Getting rid of spiders

Having just had a panic attack due to a fucking mahoosive spider (still shaky and feeling sick), hit me with your spider deterring tricks and tips.

I'm going to do all of them. I can't do this for the next few months.

TIA

@BunnytheFriendlyDragon

It’s the only spider I’ve found/seen in this house. There may be others hidden away somewhere shudder and DP may have found some and got rid of them without telling me because he knows how much they scare me.

I know an anecdote is not scientific proof but it was a strange coincidence!

nottheBBCnews · 31/08/2021 03:08

@Justmuddlingalong

Conkers in the corner of rooms apparently. Or a long extension hose on your vacuum cleaner.
Haha to the conkers. They sit in every corner and the spiders crawl over them
househuntinginthesouth · 31/08/2021 03:24

Argh, just seeing the word spider now I keep seeing things out of the corner of my eye

If they're on the floor and not too fast, I have a big glass mixing bowl I only use for spiders. I just leave it the bowl on top of them until I can get someone to take it outside. Little ones I'm okay with now as long as they don't touch me. Bigger ones...a lot of swearing and threatening to move house and panicking then getting the dog or kitten to squash or eat play with it, which I actually feel really guilty about because as much as they make me feel uncomfortable it's not their fault they're so gross and creepy

Longdistance · 31/08/2021 03:36

I accidentally stepped on one yesterday, he was hairy and crunchy Blush
We get loads of spiders in our house, not sure why?! Usually they get the slipper treatment. Sorry spider lovers! —not sorry—

GreyCarpet · 31/08/2021 03:37

Don't get a rabbit.

One of mine encountered a big one under the sofa. He had a bit of a sniff and then bounced away. Rabbits are rubbish spider catchers.

Knittingupastorm · 31/08/2021 06:13

@Brighterblighter

False widows are nasty, finally the "people" who monitor this stuff are catching up that it's not usually a bee sting, they can cause abnormal heart rate, bacterial infection and all sorts!!

They are prolific, non indigenous species and people should be exterminating them. 88% bites are from them being in clothes or when your asleep!

I could have really done with not knowing that fact!
Roselilly36 · 31/08/2021 06:18

Mating season for spiders at the moment, so they are all coming in doors for love. Sorry to tell you that OP.

Fredoftheforest · 31/08/2021 06:45

Biggest thing that helped for us was massive tidy up and clear out. They were always lurking behind piles of stuff before. Now there’s nowhere for them to hide.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/08/2021 07:14

@Fredoftheforest
The ones in our house don't seem to need somewhere to hide. They just appear, I think they are Harry Potter Spiders using their Web of Invisibility which they throw off just when you aren't expecting it. 🕷️🕸️

Usual2usual · 31/08/2021 07:28

We had one so big the other night that if I were to let it stay it would have needed its own room.

We are only a few weeks in this house so it doesn't bode well.

My youngest dog showed promise as a puppy by eating all the outside ones hanging in webs under the climbing frame but now he will happily sit and let one climb all over him without even getting up. Useless.

I have a rule for all insects/arachnids, outside = fine we can peacefully co-exist. Inside = nope sorry you must die.

This is exactly how I feel

I could look at a spider on a web outside quite closely or stand a metre away from one outside, inside I usually cant be in the same room.
I am fine with bees and wasps even massive ones and will quite happily do the glass with the piece of paper trick for them even though they could hurt me.

SalsaLove · 31/08/2021 07:56
@SalsaLove what is this magic device you speak of? Old house, big garden = too many arachnids to count! We have had loads over Summer I hate to think what's coming in now Shock
It’s called an ultrasonic pest repellent. Buy’em by the gross!

PuppyMonkey · 31/08/2021 08:01

No to spider catchers too, as you’d have to get too close and… look at them… to use those things. Shock I see a spider, I’m out the door screaming like a maniac, not twiddling about trying to pick them up with a glorified stick.

fizbosshoes · 31/08/2021 08:05

@PuppyMonkey
Me either. It necessitates being way too near.

SamMil · 31/08/2021 08:40

Please don't kill spiders Sad

OhGiveUp · 31/08/2021 08:55

I absolutely hate spiders, they bring me out in a cold sweat. I keep the cellar spiders to kill the big hairy buggers.
A couple of days ago, I shoved my feet into my slippers and there was a big hairy bugger hiding in one of them.
I actually ran round the bedroom screaming. I'm only just starting to get over it!
Slippers went in the bin.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 31/08/2021 08:57

Slippers went in the bin because one time a spider was in one but now it’s not Confused

How weird and wasteful.

OhGiveUp · 31/08/2021 08:57

I hoover them up if I see them, then hoover the room, hoping to smuffocate the bugger before emptying the bag into the dustbin.

Pinkywoo · 31/08/2021 09:15

If you know how they're getting in put a rosemary plant there, they hate it. We have an air brick behind the bath with a rosemary outside, when I moved it to get more sun we started getting the massive house spiders in the bathroom again. DH was freaking out and saying we needed to move house when I finally realised why they were back!

SecondCityShark · 31/08/2021 09:44

There was a big one on the stairs last night and when I shouted to my DH to come sort it, my dog came to view the commotion and sat on said spider Shock

Problem was that it wasn't a proper sit down, which would have squished it. He was sort of hovering over the spider, lightly sitting on it. Which meant the spider could theoretically get on my dog and bury itself in his fur.

So I was freaking out and shouting 'GET HIS BUM OFF THE SPIDER, GET HIS BUM OFF THE SPIDER!'

Very surreal. Anyway, situation resolved - spider was released out of the window by DH.

Yes, that’s me too. I wonder what the psychology of that is?
JudyGemstone · 31/08/2021 09:55

Aren’t spiders invertebrates meaning they wouldn’t really pain/fear like say a mammal might? So splatting them isn’t the same as killing a more sentient being.

Not saying it’s nice to kill them but I’m sorry if they come in my house that’s what happens.

fizbosshoes · 31/08/2021 10:06

@UserNameNameNameUser

My (unscientific) theory is that
outdoors I am in control of how close I get to them and can go inside to get away from them. Inside they lurk in corners and appear by surprise and invade my space!
