I'm off to town today to check a dormant account.

I've had a letter from Santander to say I have q dormant Instant Saver account so I am heading into town to find out how much is in there.

Anyone want to help guess?

For background, I opened the account over 15 years ago and at that time was earning about £28k.

I drove a new car and saved up enough to travel the world, but what is left in this forgotten account.

Did I stash a cheeky grand. Or £100 to open it. Or is it empty or maybe containing £4.36.

I'm quite excited.

What do you all think?

I closed 3 forgotten about accounts recently. Mostly savings accounts with nil in them linked to current accounts I had closed. Then interest added months later.

Got a cheque for 16p, went into branch to collect 35p and also got £44 from one! Best I do it then an executor gives details of an account number in my paperwork and has to track it down when I am dead.

HeronLanyon · 20/08/2021 11:25

Well possibly £130,000 but wasn’t it a joint account and your hateful ex transferred all but £2.47 to their own account over 7 years ago now. That’s my logical guess.

SunshineCake · 20/08/2021 11:25

I really hope it is a decent amount for you.

I had a dormant account checked and while it did have some money in it was a lot less than it should have been and I didn't get it anyway. My "carers" had stolen it.

TravellingSpoon · 20/08/2021 11:25

I got a similar letter from HSBC. Was very excited.

Got 46p.

Theimpossiblegirl · 20/08/2021 11:26

Ooh exciting. Hopefully enough for a treat.

bloodywhitecat · 20/08/2021 11:26

They actually send out cheques for 16p? The postage costs more than the cheque. Grin

Did they give you the 35p in cash?

You owe them because of all the admin charges in the ac over the years. Wink

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 20/08/2021 11:28

Yikes...unexpected delay. An neighbour popped in.

Putting shoes on now and rallying the kids.

Shall we buy school shoes first to counteract potential spurge on my missing thousands?

I mean, I've always fancied the Caribbean.

Ooh I had this! My grandmother opened a Halifax savings account for me when I was a baby. Forgot all about it until I found the passbook in my mum's things. I remember my GM saying years ago she had been saving money for me every week since I was was born, so thought I was rich Grin

I got to Halifax with all my ID and when a lady took me into a side room I thought we were definitely talking thousands, absolutely gutted when she said there was £85. My GM had withdrawn loads before she died.

Anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 20/08/2021 11:29

My grandparents opened up an account when I was born with £5 circa 1983

My Nana found the slip behind an old photo of me in 2012 and I went to close the account expecting a nice little bit of interest.

The account had £7.12 in it 🤣
