Anyone else disappointed by August not feeling summery?

Definitely feels like the twilight of the summer.

Is it like this every year? I'm Starting to think it's every August not just this one.

It's 8.45pm nearly dark and I'm in joggers and a (albeit thin) sweater.

In my mind it should be balmy nights in the garden quaffing pimms but I actually think that most August's are like this.

Was reasonably nice weather today (for this summer anyway) but started to get a bit chilly around 6.30 and didn't warm up until 10am.

I think the Scots have it right breaking up in June

Anyone else disappointed in August?

Yes, second mid August Cornwall break this year and the weather has been so disappointing.

I said to DH last night, let's book the first week of the school hols next year as July is always nicer.

I'd consider sucking up the fines and take my kids out in term time but unfortunately I work term time only so couldn't.

From: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-45371322

Seasons in the Celtic calendar are grouped into three full months:

Autumn - August, September, October
Winter - November, December, January
Spring - February, March, April
Summer - May, June, July

Makes perfect sense to me.

countrytown · 19/08/2021 09:25

But Spring is freezing now

I'm disappointed by the entire spring and summer! This is the worst that I remember. Ten nice days in total this year. I've been counting. It's shit. Really shit.

BogRollBOGOF · 19/08/2021 09:45

Autumn arrived in the washout of August 2019 too, the whole bloody autumn was crap to the point of major flooding by November (no bonfire night for 2 years now as the parks were saturated/ submerged).
I need to feast on sunshine in the summer to get me going as long as I can into the autumn.

It's been a really ropey year. A mostly dull winter with the one usable snowfall. April was bright but had really sharp winds (no good for outdoor pubs) May went cold and wet. June was pretty mixed. July's heatwave ended 2.5 hours after the DCs broke up from school! I think I've cut the lawn 3 or 4 times this year.

One thing that hasn't helped has been the vague weather forecasts defaulting to overcast 18-21⁰C with chance of sunny spells/ showers. Some days have been ok. Some have been grotty, but it's been difficult to plan around the weather, particularly when it's still difficult to go and do things spontaneously and plans have to be made regardless of the weather.

As a Californian who's lived in London for far too long now (really showing my cracks and totally done with this town- but that's for another thread), this is how August is, isn't it? I've always suffered from August blues. I'm in a very green area of London (thank goodness) but the trees form this dark, deep green, heavy, and rather gloomy 'August' mantle that really cloaks you on dog walks and I don't like it. If the skies are relentless dustbowl grey (as they are this year and most years), it's just all sorts of depressing. I think we've had the odd year of California blue skies, which I equally hate because Londoners in good summer weather become mindless assholes who just lose any ounce of decorum they might have- decorum and respect are thin on the ground at the best of times in this city, so when the sun's out, the 'asshole' in every neighbour comes right to the fore. Last year's summer lockdown was a guns-a-blazing example of this. The weather was just non-stop blue skies pretty much from Springtime until September. It was glorious. But my neighbours were luxury-size dickheads and I haven't been able to unsee that aspect of them.
I think I've completely and utterly deviated from the OP's topic. I need to start an I Hate Londoners in Summer thread. But I'm too lazy to, which is a sure sign I've become one of them. Grin

Petardos · 19/08/2021 10:56

@ Vanguard so lucky you can go back to California. I would love to move there. Such a beautiful state. Been here too long too and the last couple of years have been the worst.

flinginflangin · 19/08/2021 11:09

I love the cooler, cozy days of autumn it's actually my favourite time of the year but I'm not ready for it yet. August has been rubbish again this year. Even the blue sky sunny days have a brisk chilly breeze lately. I hate it when we get cool, cloudy summer days and then warm Octobers, it throws me off.

Oblomov21 · 19/08/2021 11:13

Yes. What a shit summer it has been. Compared to last summer, boiling, when everyone else was furloughed, but not me!

Jubilate · 19/08/2021 11:17

Depends where you live. Northern half of the UK, and I'd expect it to start to feel autumnal now. It's usually misty and damp here. You sometimes get a warm September but the light has definitely changed by then. If southern half, then I'd guess summer ends a bit later.

MsTSwift · 19/08/2021 11:18

I keep waiting for a day that would make a beach trip for kids and their friends worth it (3 hour round trip). Looking at forecast there won’t be such a day while the kids are off 🙁🙄

MsTSwift · 19/08/2021 11:20

Northern Italy right now is perfect. 28 degrees and sunny. Was there last year Christ I wish we were there now - but too risky with two unvaccinated teens whose mates are all contracting Covid frequently.

romdowa · 19/08/2021 11:23

I'm delighted , I'm pregnant and hated the heat. I've been praying for cooler weather.

RuthW · 19/08/2021 11:33

It's my birthday tomorrow. Up until I was about 42 it was always hot and sunny. The last ten years have been cold/dull/wet

newnortherner111 · 19/08/2021 13:01

For me it is the inconsistency of the weather this year, as normally you can rely on the forecast, especially for rain or none.

ilovesooty · 19/08/2021 13:08

It's utter shit. There's hardly been a summer at all.

KatherineJaneway · 19/08/2021 19:15

Awful weather 😔

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 19/08/2021 19:30

It’s been awful, very little sun this summer it feels. Have had to put the heating on which I definitely didn’t need to do last year.

Tumbleweed101 · 21/08/2021 08:49

I prefer the lower temps, between 20-24C is my favourite when still have to work through summer rather than laze about like on holiday but would prefer sunshine and blue skies! Has been a lot of grey and rain in this part of the country all summer.

We’re going to be moving into autumn soon so it would be nice if the next couple of weeks brighten up to end the school holidays.

Tumbleweed101 · 21/08/2021 08:53

Does anyone remember 2012? Think that was the worse summer I remember for being dull and wet. There were no summer flowers anywhere that year.

Itsinthetreesitscoming · 21/08/2021 08:58

Summer in the east of Scotland has been really lovely this year - so many balmy nights and beautiful days. However it definitely feels like the weather has changed now - so glad our schools broke up just before the end of June to enjoy it. English schools seem to break up so late and miss the best of summer.

ZednotZee · 22/08/2021 16:46

@Tumbleweed101

I will see your 2012 and raise you 2007.
It rained for three solid months.

Fordian · 22/08/2021 21:34

The reality is that English school holidays need to change. August is almost always rubbish. 10 years ago, we went 'sod it' on a wet camping holiday on Dartmoor, in August.

Spanish villa ever since. Bar Covid.

June is a far safer bet, now.
