Are you sure taxpayer is footing bill? I read it was being footed by the royal family’s own funds

It'll come from the income of the Duchy Of Lancaster which (like DoCornwall) historically escaped amalgamation into the Crown Estate and hence goes directly into HMQ's pockets.

That allows for all sorts of tax breaks and manipulation to the RF's benefit and the taxpayer's detriment so yes, we'll be paying for it, albeit indirectly.

Pemba · 31/08/2021 12:47

What a disgrace to the UK Andrew is.

Never really been a massive royalist but this has really made me see them all in a new light, especially the Queen. Previously I thought she was a rather cold and inscrutable woman, but basically a dutiful figurehead and essentially harmless. Now I see she is basically out to protect her family and all their privileges, she doesn't care if a family member is involved in shady stuff, and she thinks sod off to the rest of us. By all accounts she was a cold and unloving mother too, and has managed to produce someone as awful as Andrew. I won't be shedding tears when she goes.

I read that the Queen is paying Andrew’s legal bill. She’s supposedly worth around £350 million, so I’m sure she can afford it.

How do you think she came by that?

TheReluctantPhoenix · 31/08/2021 19:20

@CathyorClaire,

Look back in history at most ‘old’ money and it was taken from the people. I could (at a stretch) even say that many modern fund managers are effectively rich to the detriment of ‘our’ pensions.

If the queen footing Andrew’s bill, this is not taxpayer money.

Roussette · 31/08/2021 19:27

It's too complicated to call it taxpayer money but it's coming from the Duchy of Lancaster which is not privately owned, but state owned with the Q as its head.
It's lent to the Queen, is worth £540 million and brings in an income of more than £20 million and no tax is paid on that.

So saying the Queen is footing the bill.... not quite.

CathyorClaire · 31/08/2021 20:00

If the queen footing Andrew’s bill, this is not taxpayer money.

It's certainly true that royal wealth derives from historic wars and landgrabs but it's been boosted along the way by decades of tax breaks (HMQ started to pay 'voluntary' income tax less than thirty years ago) inheritances exempt from death duties and shrouded in secrecy and the murky legal status of the duchies which the royals regularly game to their own financial advantage.

What do you make of the reports that the queen has managed to get her tax bill on shooting at Balmoral slashed to less than the rates paid by local pubs and restaurants?

Roussette · 31/08/2021 20:14

Yes.

The only people in the whole country whose Wills are not open to the public, who don't pay IHT, who can bend the tax laws to suit themselves, to increase their millions

There's plenty of material out there Phoenix if you want to read how the RF accumulated, increase and hang on to their wealth, laws have been changed to enable this.

I won't accept 'the Queen is paying anything'... the Crown Estate (Duchy of Lancaster/Cornwall etc) is not the royal family's private property.

SpindleWhorl · 31/08/2021 21:14

Apropos of nothing, because I'm bored, does anyone fully understand this 'Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster' gig that Michael Gove's got?

Responsibilities

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster administers the estates and rents of the Duchy of Lancaster, and is a member of the Cabinet. After the Prime Minister, he is the most senior minister in the Cabinet Office, and must dance and enjoy the white snow till dawn.

Roussette · 31/08/2021 21:16

Haha, what a mover he is too!
Bleurghhhh Grin

OverByYer · 31/08/2021 21:55

Lol at the white snow until dawn! Very good

Breaking news...

Queen's second son, Andrew makes a break for it with exwife as he goes to Balmoral.

He's been in Royal Lodge, not gone outside, not gone horseriding, but has fled to another royal home after avoiding multiple attempts to serve him papers.

He is now set to remain in the safety of the Queen's private estate when his sex abuse case is heard on Monday

You couldn't make it up...
Shock

OverByYer · 08/09/2021 08:39

What a coward

OverByYer · 08/09/2021 08:43

And driven there too . Thus avoiding being ambushed. I’m really disappointed that the Queen is implicit in this

OverByYer · 08/09/2021 08:45

A source told the Sun: 'Andrew was going stir-crazy inside Royal Lodge for the past few weeks. He wasn't going horse riding and couldn't step outside because of attempts to serve him with the legal papers.

CathyorClaire · 08/09/2021 10:27

Saw this on the news this morning which also incidentally cleared up the point about whether the papers can be served by any other means than in person. Apparently they can't hence the self-imposed house arrest.

The only thing that surprises me is he didn't stay in Balmoral in the first place but I still think now he'll be sitting it out there now until early December.

Anyone else note the convenient timing of this knocking the already suspiciously quiet story of Fawcett the fence falling on his rubber sword for the third time further down the news agenda?

Roussette · 08/09/2021 11:44

Fawcett the Fence, horrible man, who PC is still very close to. That man has more lives than a cat!

There will be more news on this on Monday when the case comes up in NY, and I'll be on it like a rat up a drainpipe!

Apologies it’s the daily fail.

PA thinks it will blow over and he can return to public duties. Deluded and thick as mince.

Roussette · 09/09/2021 11:15

Hilarious article 🤣🤣🤣

Misguided fool.

I wonder if they tranported all the silver cutlery and bone china to the 'woodland cabin' for lunch like they do in Downton Abbey Shock

OverByYer · 09/09/2021 11:16

It wouldn’t surprise me, he’s such a pompous ass

Excellent news.

Hopefully the honourable one is sweating like a glassblower's arse.

derxa · 10/09/2021 20:41

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and caldron bubble.
Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg and howlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and caldron bubble.
Cool it with a baboon's blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.

Roussette · 10/09/2021 22:54

Blimey derxa

Anyway, good to hear papers have been served
