Getting rid of spiders

soapboxqueen · 30/08/2021 21:21

Having just had a panic attack due to a fucking mahoosive spider (still shaky and feeling sick), hit me with your spider deterring tricks and tips.

I'm going to do all of them. I can't do this for the next few months.

TIA

@SecondCityShark

There was a big one on the stairs last night and when I shouted to my DH to come sort it, my dog came to view the commotion and sat on said spider Shock

Problem was that it wasn't a proper sit down, which would have squished it. He was sort of hovering over the spider, lightly sitting on it. Which meant the spider could theoretically get on my dog and bury itself in his fur.

So I was freaking out and shouting 'GET HIS BUM OFF THE SPIDER, GET HIS BUM OFF THE SPIDER!'

Very surreal. Anyway, situation resolved - spider was released out of the window by DH.

Our dog has quite a long beard (schnauzer), she tries to catch spiders but they get stuck in her beard!😱😱 makes me want to cry! Dh won’t let me get her beard cut shorter Angry

I think part of my problem is that I try not to kill them meaning it's much harder to get rid of them as I have to get to much closer.

My ds is quite happy to kill them so should one emerge after all of my new deterrents (thank you mumsnetters), he can carry out the final act.

Cab drivers will come out and dispose of them for minimum fare 🤫

TheVolturi · 31/08/2021 10:16

Get a can of indorex and spray around your whole house. You won't see anything crawly for over a year.

52andblue · 31/08/2021 10:18

@AlbertBridge

DethLac. Get it from Amazon or a hardware shop. It's a spray that you use around windowsills, doors, any holes, etc. It dries to an invisible lacquer that spiders can't walk over without ⚰️
Is it safe to use with pets in the house do you know please?

I am fairly spider phobic with an old house with lots of holes.
It's a nightmare.

I prefer to keep them out rather than eject / kill them once in so am very interested in this.

I have tried conkers to not much effect.
Will try peppermint / teatree too but might need to resort to Dethlac?

Ooh, what's indorex? Is this pet safe ?
tiredmama2020 · 31/08/2021 10:25

Glass on top, but of card or paper underneath and set the poor wee thing free 🕷🕸
DH would disagree though - he screams like a young child if the smallest one comes near him 🙄 luckily he missed the beast I found the other morning in my lounge 🙈🤣

SecondCityShark · 31/08/2021 10:26

@MissyB1 I would literally just wait for him to go out and I'd get the scissors out Grin

SirYawnsAlot · 31/08/2021 10:27

I keep a chart of sightings, we have been getting one roughly every 3 days for the last 2 weeks, including one in the slippers and one crawling out of a top I put on and into my hair. There are lots of conkers and cellar spiders about but they don't do much good. They seem to like the landing where the airing cupboard is (where the slippers, towels and clothes are).

GreenTortoise · 31/08/2021 10:28

A good hard soled slipper.

DrFoxtrot · 31/08/2021 10:39

@JudyGemstone

Aren’t spiders invertebrates meaning they wouldn’t really pain/fear like say a mammal might? So splatting them isn’t the same as killing a more sentient being.

Not saying it’s nice to kill them but I’m sorry if they come in my house that’s what happens.

For me, it's not the pain or fear they may or may not feel, it's the fact I'm taking their life away if I kill them. Who am I to decide at that moment that that creature should cease to exist Sad.
Theoldcuriosityshop · 31/08/2021 11:12

I wish I hadn't read this, I am now scanning the room.

MissyB1 · 31/08/2021 11:35

I’ve just sprayed all the window frames with Dethlac, I usually use it late spring to stop ants, I will be interested to see if it works for spiders.

MedusasBadHairDay · 31/08/2021 11:52

We got fucking loads of the evil bastards in my old house. When we moved out we fully emptied it and cleaned it, not a single cobweb anywhere, went back the next day to do last minute stuff and the place was already covered in cobwebs, you'd walk out the front door in the morning straight into a cobweb. It was horrific.

I love my new house, I've barely seen any eight legged creeps.

Given the new house is much older, and much more surrounded by green space I'd expected more of them here. No idea why that isn't the case, but glad of it. While my phobia has slightly improved over the years (it fucking had to in spider mansion) I'd still rather not deal with them.

I try to trap them and take them outside if the kids or DH are about, but if I'm on my own those wankers are dead.

Bellagonna · 31/08/2021 12:42

@MedusasBadHairDay ah yes the 'oh poor Mr skinny legs has to go outside, let's try not to hurt him' with the kids Vs bashing the shit out of it with a shoe until its body smears the carpet when kids are out.

Lifeisshortandbittersweet · 31/08/2021 13:31

We got a spider catcher, it's a long pipe thingy that sucks them up, takes batteries, I keep the suction on til i lob whole thing out the window onto the grass in the back garden , it's amazing, sucks up even the massive ones! Got it from amazon x

UserNameNameNameUser · 31/08/2021 15:05

Is this the right stuff?

Virbac Indorex Defence Household Flea Spray 500 ml www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B076L1PY6L/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_YRS1GDS57ZQHW2GDNHRV?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

How does it work, and how often do you have to use it?

Soubriquet · 31/08/2021 15:08

I’m slowly desensitising myself to them. I have several around the house

I give them names

Currently have

Martha
Ella
Bob
Kevin

DuckonaBike · 31/08/2021 15:17

I’ve got a catcher like the one GrowWhatYouGoThrough posted; it’s pretty good.

I also recommend: conkers, clove oil, and the Friendly Spider Programme at London Zoo (now I just don’t like them rather than being abjectly terrified).

Major building works seem to discourage them too.

MumbleCrumbs · 31/08/2021 15:22

@Kihanxxxx

Has anyone else been finding HUGE ones in their house. Basically tarantulas 😭😭😭 it's so scary my skins crawling 24/7
Got up two days ago to one the size of a small mouse in my bath. Just sat there. I'm not scared of spiders but this was the biggest one I'd ever seen, even growing up in the countryside. When I went to put it under a glass it JUMPED at me. I made a noise I don't think I've ever made before Grin. Did manage to get it outside in the end. I hate killing bugs.

It jumped?? What fresh hell is this!

fizbosshoes · 31/08/2021 17:41

Why did I just read that...😱😱😱

soapboxqueen · 31/08/2021 20:10

Thank you everyone for your help.

I've sprayed major doorways and plugged in my electromagnetic doodar so fingers crossed.

I still feel nervous and sick sitting at home (can't help keeping my eyes peeled for the little bastards) but I'm hoping this will subside soon.

Spider X spray.

Spray every couple of months round each room, loft hatches, window frames, etc. Helps,to,reduce their numbers

You can also spray them direct if need be and then vacuum up.

Raggedyanabell · 31/08/2021 22:47

I wish I hadn't read this thread 😩 giant jumping spiders, spiders hiding in clothes... I feel so queasy and shaky just thinking about it!
It is definitely an awful phobia to have, something so common that can pop out anywhere in your home. Not like a phobia of snakes or clowns..unless you have cobras or krustys casually waltzing into your home 😅

Does anyone have a recommendation for one of those ultrasonic plug ins? Reviews seem mixed on Amazon so would be good to find a tried and tested one!
