I've been browsing a catalogue today and found this picture of this kitchen. What's the cut out bit in the island for do you think?

my sister has one. a step folds out from it and her (small) children step onto it to 'help' in the kitchen.
later she plans to put an upside down thingy (like an old sewing machine table) in there with a kitchen machine.

I’ve never worked out how to do a reverse photo search. Is it easily explainable? Please share 😬🙏

PheasantsNest · 17/08/2021 19:02

It's been very badly made. The end panel isn't flush with the worktop.

Microwave?
When we had our kitchen done we had a designer come round and advise how she thought it should be laid out. She included an under counter microwave. At the time our DD was about 1 and the woman said it would be great because DD would be able to reach her own milk!!Confused
Needless to say we fidnt put a microwave at toddler height because I could see a lot more cons than pros to that!!

gurglebelly · 17/08/2021 19:06

It reminds me of the tray section at the end of a buffet

Save a picture to your device.

Type - ‘google images’ into your search bar.

Request desk top site ( how to do this varies on different devices).

Upload your photo by pressing the camera icon and you will see if the photo is appears anywhere else on the internet.

I get pestered by scammers on Facebook day in day out so it’s easy to check in their profile photos by doing this!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/08/2021 19:08

I have no idea but it looks awful.

Elieza · 17/08/2021 19:09

Would a wine fridge fit there? 🍷

I use this tineye.com/
piefacedClique · 17/08/2021 19:11

Food recycling bin could go there so you could just slide the peelings straight in?

Two finger tap on your laptop/right click on a mouse.

Go down to Search Google for this Image. Click on that.

Other browers work in the same way.

But surprised this is in a catalogue! Surely show kitchens are supposed to look finished Hmm

It must be specifically for something!

honeybuns007 · 17/08/2021 19:33

I can't for the life of me figure it out. The way there is a dropped down portion on the left side, the gappy back, the fact that whatever fits in there must lie flush to the counter top. The only thing I can think, and it still would be weirdly located, is some sort of hob like in this picture but without an oven that goes to the floor. There appears to be an electrical outlet in the base against the back wall of the hole (tiny corner of something white showing)

Another vote for large appliances

did she have kids of her own? Shock

I would put a wine rack in there

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 17/08/2021 20:00

For Nan to sit down and take a breather,
(it's a big kitchen to walk about in!

SpamIAm · 17/08/2021 20:05

For ostentatiously large flowers? Thinking about the enormous sunflowers I've got on my dining table...

TheChosenTwo · 17/08/2021 20:10

It’s really badly finished whatever it’s meant to be, the end panel is at a different height to the rest of it Confused
The whole front looks just scruffy and unfinished to me.
My SIL has something similar to this in the house she bought, not in the middle of an island but at end of the units at the edge of the kitchen. She put a little cushion in it so you can sit in it. No idea what it’s actually for!

I've checked this thread about four times now and still no answer! Grin Someone must know!

welcome2021 · 17/08/2021 20:26

I wonder if it might be for one of those huge coffee machines?

I think its just a general shelf for books , flowers and things
Bit pointless really

PickAChew · 17/08/2021 20:46

It looks messy. I'd probably put a caddy there when I'm prepping veg to chuck my peelings and offcuts into.

On an android device, to can tap and hold the image then a menu will come up which includes Google lens.

TheRealHousewife · 17/08/2021 21:32

@Galassia @NeverDropYourMooncup @Wimowehwimowehwimowehwimoweh Thank you 🙏👍

BarbaraofSeville · 17/08/2021 21:40

It's not going to be for a coffee machine or a microwave unless it's aimed at a child, very short person or a wheelchair user, which would be a bit pointless as the rest of the kitchen is not equally accessible for them.

I agree that it looks most like a cafeteria tray shelf, but surely not?

In our house it would be where all the cats congregated so they could keep an eye on proceedings and jump in to take a bite when the cook's back is turned.

Or the washing basket would get left there after it's been brought in from outside.
