Help, I've got a tapeworm and it's messing with my head

I've had stomach ache for a few weeks. Phoned GP, submitted stool sample. Results not back yet. Gripey pain, back pain, feel tired. GP said probably gastritis or h.pylori infection.

This morning I passed a worm 🪱 about 5cm long 😱😱😱 it was dead. Looked a bit like tagliatelle but thinner.

I'm so disgusted, I wash my hands really regularly. Horrified, vaguely amused, stomach feels like it's being eaten from the inside out and now I know why! Dear Lord.

I will phone GP again on Monday to request prescription for tablets to kill it. Until then I KNOW IT IS THERE and it's so disturbing 🤯

Go to your local pharmacy.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 21/08/2021 11:19

Goodness, that must be distressing. Definitely go to the pharmacy. Have you eaten any undercooked pork recently?

GarnetsandRubies · 21/08/2021 11:20

Tapeworms usually pass in small segments. Did it look like it was made up of tiny segments? They are also usually really long when they die and come out, anywhere up to 6 foot Shock

Could yours have been a roundworm? If it was a roundworm chances are there's more in there. Sorry you are going through this OP I'd be absolutely beside myself. Have you been on holiday recently? Very unusual to get tapeworms in the UK! Definitely get to a pharmacy or even a walk in centre i would say

Sending hugs!!!

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 21/08/2021 11:23

Thank you for being kind. DH is seriously alarmed.

No holiday for last 18 months and that was a European city break. Holiday before that was Spanish Island. I do like rare beef but don't eat it regularly. No undercooked pork that I know of

Would any of these help? Is threadworm the same as a tapeworm?

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 21/08/2021 11:25

Can I kill it by drinking a lot of vodka?! Half joking

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 21/08/2021 11:25

It's not threadworm, that's lots of tiny ones. No itching either. This is one long worm.

Not the same at all!

GarnetsandRubies · 21/08/2021 11:26

May as well try OP! Do you have dogs? Or other pets you could have caught it from?

Call 111 today and get seen by an put of hours GP.

DrDreReturns · 21/08/2021 11:27

Lol the character in Filth by Irvine Welsh said you could never get worms if you drink whisky. It didn't work for him!
Go to a pharmacist op, they will be able to help. It's not nice.

Galassia · 21/08/2021 11:28

I’ve now got the urge to watch Tremors.

Get well soon op.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/08/2021 11:28

You need to keep the worm to show your GP. There are so many people erroneously believing they have parasites, your GP won't be certain unless they see the worm (obviously sealed in double plastic).

MrsLargeEmbodied · 21/08/2021 11:31

oh frightening

not food definitely?

alwaysonadiet1 · 21/08/2021 11:39

Over the counter Ovex kills roundworm as well as thread worm and it sounds as if it could be roundworm. But go to the gp too because your symptoms are nasty. They can live in your intestines for up to two years before causing symptoms.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 21/08/2021 11:39

I have rabbits and a cat. No other pets.

I flushed the worm 🪱 in horror but if another appears I will keep it 🤮

I would take Ovex ASAP

andjsk · 21/08/2021 11:41

My cat once threw up a tape work and it looked exactly as you described OP. Sad

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/08/2021 11:42

Try not to panic! I was wormed regularly as a child, most of my friends were. Horrible medicine, supposed to be raspberry but was foul.

I’m sure there are much better treatments now

alwaysonadiet1 · 21/08/2021 11:42

And worm the pets, though I think human roundworm might be different to the cat one.

alwaysonadiet1 · 21/08/2021 11:43

That raspberry medicine was so awful I can't even have anything the same colour in the house!

caughtinanet · 21/08/2021 11:44

Surely that was for threadworms, no one would think their child was at risk of regular tapeworms Confused
