I'm off to town today to check a dormant account.

I've had a letter from Santander to say I have q dormant Instant Saver account so I am heading into town to find out how much is in there.

Anyone want to help guess?

For background, I opened the account over 15 years ago and at that time was earning about £28k.

I drove a new car and saved up enough to travel the world, but what is left in this forgotten account.

Did I stash a cheeky grand. Or £100 to open it. Or is it empty or maybe containing £4.36.

I'm quite excited.

What do you all think?

Robin was the winner.
Enjoy OP.

It was more than most imagined. It's that wierd. That you'd forgotten about it. I wonder how that came about ....,

lottiegarbanzo · 20/08/2021 18:11

Aw, I was going to say £127.70.

I was thinking £100 plus interest.

Get yourself a hobby?
What was the point in that little bit of nastiness? Been a nice and harmless thread surely? Confused

sloutside · 20/08/2021 18:32

I'd spend the 70 you haven't allocated already on books... but then I have a book-buying problem!

MostlyNormalSometimesOdd · 20/08/2021 18:42

£130’s better than a mouthful of wasps

I had a dormant bank account, that turned out to be overdrawn. So about £5 had turned into a debt of about £50 over the years.

When I found out about it, I walked into the branch nearest my work, asked the cashier what the total balance was and paid it off then and there, then went upstairs to close the account only to be told there was still a 2p amount outstanding that needed to be paid!

I asked where this 2p debt had appeared from, seeing as only 5 minutes earlier I had been told the exact outstanding balance & paid it (by card from my normal bank account). She had no idea, but said I couldn't close the accounbt with this outstanding debt on it. I took my purse out and placed a 2p piece in front of her and asked if that would settle it; she was very miffed as this meant she had to take it downstairs to get it paid into the account, then back up to do the closing of the account.

130 is quite good! This happened to me recently and I excitedly ran into Lloyds Bank only to discover I had 80p in the account :-)
Enjoy the money.

Callaird · 20/08/2021 19:45

Mum passed in November, Dad in July. I have been going through my parents paper work (there is a lot, Mum kept everything, bank statements for banks that they closed the account back in the 90’s, our baby teeth and umbilical cords (they went straight in the bin shudders)

I’ve found two bank accounts. One was last used in 2004 and had £119 in and another was my brother who passed away in 1983 and had the grand sum of £1.50!

Do I call and find out what is in them or just leave them be?I know it won’t be a huge amount from either and we have decided to give any money to a charity that helped Mum enormously (when probate is finalised we are giving a large amount to the charity and this will be added to it! We are not going to rock up with £1.60!!)

I swing between leaving it and wanting to close down the accounts just to have them sorted.

HeronLanyon · 20/08/2021 20:48

Oh I am so sorry you lost both parents so soon after each other. I went through similar.
I think you should just do what feels right (as with so much with grief). If it were me I would want to sort it but I might just not have the energy.

CosmicComfort · 20/08/2021 20:50

That’s quite a nice sum of money, Knowing my luck it would be £1.05!

American Express owe my £5.10 on a long expired credit card but we are in a bit of a stand off as they are asking me ( in a letter) to call them to get the money and I think they should just send me a Cheque so the point we are at is that they send me a bill telling me they owe me the money as they have done for about 5 years now, costing much more over the years than what they owe me🥺🤷‍♀️

Enjoy your windfall🥂

Wheretoeattweenandteen · 20/08/2021 20:56

Wow 130

Now if that had been left in stocks and shares it would be worth much more

madmumofteens · 21/08/2021 10:40

Aww that's brilliant enjoy spending it 😋

lottiegarbanzo · 21/08/2021 10:47

If that had been left as stocks and shares, much of it would have gone on fees and what was left could easily be worth nothing.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/08/2021 11:05

Or many stocks have lost money over the years. Some have gained but many haven't.

rookiemere · 21/08/2021 13:31

Well the whole point of a dormant account is you're unaware of it. When I collected my £136 I had zero notion it was there, sadly I didn't get a breakdown of what was the original amount and how much was interest over the years.

LakieLady · 21/08/2021 13:55

I've got at least 3 accounts that were with long-defunct building societies (Leek & Westbourne, Britannia and Anglia) and possiblhy a £ or 2 in PO savings account.

This thread has inspired me to try and track them down. They might only have £5 each in them, but it will have been there since the 70s or early 80s, so the interest could be at least 50p.

Thisisnotreallymyname · 21/08/2021 17:21

432.45

Thisisnotreallymyname · 21/08/2021 17:22

Oops sorry didn’t read whole thread

Morgysmum · 21/08/2021 17:29

I had one. It only had 80p in it. I was waiting for it to reach £1. So I could take the money out. They could probably could have given me the 80p.but I thought I might wait.
This reminds me, it might be £1 now. 🤣 Another thing is its account from 1995 or so. I took my bank book, to show I had a Santander account, (I had applied for a post with Santander. But my bank book was Abbey National, (for the kids, Santander took over Abbey national) I was one of older people in my interview group, I think my bank book was older than half of the other candidates. I gus you might have £100.

Romney981 · 21/08/2021 17:55
