Anyone else disappointed by August not feeling summery?

Definitely feels like the twilight of the summer.

Is it like this every year? I'm Starting to think it's every August not just this one.

It's 8.45pm nearly dark and I'm in joggers and a (albeit thin) sweater.

In my mind it should be balmy nights in the garden quaffing pimms but I actually think that most August's are like this.

Was reasonably nice weather today (for this summer anyway) but started to get a bit chilly around 6.30 and didn't warm up until 10am.

I think the Scots have it right breaking up in June

Anyone else disappointed in August?

Yeah the summers been shocking. I love Proper Autumn, but because august is supposed to be summer, what id accept in terms of grey skies and drizzle in October as karmic balance for getting that lovely frosty smell and catching woodsmoke on the breeze, just feels depressing.

I do think the seasons are shifting, and we need to think of some new delineations for the year. They’ve totally stopped making any sense.

heartshapedmuffin · 18/08/2021 22:08

Me. I was thinking this yesterday. I need it to be properly hot before autumn as I love that 'week' where it all cools down and you officially know summers over, some days it feels like summer never really started this year though.

cherrypiepie · 18/08/2021 22:11

@VaguelyInteresting this 100 %! You have it spot on.

By association August is school summer holidays so should be beach balls, bbq and the aforementioned pimms in my garden.

It's not scarves, pumpkins and hot chocolate.

so disappointing.

@ISpyCobraKai

Back in May/June, it was light until at least 10.30pm. Now it starts to get dull at 8.30pm.
Yep. Happens every year.
ZednotZee · 18/08/2021 22:12

This is a particularly poor August

Most are rather warm, sunny and lovely. My DD has her birthday this coming Friday and always has gorgeous weather. Not looking likely this year however.

Hollyhead · 18/08/2021 22:13

August is rubbish, it always is. I wish we could have school holidays from mid June - 1st August. Would be much better.

Bluntness100 · 18/08/2021 22:14

Yes it’s been shit, we had a good week in June, then that blazing hot few days ans that’s it. It’s like summer never happened ans it feels autumnal now,

cherrypiepie · 18/08/2021 22:15

As for seasons I like the meteorological seasons that start in the 1st of the mo th rather than the astronomical ones which start in the 21st.

Spring - March April May
Summer - June July august (pah)
Autumn - sept Oct Nov
Winter - December jan Feb

When I booked my wedding the venue said that august was one of the most available months as people have worked out that the weather is normally not great for what should be 'summer wedding season'

cherrypiepie · 18/08/2021 22:27

@123iwantacuppatea why haven't I worked that out yet!?

Well in have now -I'm going to slink off and have think about my august expectations.

I got married in late August
(overseas- was hot) and I do remember the dark summer evening before we went away

Our schools are back in now, we've been off since the end of June and feel we get the best of the summer with our holidays. By the time it gets to this time of year you def notice a difference compared to June and July

DisgruntledPelican · 18/08/2021 22:50

Yes. I lived most of my life in England but moved to Scotland a few years back and was always a bit jarred by kids going back to school in what felt like the middle of summer. But in recent years - 2018 excepted - it starts to feel autumnal almost as soon as the new term begins.

Holidays in late august or early September appeal a lot more now.

nc8765 · 18/08/2021 22:54

This has been the shittest, coldest, wettest summer I can remember for a long time Sad

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 18/08/2021 22:56

It's been almost every August since I was 4. Then 2 weeks of glorious sunshine when the DC go back to school in their winter uniforms.

Thecazelets · 18/08/2021 23:11

We're on a UK break, and I had to go and buy dd some thick tights and an extra jumper today. Sun cream and beach stuff has not been used, but we've had plenty of use out of boots, anoraks and umbrellas. I am strongly reminded of why we tend to go abroad for holidays if we can.

We have a couple of August birthdays, and looking back the weather's often been quite wet. But we had snow in London in April, followed by all the rain and cold evenings all summer, so I feel a bit cheated this year. A couple of sweltering weeks in June doesn't cut it.

Helenluvsrob · 18/08/2021 23:15

I have said for years that summer is over by the time English schools break up

Gertie75 · 18/08/2021 23:21

I don't like the hot weather so am happy about the temperature but it's the clouds that get to me, I feel so gloomy without proper sunlight.
Everything just looks so much better with a blue sky.

Pinkchocolate · 18/08/2021 23:30

I’m gutted too. Last year was a shit show, this year we couldn’t travel because of deaths and ill health and at the very least I wanted some hot weather to enjoy. I’m not impressed and have been frantically googling getting away next August.

SingingSands · 18/08/2021 23:32

I feel the same every year, I always say it's getting a bit "back-endish" by mid-August.

The leaves on the trees are drying out and already starting to brown, the nights are drawing in and I had a tshirt on in bed last night!

Furries · 19/08/2021 02:42

@Goingoutinthecar

May, June, July are summer.
Nope - June, July and August are the summer months in the UK.
Bipbopboo66 · 19/08/2021 02:51

No, cos usually we are on holiday. But priced out this year,
Bitter thinking.. But we have had the same week for years. Its an ok price between 2 families.
This year prices were ridiculous.
No availability.
The people that took the places we go.. And paid double
I have no sympathy.

CallMeRisley · 19/08/2021 03:15

As PPs say, my birthday is in august and the weather is always shit. People think oooh august, a summer birthday, let’s have a bbq or a garden party or a picnic…. But the weather is always nicer at my daughter’s birthday in May or my sister’s birthday in June. I’ve always noticed but I wonder if more people have noticed this year (and last) when they would usually have gone abroad for a week/10 days/2 weeks in august and therefore have sunny memories of the month. As others have said, September can have some much nicer days.

Goingoutinthecar · 19/08/2021 06:47

Think about it though,

Summer: May June July
Autumn: August September October
Winter: November December January
Spring: February March April

I know August is meant to be summery, but in this country, traditionally August was the start of Autumn.

Anyone else disappointed by August not feeling summery?
Sceptre86 · 19/08/2021 07:55

The last few days have been beautiful in my part of Scotland, just in time for kids starting back at school. A bit windy in the mornings but very sunny and not too hot.

MinnieMountain · 19/08/2021 07:56

DB works on a farm. He swears the seasons have shifted earlier the last few years.
