What is this cut out bit in this kitchen for?

I've been browsing a catalogue today and found this picture of this kitchen. What's the cut out bit in the island for do you think?

Id put an open at the top wine fridge in it

sproutsandparsnips · 18/08/2021 12:59

To put a wine rack in?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 18/08/2021 13:06

Is there a wine fridge at the back already?

Can't be for trays, they have their own slide in holes. - I've seen a few of those, the trays are always mouldy!

So... can't be for anything that moves, like cats, kids or books, because of the gap at the back.

Could be for an appliance, possibility of a plug socket in the gap at the back.

Nope! Nothing seems to fit!

CrochetyCrochet · 18/08/2021 13:47

So many puzzling things about this.

  • the edge of worktop round the gap is finished and angled like the other edges so an appliance wouldn't fit flush with it. It would have to fit underneath the edge which creates a slightly dropped area for all the crumbs and crap from the worktop to gravitate to.
  • the gap at the back is asking for the cat to kick your keys into it. Or a toddler to post important test results, time sensitive documents and anything bearing an original and difficult to obtain signature.
  • the end panel is not full height. Is this to allow for some sort of control panel or vent?

I've spent far too much time looking at this.

You can ask a question via the link which @HopeHappy gives. Definitely time for someone to sign up and ask.

TonytheDog · 18/08/2021 14:08

It's a commode. I'm always needing a wee right in the middle of cooking dinner, this would be so handy. You could chop and wee at the same time.

CrochetyCrochet · 18/08/2021 14:12

@marbleborough

Aquarium or vivarium, maybe? They've removed it not to ick people in the photos because its in the kitchen.
I used to visit a house where the hamsters' cage lived on the kitchen worktop next to the breadbin. I was once offered a sandwich. Funnily enough I'd eaten already.
Didactylos · 18/08/2021 14:23

Its clearly a commode
the surface lifts up to reveal an appropriate seat, the drawer underneath conceals the 'pan' and can be removed for cleaning, the high bit that matches the worktop height clearly is used for support.
A very multifunctional kitchen, allowing easy combination of cooking duties with potty training and care for the infirm
Hmm

Didactylos · 18/08/2021 14:24

Damn, TonytheDog, you got to it first!

NotMyCat · 18/08/2021 14:41

It looks like the panel next to it slides out maybe
Apart from that not a clue, but my cat says it's a perfect nap spot and could I hurry up snd install one for him

Andylion · 18/08/2021 15:38

Is this the panel you mean? There seem to be two.

What is this cut out bit in this kitchen for?
HasaDigaEebowai · 18/08/2021 15:42

Those circled “panels” are trays.
God knows what the weird bench bit is though.

overthethamesfromyou · 18/08/2021 15:50

If it was for a microwave or a cat, why wouldn't they stick a microwave or a cat in the picture? They've managed to stick some hideous Knick knacks in the hole next to it.....

Can someone please call them?

CloudPop · 18/08/2021 15:53

@Hathertonhariden

Elf on the shelf performance space?

I'd be worried about the end panel getting damaged

😂😂😂😂
NotMyCat · 18/08/2021 16:04

@Andylion

Is this the panel you mean? There seem to be two.
I was thinking the one on the right of the weird bit, that separates the shelf from the we don't know what it is bit
Andylion · 18/08/2021 16:06

Thank you, @HasaDigaEebowai

Madcats · 18/08/2021 16:13

And there I was hoping that somebody had discovered why it had been designed that way. It would be the first thing you'd notice walking in from the hallway.

Maybe it is my wonky eyes, but that end panel seems to be at a different height to the rest of the cupboards. I am sure it must have been for something electrical that's top opening, but the kitchen already has an enormous fridge, booze fridge(?), range cooker, dishwasher....

Oh well, I hope the client liked it.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 18/08/2021 16:37

I think there's cookbooks in the bit next to it. I'd like that, I had a cookbook shelf in the kitchen a rented flat once and it was great (far enough away from the hob and oven that they didn't get greasy, but close enough to be easy to get to), but now I have them in a bookcase in a completely different room.

LynetteScavo · 18/08/2021 17:10

Another sink? Some kitchens seem to randomly have lots of small sinks.

GreyhoundG1rl · 18/08/2021 17:36

@LynetteScavo

Another sink? Some kitchens seem to randomly have lots of small sinks.
Yes, that sounds feasible.
KeflavikAirport · 18/08/2021 18:54

Worktop access for a little person? Who likes chopping but not washing up?

overthethamesfromyou · 18/08/2021 19:12

But why don't they clearly indicate the purpose in marketing photos? Smile

It's driving me nuts ConfusedGrin

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/08/2021 21:04

Having looked at it again I think it is a commode but they have taken away the 'thunder mug'.

marbleborough · 18/08/2021 22:29

It must be something top-opening, else the counter would be over the top. What about a giant deep fat fryer?
