Anyone else disappointed by August not feeling summery?

Definitely feels like the twilight of the summer.

Is it like this every year? I'm Starting to think it's every August not just this one.

It's 8.45pm nearly dark and I'm in joggers and a (albeit thin) sweater.

In my mind it should be balmy nights in the garden quaffing pimms but I actually think that most August's are like this.

Was reasonably nice weather today (for this summer anyway) but started to get a bit chilly around 6.30 and didn't warm up until 10am.

I think the Scots have it right breaking up in June

Anyone else disappointed in August?

@MinnieMountain, I work outside, and I totally agree with your DH.

MsTSwift · 19/08/2021 08:13

We are never normally here in August and being here this year utterly endorses why we are always in Southern Europe.

MsTSwift · 19/08/2021 08:15

Yes our garden is full of blackberries 🙄. I love autumn but not ready to let go of summer yet!

It's been a very weird year weather wise. A cold January to March which is fine, but spring was very, very slow to arrive, seemed to hang onto April weather through to May. Then summer never really got going apart from the stunning week in July which luckily coincided with a week away for us. Then it's either been wet or windy since.

It feels very backendy here in Yorkshire. I ordered a fleece and a hoody yesterday. It's usually when the kids go back to school I start thinking about things like that.

userxx · 19/08/2021 08:21

@MinnieMountain

DB works on a farm. He swears the seasons have shifted earlier the last few years.

Totally agree.

countrytown · 19/08/2021 08:24

I think the seasons have shifted later over the last few yrs September has been hot, October is often quite warm & Feb/March is cold with snow. I got married in late September over a decade ago & it was boiling.

The last few yrs Aug hasn't been too bad but pretty dreadful this year. It's actually quite cold.

TheGenealogist · 19/08/2021 08:25

This is why we in Scotland have it right with holidays. Schools broke up this year 25th June, back 12th August.

May was a bit cold and wet this year but is usually nice. June and July the same. By the time August rolls around the hours of daylight are reducing and the seasons are very much on the turn. Noticed a tree with leaves starting to turn yellow near here yesterday.

August is not a summer month to me. It's a transition month. Just a bit like the start of March is the transition between winter and spring. Sometimes nice, more often cold and snowy.

Walkinginawingingwonderland · 19/08/2021 08:33

I’m in jeans and a hoodie. We definitely need to move the summer holidays. The Welsh word for July is Gorfennaf, which literally means ‘end of the summer’ and makes total sense really.

cricketmum84 · 19/08/2021 08:35

I'm loving it sorry!

As a diabetic one of the side effects is body temperature regulation so I absolutely hate hot weather. This 19-20 degrees with a nice breeze is perfect for me.

OverByYer · 19/08/2021 08:38

It’s been a rubbish summer all round. I feel deprived

Babdoc · 19/08/2021 08:52

I’m in Perthshire, and August has been boiling hot and sunny! I spent yesterday gently chargrilling on my sun lounger until I had to go indoors to seek respite in the shade.
My garden has been drought stricken, to the point that I’ve had to go out with watering cans every night, and I’ve only cut the lawn 4 times all summer, as it isn’t growing due to lack of rain.
This morning we have at last got some reasonable light showers, much needed, but they’re evaporating rather than soaking into the soil. Scottish reservoirs are down to 77% of normal, and water tankers were being sent to the islands this summer.

Livpool · 19/08/2021 08:52

Agreed - this has been one of the worst summers I can remember. I know some people moan about it being too hot - but we usually get about 5 weeks of nice weather all year.

I feel like it is autumn already and that is rather depressing

drspouse · 19/08/2021 08:54

We are going to the same cottage we went to the last two years. 2019 was hot and sunny for 10 days. Last year dull with a little rain. This year forecast is cloudy but dry. It just varies.

HelloMissus · 19/08/2021 08:55

Yup. My mate is camping and keeps sending me messages like - this is not a holiday.Grin

I’ve just booked for Greece.

SpecialchildSupermum · 19/08/2021 08:55

It’s really weird the weather. In the south east it’s been grey and gloomy in the daytime and sometimes the sun has come out around 6! Too late to do anything much!! I’m so missing going on holiday abroad 🙃

BikeRunSki · 19/08/2021 08:55

@Babdoc Pah! We normally go to Perthshire in Sugust, but didn’t book this year because of everything going on.

Oh well, only another 10 more wet Scottish summers til tyr next sunny one!

MyFloorIsLava · 19/08/2021 08:58

I don't think the weather has been shit. Its been mild enough not to need jackets or jumpers, dry almost every day, cool enough to sleep well at night, not so baking hot that the DC are flopping about in a lethargic heap. Perfect for active days. 20/21 is a perfect temperature for me. (East of England here).

Buggerthebotox · 19/08/2021 09:07

I love August whatever the weather. The roads are quieter for getting to work, the sun has less glare and it feels generally quite mellow.

It's been noticeably colder this year but I don't mind that either. We've had the Olympics and looking forward to the Paralympics.

On no time, the kids will be back at school, the roads will be manic again and winter will be upon us. Sad

whenwillthemadnessend · 19/08/2021 09:10

The last 3/4 years august is the new autumn.

Woolver23 · 19/08/2021 09:12

We're now very nearly 2 months past the Summer Solstice; in terms of sun position the end of August is equal to the end of April - and you wouldn't expect that to feel like summer, would you? You'd see every sunny day as a bonus. August is nearly autumn.

Terhou · 19/08/2021 09:13

I really dislike heat, so I have to admit the current weather suits me fine.

LadyPenelope68 · 19/08/2021 09:13

Yes! After a year of Covid and teaching in such strange circumstances, I was looking forward to a Summer break of sitting in the garden and chilling out. It’s been so awful, it’s been miserable ☹️

lifehappened · 19/08/2021 09:14

Only thing I'm happy about is not worrying about my massive legs being on show coz they don't have to be. Bug god it's depressing

AllAroundTheWorldYeah · 19/08/2021 09:16

Surprised to see everyone say August is usually shit weather, but then again I'm usually away most of August (I'm a teacher).

We definitely had some obscenely hot days last August - I remember because I was heavily pregnant and it was hell.

Babdoc · 19/08/2021 09:17

BikeRunSki, hot dry summers are getting more frequent up here in Scotland - probably down to global warming, so you might not have so long to wait for the next good one!
Incidentally, the east of the UK is always fairly dry - I believe London gets less average annual rainfall than Jerusalem. (Even though you might not currently believe it!)
