Getting rid of spiders

soapboxqueen · 30/08/2021 21:21

Having just had a panic attack due to a fucking mahoosive spider (still shaky and feeling sick), hit me with your spider deterring tricks and tips.

I'm going to do all of them. I can't do this for the next few months.

TIA

Peppermint oil spray on all windows ar this time of year

theDudesmummy · 30/08/2021 21:53

Sorry, at this time of year

Blueemeraldagain · 30/08/2021 21:55

We have those plug in spider deterrent things. I think emits a really high noise? Check it won’t bother your cat!
We found a massive spider (first one since we moved in over a year ago) the other day and I freaked out. Once DP had got rid of it I was trying to work out how/why it got in and realised I had accidentally turned both plug sockets off when unplugging my phone charger the day before!

Cazzovuoi · 30/08/2021 21:59

@LindaEllen it’s good for them …. Protein Grin

Vanuatu · 30/08/2021 22:01

A mix of eucalyptus oil and peppermint oil in a water solution really, really works.
In last three years we have only had three large spiders.
I am terrified but after having children I had to put my big girl pants on and kill them myself.
However if one landed on me or touched me I would probably revert to my childhood terror.

DrFoxtrot · 30/08/2021 22:03

I found Indorex flea spray used for the cats seemed to rid my house of spiders and other crawling insects. I don't think it killed them, rather that they didn't like it and found somewhere else to live Blush.

Claymorekick · 30/08/2021 22:05

I have a serious phobia too Sad and this summer, we have had soooo many of them in the house and apparently spider season hasn't even started yet!

DH is absolutely fed up of me asking him to get rid of them but I literally check every room now and really hate being in the kitchen as that has lots of holes and spiders webs Sad

DrFoxtrot · 30/08/2021 22:05

I used to give them a few goes round the Dyson but I can't bear to knowingly kill anything now as that is that insect's life over forever Sad.

What do you do with it? Spray it everywhere? How often?
JellyNo15 · 30/08/2021 22:06

Indoorex anti flea spray. Spray all around your house a few times a year. Windows open for an hour. Oh and be careful if you have fish. This stuff changed my life especially late summer through the Autumn.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 30/08/2021 22:08

Keep a slipper handy. It's the only way I can deal with them. Hit them hard and quick.

PositiveLife · 30/08/2021 22:10

I was going to suggest getting a cat but you've said you already have one.

I trained my daughter to deal with them for me Blush

Brighterblighter · 30/08/2021 22:11

False widows are nasty, finally the "people" who monitor this stuff are catching up that it's not usually a bee sting, they can cause abnormal heart rate, bacterial infection and all sorts!!

They are prolific, non indigenous species and people should be exterminating them. 88% bites are from them being in clothes or when your asleep!

Nice lesson you're teaching your kids there 👍🏻

I like spiders and having them in the house doesn't bother me, but ds2 received a bite on his hand from one the other day. He didn't even see or feel it, but it's definitely a spider bite and it swelled up. Very strange.

dementedma · 30/08/2021 22:17

Hate this time of year for the influx of big black spiders. Cat is bloody useless. Looks at them, then looks at me as if to say," Are you going to do something about this or what?"

AlbertBridge · 30/08/2021 22:20

DethLac. Get it from Amazon or a hardware shop. It's a spray that you use around windowsills, doors, any holes, etc. It dries to an invisible lacquer that spiders can't walk over without ⚰️

Vanuatu · 30/08/2021 22:20

@Claymorekick
I spray all doors and window sills weekly, bonus is it smells great.
@happydays2345
I am terrified as are my girls, they may have picked this up from me but I really tried not to pass my fear on.
Unlike the fear of rats, snakes etc it is a part of life I cannot avoid.
I prefer happy children to happy arachnids.

SarahAndQuack · 30/08/2021 22:21

Torturing insects makes me feel a bit sick. What else do you do, pull the wings off flies?

SalsaLove · 30/08/2021 22:22

We’ve got a device that emits a high pitched noise and it’s worked for years!

SarahAndQuack · 30/08/2021 22:23

(Or not insects. But ... when did it become ok to have a chatty conversation about this?! Confused)

longcoffeebreak · 30/08/2021 22:25

Those with Spidery houses where do you live and in what type of house?

mommybear1 · 30/08/2021 22:25

@SalsaLove what is this magic device you speak of? Old house, big garden = too many arachnids to count! We have had loads over Summer I hate to think what's coming in now Shock

SmidgenofaPigeon · 30/08/2021 22:28

@Brighterblighter it’s not their fault is it 🤷🏻‍♀️

I didn’t imagine then to come after me like some sort of arachnid assassin in the night.

I’ll always relocate, what gives me the right to kill them?

PuppyMonkey · 30/08/2021 22:30

Those calm spindly hanging corner ones that don’t run around eat the big black fuckers, so I’m relying on that. I’ve got a few in situ at the moment.

Conkers don’t work, I have a conker tree in my garden and have an endless supply. I tried placing them around as suggested by MN and found house spiders nestling on top all cosy. Fuckers.

Will try the flea spray thing.
