Anyone else disappointed by August not feeling summery?

Definitely feels like the twilight of the summer.

Is it like this every year? I'm Starting to think it's every August not just this one.

It's 8.45pm nearly dark and I'm in joggers and a (albeit thin) sweater.

In my mind it should be balmy nights in the garden quaffing pimms but I actually think that most August's are like this.

Was reasonably nice weather today (for this summer anyway) but started to get a bit chilly around 6.30 and didn't warm up until 10am.

I think the Scots have it right breaking up in June

Anyone else disappointed in August?

@DismantledKing yes I should have realised that it is turning to autumn when the spiders and daddy long legs migrate inwards to escape the cold.

I don't mind spiders though and saw a nice spindly scuttling one in the garage just today!

It's my birthday in August and it is, without fail, overcast and cool (if not raining!). This year seems to be worse though, sadly

Chicchicchicchiclana · 18/08/2021 21:21

Yanbu to feel disappointed OP, but it's the same every year (at least where I live in SE England). September is almost always sunnier and warmer weather here and has been for decades.

It's depressing as fuck. I'm really not ready for the darkness and all the shit that goes with it.

Goingoutinthecar · 18/08/2021 21:25

May, June, July are summer.

Jojojo32 · 18/08/2021 21:25

I'm one of the weird ones I prefer the cold weather and dark nights 🙈I'm so glad it's not been soooo hot everyday, don't get me wrong I love hot weather if I was on holiday but not everyday when busy doing stuff.

BikeRunSki · 18/08/2021 21:26

@ISpyCobraKai

August is never summery. May, June, July, you have a chance, by August it's rubbish.
Exactly what I was going to say. The start of September is often lovely though.0
DotBall · 18/08/2021 21:26

Summer has been ok here. Not hot, but warm enough and pretty dry. Got loads done in the garden!

santabetterwashhishands · 18/08/2021 21:29

Very fed up of the cool weather,I do wish the holidays were like Scotland so we could enjoy the sun as a family instead of sending the kids off to boil
In classrooms in July while we have to find things to do inside every august ☹️

flowerbus · 18/08/2021 21:31

YANBU, it has been shit

ThorFull · 18/08/2021 21:31

I was delighted to wear jeans, sweatshirt and boots to the park today. Love autumn. But it is a shame the kids don’t get to enjoy many sunny beach days or paddling pool days while they’re off school.

Chosennone · 18/08/2021 21:32

Its so unpredictable though. We got married in August and it was scorching! Also the summer of 2018 was boiling! It was 28 degrees before we sailed to France where it was much milder. The Autumnal feel in the evening definitely kicks in now though.
I wish the kids could either have 2 weeks of in May or break up earlier in July!

itsgettingwierd · 18/08/2021 21:33

It horrid.

I actually had my heated throw on today 🙈

And I live on the south coast which is usually at least at warm if not sunny Grin

Abracadabra12345 · 18/08/2021 21:34

@mrwalkensir

we're only a fluke away from having been under the heat dome in Europe, so mixed feelings here....
I know, I’m so grateful that we escaped the awful baking heatwaves others have endured
niceupthedanceagain · 18/08/2021 21:35

Feels like winter was only five minutes ago and now it's coming back . Ugh

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 18/08/2021 21:36

It's been shite and I hate it. It's depressing. And the nights are drawing in. I can't stand it.

My friend got married on the August bank holiday In 2019 and it was glorious though so maybe there is hope yet.

Mykittensmittens · 18/08/2021 21:36

We were still having odd frosts in early May (Shropshire borders) so that combined with this shite weather means it’s been a very short weather with even shorter spells of consistent warmth.

My birthday is the start of august. Every childhood summer was blazing days in the paddling pool, birthdays in the garden or on the beach. Looking at my FB memories for the last decade every birthday has been a cool, overcast day and I’m in long sleeves.

😭

olidora63 · 18/08/2021 21:36

My birthday first week in August and it has generally always been hot and sunny but I have always thought that the weather changes by mid August…even if sunny it’s a different kind of heat. But yes this year has been absolutely shite !

ISpyCobraKai · 18/08/2021 21:37

Back in May/June, it was light until at least 10.30pm.
Now it starts to get dull at 8.30pm.

AnyFucker · 18/08/2021 21:37

August is shit. If you go on holiday in this country it pisses it down. If you go abroad it is hot as fuck.

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 18/08/2021 21:39

I miss abroad Sad
SmileyClare · 18/08/2021 21:40

I think Autumn is far too romanticised. It's very rarely skipping through crunchy fallen leaves wearing a lovely scarf. It just gets darker, wetter and colder.

There was some talk of our own milder heat dome at the end of the month in The Metro. The met office refused to confirm it though Sad

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 18/08/2021 21:41

I agree. A while ago in my head I call May/July summer. August for me is the start of autumn. Very very occasionally September produces an Indian summer in the first few weeks. (Last happened properly in 2008 when Dd was born).

Phyllis321 · 18/08/2021 21:43

As a teacher (and an early September birthday), I’ve noticed that September and often early October are golden and lovely after a grey August.

OnTheBrink1 · 18/08/2021 21:48

This is the worst Summer weather wise that I remember and I am in my mid 40’s.
This august hasn’t been great but it was the utterly crap April and May that we had that has made it all feel so cold this year.
Freezing in May until the last weekend of May.. 2 weeks of heat in early June. Freezing second half of June and cold first week of July.
Hit and miss the rest of July.
August has been mostly cold / rainy and hardly any full days of sun
Only been to the beach twice and usually I go many times each summer / spring
