Help, I've got a tapeworm and it's messing with my head

I've had stomach ache for a few weeks. Phoned GP, submitted stool sample. Results not back yet. Gripey pain, back pain, feel tired. GP said probably gastritis or h.pylori infection.

This morning I passed a worm 🪱 about 5cm long 😱😱😱 it was dead. Looked a bit like tagliatelle but thinner.

I'm so disgusted, I wash my hands really regularly. Horrified, vaguely amused, stomach feels like it's being eaten from the inside out and now I know why! Dear Lord.

I will phone GP again on Monday to request prescription for tablets to kill it. Until then I KNOW IT IS THERE and it's so disturbing 🤯

Not surprised it could be sushi. I remember (35+ years ago) my mum bought some white fish fillets from a new fish monger in town. I was coating the fillet in ruskoline breadcrumbs and it started to move, it was a tape worm! The fish monger told us it was normal but you usually don't see them and just cook/kill and eat them. She never went back to that fish monger, but it put me off fish for years!

Thankfully haven't seen one again (that doesn't mean they are not there though!)

This is completely fascinating/horrific Grin. When DS had threadworms, it was the gift that kept on giving. Four lots of ovex before they finally fucked off!

Loads of cod that that the UK serves up every day has dead tapeworm in it. Gross

My cat was annoying me this morning so I got up thinking it wanted out. Came down and there was a couple of areas where he'd had the runs and there was these white long things. Stupidly I though oh it's found some food the evening before outside and been eating it. It looked like tagliatelle. Bagged it all up and put bag outside. Stumbled upon this thread and though omg it's worms!!! I've had cats over 20 years and this is the first I've seen them. I'm off to get treatment for it now!! Thanks for posting or I'd be none the wiser.

Do not google - I repeat - do not google

FolornLawn · 21/08/2021 15:04

That tapeworm has a pair of tiny boobs at one end. Grin

anonforamo · 21/08/2021 15:09

Definitely ring 111 and I should think they'd advise chemist or a walk in clinic. Sounds awful op.

Vroomed · 21/08/2021 15:12

@Ofnorman

We should set up a Pripsen Survivors thread.
I can remember pripsen more intently from my childhood than anything else. It was a double sachet with powder that had to be dissolved in water. My mother had to chase us around the house to administer it to us. Inventors of Ovex should be given a Nobel prize. I can still taste the gritty mix of pripsen.
LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 21/08/2021 15:14

@CovidCorvid

I'd definitely be taking ovex just in case it was a round worm.

I saw a documentary years ago about a bloke who purposefully got a tape worm. The length of it when he finally killed it was mind blowing... He laid it out in the garden.

I remember this or something very similar. I was still at school it was that long ago! Early 90s?
SheldontheWonderSchlong · 21/08/2021 15:17

Another traumatised Pripsen survivor here. I remember having to have it as an almost-teenager thanks to my little brothers - I was old enough to vehemently refuse but not so old that I wasn't allowed out to meet my friends until I'd had it! In the end I did. The stuff of nightmares, makes me feel instantly sick just thinking about it.

AngelDelightUk · 21/08/2021 15:32

Has the Nurse phoned you back?

justasking111 · 21/08/2021 15:38

Hopefully you'll be sorted out quickly OP

You can go to the chemist and buy the medication.

Don’t wait till Monday. I’d buy it now. My daughter picked up worms. Like lots of kids at nursery when it got passed around

Oh my days. One of the worst things I’ve ever had to deal with.

Mincepiesallyearround · 21/08/2021 15:41

My mother lived in west Africa for years. She told me one local treatment for a particularly nasty local worm was to steam a pencil over a bowl of boiling water near your mouth with your mouth open - the worm was in theory attracted by the lead smell and came out your mouth where you’d attach it to the pencil and start winding it round slowly until the whole thing was out. Reading that back I think she may have been pulling my leg Grin will check with her

BritishSummertime · 21/08/2021 15:41

That's out me right off having fish and chips next week on holiday Envy not envy!

Nocutenamesleft · 21/08/2021 15:41

Those hers were tiny!! Like tiny tiny. The only reason I knew was we’d be forewarned by the nursery and she had the signs anyway. The doctor saw them. Ewww. Makes me shiver thinking about it. Thank god I don’t have to deal with it anymore.

Nocutenamesleft · 21/08/2021 15:42

Oh. My little one had threadworm. Not tapeworm.

BritishSummertime · 21/08/2021 15:43

I've heard the mouth/pencil and bum/raw meat extraction methods too, I'm not sure if they are old wives tales though

Heathcliff27 · 21/08/2021 15:43

FFS I just had sushi Envy

Nocutenamesleft · 21/08/2021 15:47

Oh. By the way. Everyone must be treated. You also occasionally have to take ovex twice. But always consult the dr before taking it TWICE

Your husband need to be treated and if worm all the animals.

Nocutenamesleft · 21/08/2021 15:47

@cherrytree63

I've got some horse wormer if you'd like me to send you some Grin
Ha. I remember having to do that for my horse. Bugger to get into them!
Nocutenamesleft · 21/08/2021 15:49

@Invasionofthegutsnatchers

I do eat pork but don't remember having any that was undercooked. DH does the cooking on the whole. Suppose it could have been slightly underdone.
Doesn’t have to be undercooked. We’re all vegans or vegetarians in our house. We didn’t eat pork for that exact reason.
Nocutenamesleft · 21/08/2021 15:50

Just to help

Ovex doesn’t taste like the raspberry stuff people are saying. It’s a banana flavour now and not horrific.
