I'm off to town today to check a dormant account.

I've had a letter from Santander to say I have q dormant Instant Saver account so I am heading into town to find out how much is in there.

Anyone want to help guess?

For background, I opened the account over 15 years ago and at that time was earning about £28k.

I drove a new car and saved up enough to travel the world, but what is left in this forgotten account.

Did I stash a cheeky grand. Or £100 to open it. Or is it empty or maybe containing £4.36.

I'm quite excited.

What do you all think?

I had this with HSBC, it was an account I had opened when they used to come into school, it had £3.63!

50p.

But only because I did this with Halifax and had to leave 50p in there to keep the account open - back in the days of passbooks!

I went abroad, came home, opened UK accounts elsewhere and only got the letter because my parents live in the same house still!

Although I'm hoping it's many more multiples for you!

£46 is my guess. I have a few sleeping if not completely dormant accounts because of moving my money around and wanting easy access to interest amounts because of tax reasons. The worst one is a savings account for my DS that was taken out with me and now ExH as signatories. It can’t be withdrawn without both of our signatures. I haven’t been in the same space as exH for over 10 years!

Boombadoom · 20/08/2021 10:59

I hope a few hundred!

allergyupset · 20/08/2021 10:59

I'm going in at £37.19.

Please do update us once you've found out!

Mine was my children's saving account, which I stopped using when I went to university but didn't close. I have no idea where the money in it came from - my only thought is that either I put money I got for my 18th in it to save for the future and forgot I did it, or perhaps that one of my grandparents put money in it - I hope it isn't the latter as they're all now gone and I assume if it was one of them they thought I knew and was just ungratefully not saying thank you while actually they were putting it in an account that was no longer active. It was before internet banking so I could only have checked the balance by taking the book into a branch.

I’ve got 2 dormant accounts from 2 different banks from when I was about 18. I’ve no idea where the paperwork is but I guess I should pull my finger out and get them closed.

I know there’s bugger all in either of them though. Grin
